The forum pages that show the threads are loading just fine, but when I click on a thread to view it, it takes a long time to load before finally showing me an error message.

It's cleared up now.

Something is running once a month that clobbers the database server and sends all 4 processors to 100%. It requires a server restart to fix it.

If you're running MS SQL server, someone has probably set up a database maintenance job, possibly exporting it's entire contents to a file for backup purposes. I'd check the scheduler and see what you see. Looking at the event logs around the time this happened might also give you an idea of what was going on.

That's basically what I plan to do.

Cool. I just realized you weren't exactly asking for advice and I gave it anyway. I hope that didn't come off as too pompus; I'm just naturally inclined to try to solve problems. :)

It didn't come off as pompous, at least not to me.

Some of these kinds of things are easy for me to look into, others are more difficult depending on where I am at the time. I work from home and we also have an office in town (6 miles away). At home we have satellite and it sucks. It is incredibly slow, even with a 1 meter dish and just doesn't cut it for some tasks. At the office we have cable which makes it easier to get work done on the SQL server box. (I'm stuck at home for a few more days still recovering from pneumonia and dealing with our dog that was shot by a neighbor.) So a sometimes I have to be content with a simple reboot and worry about it later.
