Hello. My name is "Joe Bang".I'm 33 years old and I drove my van out here to chatsworth from cleveland ohio to be an adult film star.I contacted LA Direct,Type9,world modeling and ATMLA but they won't take me.I don't know if they don't like my looks or if they just aren't taking guys right now.I'm not exactly Brad Pitt but I look good enough to do porn.I called a few production companys but they only take guys through agencies.
It's kind of sad. This is my dream to do this and I worked my ass off to get out here.I'm a pretty talented guy.I'm a good actor too....not just a cock for hire. Now that I'm here,I'm no further along in this biz then I was back in cleveland.I never even got a chance to fuck up lol.
The thing is I don't know what options I have left at this point. Is this it? Am I finished? Is there anyone on this board that can give me some advice? Can anyone try me out in a few gangbangs or something?BTW I could get a hard on for a bowl of cottage cheese if I had to lol....I just want to start working.
If anyone is out there reading this that can help me or wants to give me my big break, please PM me for my cell or something. This is so fucked up.....
Thanks.

It is very, very hard to become full-time male talent, you have a better chance of making the NFL, as there less than 30 guys who make their living from doing porn scenes
I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it is the truth.

I've heard and read around here over the years, a guy can break into the industry (or at least given half a shot) by entering with a reasonably hot female. Or do some gay work? Of course, you have to be able to fuck and stay hard in front of a roomful in disinterested folks.
I do hope someone gives you that chance regardless.
Enough has been written right here on ADT that it would be an interesting read if I could only find it. Maybe from Brandon or one of the Mike's or Christian.

Gay for pay is one option, but starting your own production company is another. Film your own scenes instead of working for somebody else.

Thanks for the replies.
BTW I'm a 'young' 33.I work out and I'm in great shape too. Most people think I look 25ish.
Well, this is pathetic.....Like I said,if anyone out there is reading this and might be able to help me,PM me for my cell number or pics.I'm in studio city right now just sitting at a coffee shop.I'm board.I'd be happy just hanging out on a set helping out for free at this point so hit me up...
Why does living out my dream have to be such a fucking nightmare? lol

Read what our own Steve Holmes wrote in the topic I linked:
"I went to an industry exhibition and talked to the people in person. That got me a few jobs. Than everything went easy. Producers always are looking for new good guys. They are just scared to try out new male talent because over 90% fail and this cost time and money."

"On the AVN site you can find an Industry Directory. My experience with this approach was not good when I started. I've send letters and pictures everywhere and got no response. Calling people up also didn't do it for me." - Steve Holmes
When I was getting rejected or no response from agencies,I felt like the ugliest S.O.B on the planet!I thought they take new guys all the time...just not me. I'm a pretty sensitive guy actually and that kind of rejection hurt.I feel a bit better now : D

Actually I guess my trip here hasn't been a complete disaster...I won't say how but I did manage to 'sneak' my way into a full feature porn film as an extra.I did a scene where I walked into a room and felt up some SUPER hot brunette pornstar for about 5 minutes!Cool thing was is that I was completely erect during the scene and the camera almost seemed to encourage me.If the director would have told me get it on,I would have delivered the sausage lol!
So at least I know that if I ever do get my big break, odds are I won't fail.Everyone on the set was nice and I had a pretty good time too.

Just curious. Why so few? I mean, I know the qualifications are pretty rigorous and all. It can't be easy to cum on cue and all that. But you'd think there'd be more than 30 interested and qualified guys in the US.
Does the industry actively look for new male talent?

Funny thing is,about 80% of what I've done so far to get in could have been done from my home on my laptop and phone in cleveland.Actually coming out here to chatsworth has actually made things more difficult if anything!I thought there would be jobs everywhere but theres nothing.Even craigslist etc. is dead out here.

Oh one more thing I thought everyone might find interesting - When I was getting rejected from porn agencies I thought it was because they thought I didn't look good enough so I decided to answer a few male model ads just for shits and giggles..... and I actually got replies LOL!

Can't tell you how many times I've read interviews with directors complaining about the high failure rate for new guys not being able to perform on camera. If they don't have a quick standby available it blows the their entire shoot costing them time and money. You get one shot and if you blow it you are done. That's if you are lucky enough to even get a shot.
Your best option is to produce your own content to get noticed or try to meet some insiders at swingers events or AVN shows. Maybe offer to work for free to prove yourself. You have a much better shot if you have a giant dick and can get it up. There are enough average performers.
Have to admit I get tired of seeing the same guys over and over again even though I'm not really focused on the guy.

Exxxotica Chicago was a lot closer and you could have saved all that gas money...and heartache by taking my seminar "Breaking into The Biz."
I actually had one guy that wanted to be a pornstar and he was quite persistent so I gave him a shot.
I introduced him to a couple of swingers I know that were at the show and who produce amateur content. Since he was tested I asked if they would give him a shot in one of their productions. The girls agreed and less then 10 hrs after walking into Exxxotica he was doing his first scene...
Simply BJ scene but a scene none-the-less.
Will he continue to pursue his dream of being a star... probably but he's got a long way to go.
If you have no experience you arent going to walk in as male talent. You need to build your resume and reel to actually show a producer you can get the job done. And when I mean get the job done I mean scenes with women that you arent attracted to. You have to be a soldier and pay your dues.

Like many other endeavors in business, I think that the producers, directors and studios are going to continue using the guys they are familiar with, and believe will get the job done with a high degreee of success.
Basically, and especially in an economically slower business environment, very few male openings are going to occur.
It used to be that, if a new girl was hot enough -- and insists that she will only work with her boyfriend -- guys were given a chance. BUT, they had better be able to deliver if they want to stay around.
If the guy just isn't cutting it, I think it's easier than ever for the producers, directors and studios to "pry" a hot talented girl away from the "boyfriend exclusive" thing (assuming that the girl really wants to break into the business).

I use guys trying to break into porn all the time for my Fuck A Fan series. Out of the hundreds who have done Fuck A Fan, one is now full time male talent - Michael Vegas
The reason there is so few guys who make their living doing porn scenes is there hardly any production any more.

Here's a question.....and I'm not saying I'd do this but why does 'gay for pay' come up when trying to get in the biz? How does taking cock translate into getting straight work? What does that even prove? From what I've heard, guys that do 'gay for pay' have a hard time getting straight work because the industry wants nothing to do with them.
Also, let's say I were to do a little 'dirty work'...wouldn't I still have to go through an agency (that won't take me)to get that kind of work?

^There may be a bigger demand for performers in the gay market so that's why gay for pay is one route to go but pornlaw's advice about being about having sex with women you aren't attracted to is even more important because if you aren't into guys then getting wood and keeping it is going to be really hard(no pun intended). The downside of doing gay porn is that you may get black listed from the straight market.

Just my thoughts but if joebang is straight he should not be doing gay porn, nor should anyone do what they are uncomfortable doing on film. There are porn stars who took this approach, gay for pay, and regretted it, such as Peter North, he has said so in interviews.

You could take it one step further with the question of how many guys make a living as male talent.
Subtract the guys who own their own production studio, and star in their own videos. Not talking about them. Just talking about talent.
Now how many of them actually make a real living from the business? That means that they have a house, car, money in their pocket, etc, from just porn.
What would that number be?

I talked to a couple friend who own companies, we compared notes, and we all agree there are roughly 25 to 30 guys.
The real issue is at one time there were roughly 150 boy/girl scenes shot a day in Los Angeles, now there are less than 50 a day.
When you consider that a lot of these scenes are done by talent that own their own companies, directs, edits or does something else there is very, very little work out there for people who try to make it as male talent alone.

That's what I meant. Is there any of them that make it as just male talent alone. Meaning that they have a house, car, and pay all their bills from just being male talent, and nothing else.
25-30 is way more of them than I would have thought. I would have picked a number closer to zero.

^I don;'t think there is anything wrong with the podcats but Micheal started in 1997 when the porn industry was a huge industry where almost anyone could make a lot of money doing porn. I don't know if the info he share is going to help anyone trying to break into today's porn industry.

Pat: Your right its a completely different thing. However, Michael was one persistent dude and I bet if someone did similar preparation as he did in the first stage (breaking through with companies) Joe Bang should at least have some shoots lined up for him.

Aside from a drastically reduced number of productions compared to even 2 years ago, the other problem facing potential male talent is that there are HUNDREDS of guys who call agencies every week wanting to do this for a living. As a director for almost 20 years now, I can tell you that the only new guys that I have added to my roster over the years came by way of recommendation from another producer or director.
I remember when James Deen first came into the business, his agent at the time begged me to use him and I kept blowing him off. One day I finally broke down and said send him over and the guy was incredible. Talk about making a living from being male talent, he probably works 28 days out of a month and his rate is sky high now. He is the exception however.
Veteran male performers are hitting me up all the time telling me how slow it is. This is probably the worst time in history to decide that your dream is to make a living in porn.
Not saying you should give up, but you should know what you're up against.
P.S. I drove out here from Toronto to be a rock star and ended up in porn somehow. Life is unpredictable. Stick around as long as you can. Unlikely things seem to always happen in L.A

The industry doesn't seem to really need men. The only way guys get into is by knowing someone in the biz who's producing and you happen to be the lucky dude he calls on to come out for some shoots.
You have better odds with starting your own series and hoping for success there than working for someone else.

You clearly didn't do you homework for this escapade. Personally I thought the thread was a punchline set up along the lines of:
I drove here from Cleveland to be a porn star.....
"And I call got was this T-Shirt!"
"Crabs!"
"Herpes!"
"Bleeding Hemies!"
Etc etc etc.

Do you know the way to San Jose?
I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way.
Do you know the way to San Jose?
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose.
L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years. How quck they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas
You can really breathe in San Jose
They've got a lot of space. There'll be a place where I can stay
I was born and raised in San Jose
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose.
Fame and fortune is a magnet.
It can pull you far away from home
With a dream in your heart you're never alone.
Dreams turn into dust and blow away
And there you are without a friend
You pack your car and ride away
L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years. How quck they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas
I've got lots of friends in San Jose
Do you know the way to San Jose?
Can't wait to get back to San Jose.

Another option along the lines of the guy who suggested gay (or TS) porn but not as
extreme is to offer your services for F2M strapon porn and BDSM sites like Kink.com
located in San Francisco. That's how Bobbi Starr got started but of course she is
a female.

A better option would be to sell the van, go back to cleveland, and start shooting amateur girls in cleveland. Then make your own website, and if you can't afford that, then just do a clips4sale site. It would still be better than trying to break in as talent in L.A., which doesn't make that much money even if you could break in.

What I don't understand is why any porn performer tries to make a living off of doing porn. Just from a standpoint of acknowledging that doing porn for money isn't going to last forever, they should have a job that can pay the bills when porn is slow. Male or female.

I would guess that one way to get in is to offer to work for free for a while and as payment (if you were any good) have your name spread around and get more chances to work for other director (still for free).

People who go into porn or the entertainment biz in general don't think that far ahead dude. The people who go into porn or the entertainment biz in general (i.e. music or acting) are not your typical dependable hard-working studious academic types. They are not the type who plan their lives out and have a long term goals planned out. Most of them cannot deal with a 9-to-5 job. I'm not just talking about porn people look at famous singers, musicians, and actors. Most of them fit this profile.
Your typical female pornstar is a high school grad or dropout, wild child who after leaving high school quickly bored of minimum wage 9-to-5 job and turned to nude modelling, stripping, and/or escorting which eventually led to doing adult movies in order to charge more money as a "star". Some are women who came from extremely strict conservative religious families (e.g. Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, home schooled) and as soon as they turned 18yo broke free and went buck wild.
The male pornstars are typically slackers, druggies, ex-cons, suitcase pimps (aka boyfriends of above mentioned females), sometimes family members of people already working in porn industry. Either that or they are rich and can afford to start their own companies.
Like guy above said working as a pornstar long-term is a risky endeavor. Think about it. If you work 5-10+ years in porn what happens when and if you try to leave the biz and get a "normal" job? What will you put on your resume? Who will you use for references? That alone limits your options. You might get lucky and have the opportunity to make a career change during a period of high growth hiring in an industry that doesn't care about your experience or academic credentials. The perfect example of that was the past real estate boom. Lot of pornstars left the biz and did real estate for a while until the real estate market crashed. Unfortunately now its a recession and if you left the porn biz you'd be competing with all kinds of people for even low paying jobs. So right now a lot of stars have to resort to either escorting or drastically cutting their lifestyle and spending. Which is why a lot of stars no longer live in LA area.
When you get older you start thinking about stuff like healthcare insurance especially if you have kids (btw, Obamacare would help pornstars). Nobody thinks about health insurance until they get sick or hurt. This is probably why most pornstars quit doing porn after a year or two. They see the writing on the wall. Most cannot make a decent living or they realize the longer you stay in the biz the harder it will be to leave later. Lot of washed up older performers who were very well known stars end up working low paying jobs behind-the-scenes at porn companies because of this (e.g. makeup, sales, administration, movie set flunkies, etc).
If you are smart you save your money and either go back to school to learn a trade or maybe start a small business. But this goes back to the profile above. Lot of them are not the studious classroom or hardworking types. You may also need to move to another state where its less likely people will recognize you. Another thing I'd advise. If you have done porn and change careers stay out of professions involving kids. Look at what has happened to minor barely known pornstars who tried to be teachers. Public finds out you've done porn you will be crucified.
Just my 2 cents. I'm not trying to demonize the industry I'm trying to inject a dose of reality into people like this guy who fantasize about being an adult performer.

C'mon everybody we know its more or less impossible to break into the industry as a male still I think it would be interesting to try to give Joe some good advice in here.
As I've stated earlier I would seek out porn that features more unknown guys who are supposed to look like amateurs. Fuck Team 5 (I guess most of these produced for Bangbros and Realitykings are shot in Miami though) etc.

$150/scene is a waste of time.
However, there is a huge demand for the amateur stuff.

^ I would concentrate on content production to start with. Try to come up with some kind of niche that nobody is doing yet. The market is flooded with vanilla sex scenes. To start selling it you could start out using clipsforsale.com. Setting up your own website is more involved and more expensive. You could hire someone to set it up for you or buy some books or take some classes to learn how to do it yourself. But the content itself is the most important thing because that is your product.
