I always took it to mean the date it was filmed if it was an original flick, or the date it was compiled if it was a compilation. But recently I came across a Playgirl flick that had production date of June 2008 or something like that on the box, and it wasn't a compilation, but there was a Tina Tyler scene in the flick that was filmed three years ago.
