HI, I've been reading your boards here for a while, but I would appreciate some feedback on this one. I've recently hit it off with a great guy but, but his last serious girlfriend was a hardcore pornstar. How do I get past, um, his past? What do you guys think? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi Suzy Q and welcome to ADT.
I realize advice coming from a hard core porn star, on this issue, may not be what you're looking for, but I just couldn't stop myself.
In my opinion, the key phrase in your query is "I recently hit it off with a great guy". My advice to you is, stop worrying about his past and enjoy the present(s). If he truly is a great guy it shouldn't matter what or who he did in the past. I say go for it. If you don't give him a chance, you'll always wonder "what if".
Just my two cents...
xoxo

SuzyQ -
I don't think the issue of someone's past should be pertinent unless it in some way affects your ability to pursue the type of relationship you would like to have with the person. (example: he's on parole and can't leave the State.)
I have had the pleasure of meeting some very wonderful people such as Tina Tyler through my work here at ADT. (I had a great lunch with her just last week.) I've learned that most porn stars are just real down-to-Earth people that happen to have sex for a living. The performers that fit the hyped media image of porn stars seem to be in the minority. It shouldn't really be anything to worry about.

As long as he isn't constantly bringing her up, I wouldn't worry about it. It's in the past. If he's bringing her up all the time, then you may havee some problems ahead.

Hi SuzyQ:
I'm not thrilled with my boyfriend's past either (and he's probably not thrilled with mine.) I know it's not the same situation, but I'm sure we've had many of the same discussions/feelings/etc. After much thinking I realized what it was that actually bothered me. It was simply the fact that he loved someone who I consider completely lacking in class, ambition and intelligence. Then I realized that I spent three years with a guy who had nothing going for him except that he was nice, sincere and made me feel good about myself. That's what I needed at one time in my life. And my boyfriend's ex was what he needed at one point in his life.
Before you can get past it you should figure out exactly what it is that bothers you. Look beyond porn star because like any profession porn stars cover the array of people (some nice, some mean, some pink, some green - you know what I mean )

I should clarify what I mean when I say 'exactly what bothers you'. Is this situation bringing up sexual insecurities? Are you comparing yourself to his ex in other ways? Does it affect how you view this great guy?
Once you figure out exactly what it is, I think you'll have a much easier time realizing that it shouldn't affect your current relationship.

I think my question also is what exactly that bothers you about his past?
Do you have concerns about his sexual history and health? In that case, ask him to be tested and to see the results. There is nothing inapropriate with that in this day and age, especially considering his previous partner.
Are you having insecurities about being compared as far as sexual performance?
Just because she was a porn star dosn't mean she was great in bed. Passion and desire fuel great sex and being an actress does not mean she brings that to bed in real life.
(Also consider, maybe your new friend may have learned some tricks that he can bring to bed and share w/ you. )
As far as sexual histories and the emotions that are brought up by that, I think that too is a part of living in this day and age. It is difficult to overcome feelings of jealousy, insecurities etc, we all expericence them.
If he really is great, can be honest, is willing to communicate thru what your feeling, I say give it a shot.
And Welcome! to ADVD.

Wow,
You guys work fast. THANKS! I really do need to figure out what really bugs me about this whole thing. At first, it was just a shock he would go out with a pornstar, then it was the, "OK, I've seen her work- OH-MY-GOD" stage. Then the health issue and I think I'm at the insecurity and comparison stage. He never brings her up other than to say she called. I bring her up-which I'll stop doing. He's already been tested and checked out- A-OK there and he is very patient and good about talking it all out. So gang, I think he's a keeper for a while, I just need to get a grip.
Thanks for the advice! I'm glad I found you for a different perspective. My friends that know, all just are repulsed by the whole idea, but he's honest about his past which is more than I can say about some of their husbands and boyfriends!
I'll keep ya'll updated.
Thanks again- Suzy Q

You know, I think honesty's important in a relationship. But I don't think I would volunteer that sort of info!
"Oh yeah honey, did I forget to tell you that I have a thing for transexual midget porn stars? Oops sweetie, am I oversharing?"

I guess I don't see the difference between sleeping with a porn star or someone with a really slutty past. A lot of us have slept with someone who was the town bike, so I guess we're all a little guilty of what your boyfriend did.
The point is... he's with you now. His past shouldn't matter. Just be glad he was honest with you.
I agree with Drew, the people I've met in the adult industry are some of the nicest, most down to earth people I've met. They are open with their sex life and have come to terms with who they are. Most people can't say that of themselves. Rather than hiding behind this big facade, it's "what you see, is what you get". You have to respect that.
