I might have to start submitting some reivews on this site. When I rent a movie I usually bow down to God if I'm lucky enough to get one good scene out of the whole DVD. I seem to have a way higher standard than most of the reviewers on this site. Most of the movies I see would get a 0-1 star grade from me. Only a few movies (out of hundreds) have I seen I'd give a 4 to. I have never seen a '5' movie. Some of the reviewers seem to give '5's to just about everything. I know nobody's gonna agree with me, as usual, but I think reviewers should be a lot tougher when dishing out 'stars'. If the scene sucked, don't give it a 2.5, give it a 0.

I personally wonder how many people REALLY care what kind of grades reviewers give scenes/movies, after all, it's all subjective and it all depends on the personal taste of the reviewer.

I mean for example, Roger T. Pipe gave Anal Ball a 0 for a rating but I thought it was awesome and didn't let his reviews bother me.

I only read reviews to know whos in the cast, who does a scene with who, what are they wearing, how long is the movie etc, I don't read reviews because it's important to me what the reviewer thinks of the movie.

I think the reason for this may be simply because, for the most part, reviewers look at the kind of titles that appeal to them. A fan of gonzo is more likely to give a gonzo movie a higher rating than someone who views it and is a fan of more softcore couples-oriented stuff.

I know this is definitely true of me. Aside from the odd title that I'm just checking out because I want to try something "new", most of my reviews are done on titles that I have a reasonable expectation of liking. I'm not afraid to give low scores, I just tend to be very picky about what I spend time reviewing is all. Life's too short, and I don't get paid enough not to be. :)

Word.

I pretty much only review titles I expect to like. I would advise that no one get too caught up in the whole "ratings" thing because like someone mentioned earlier, that is all subjective. Forget the little snowflakes or whatever other method they use and try actually reading the body of the review. If their description of the action (for the reviewers that actually provide this) sounds like something you'd like, then go for it. Who cares what they actually rate it? Everyone's tastes are going to be different.

By the same token, I would never give someone an extremely low rating or a zero; no one who put their time and effort into making a movie deserves to have it bashed to that extent. I know this is the internet and people, for some strange reason, love to read cynical and scathing remarks but I'm not falling into that trap. If a movie didn't move me, I have no problem saying so but I'll also be as constructive as possible about my criticisms and complimentary as possible about what I did happen to like.

My advice to Moonchimes or anyone else who has his "problem" would be to find a reviewer whose taste tend to resemble your own and follow that reviewer, not the one you always disagree with. That's ASKING for continued disappointment. I don't read the reviewers who I think grade too easily or whom I never agree with. Make use of that "Get To Know Your Reviewer" (which I should probably add to now) link at the top of the reviews page.

Moonchimes says when he rents a movie he's lucky to get one good scene out of the whole DVD. Now I find that a little hard to believe and I'm no pushover. Someone might say you grade too harshly and seem jaded. It's all personal taste. For the most part, I'd say the people who review for ADT have a helluva lot more experience reviewing and seen more porn than most people, so I'd tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. I can't see someone working for an adult publication who gives 0's to everything that comes across his desk staying employed for very long. Trust us, the majority of adult movies released do not all deserves 2's and below, despite what you may think.

I pay no attention whatsoever to reviews, I don't read them at all and here's why:

I don't trust reviews because a lot of them are done by people who get free copies (screeners) from the porn companies and the reviewer feels obligated to give it a good review because they want to keep getting free porn. I think you'll probably find that half of all reviews or even more than half are done by people that received screeners (free copies) from the porn companies.
I'm sure there are people here on ADT that post reviews that get screeners, not all but some.
I liken it to the AVN awards, if you buy ads in their magazine you'll get nominations and awards. If companies send out screeners (free copies) they will probably get good reviews even though the movie sucks ass because the reviewer knows if they give good reviews the free porn will keep coming. If you give them a bad review the flow of free porn will stop.
That's why I don't bother reading any reviews, most of the time they aren't accurate.
Plus, everyone has different tastes anyways.
I rent a title, if I like it I buy it, simple

Not me, I've (re)viewed it all... softer stuff, harder stuff, gay stuff, transsexuals, all-oral, gangbangs, mini gangbangs, all black, all white, gonzo, storylined, all sex, rough sex, pissing, all swallowing, Euro, (French, huh?) porn, and my ratings depend on how I liked the release, not how I liked the genre.

I only read reviews when I'm ready to purchase, not really based upon reviewers opinion, but general stuff that goes on in the scenes, or what the performers looked like.

(It's funny, I hate critics, but I guess I am one, so I guess I hate myself... time for some more self-abuse, )

M.B. - Yep. Many of us get screeners, and yes, some to give better reviews to them so that they can keep getting free porn. Luckily most of those people are extremely apparent. Do I do it?

Crucifixio - Very well said.

As to the general points of this thread, all I know is that more than anything I try to be consistent with my reviews. I know that everybody has different tastes and that everybody won't agree with what I write. I hope that people will be able to read a couple of my reviews on movies they have strong feelings about and see where we agree and disagree. From that I hope they can look at some of my other reviews and decide if it's going to be something they might like or not. I also know that everybody looks for something different in reviews, which is why I try to keep the same format, that way they can check out the technical aspects, extras, who's in what scene, and a separated rundown of what happens in each scene and what my thoughts are in each scene. I know that I write some of the most detailed reviews out there, and I know that not everybody wants to read the entire thing. I hope that by keeping my format the same they can scan through to pick up just what they want to know.

Do I get screeners? Yep. I think you'll be challenged to find any reviewer out there who's written a few hundred reviews who doesn't get a few free movies.

Do I give screeners preferental treatment? Kinda. I always try to review screeners before movies I buy personally because I feel that companies who care enough to send me something deserve that kind of care back from me. (No, I'm not trying to say that to get more porn. Believe me, I have plenty on my desk right now!). It does not mean that they get better ratings out of me. I've given plenty of ratings below 1.5 to screeners. I think when I passed 1000 reviews Drew crunched a few numbers and found out that my average rating was a 3. I try to review a wide range of styles and companies, but since we all gravitate to what we enjoy more I couldn't be happier than having a 3 average!

Reviewer ratings can easily be plus or minus a point (star, snowflake, whatever). It depends on your likes. You might like a movie and I might hate it. Myself, I try to be fair with reviews as far as ratings. I am very opinionated in stating what I like or dislike and why. There are fair reviewers that try to do a good job regardless of their personal tastes. Like many others I usually review movies which I expect to enjoy. I have reviewed movies blind going in and given them a fair review, even if they weren't my personal cup of tea. When doing so I consider the target audience, state who that audience is, and rate it accordingly. I've given ratings as low as 1 star and as high as 4 stars.

I don't know. We can talk about it all we like, but it's not going to change anything. The reviews themselves are what matter. If they don't work for you, then fine, but I think Astro really nailed it. The key is being consistent, and being true to what you like. Even if people who read your reviews don't agree with you, they can still glean useful information by how you've reviewed similar movies before, and more importantly, by cross-referencing that information with reviews written by others. This is why it's ALWAYS good to have more reviewers! So please, by all means, Moonchimes, we'd love to have you join the reviewer fold. Give 'em all zeros if you like--just tell us why . When we get to know you, your reviews will be very useful as well!

Telling people ABOUT my reviews just seems ridiculous to me. Read them yourself--I put alot more work into them than I do a single post in the forum. It's why I write so few of them. If they're not of any use, then pass them by. I know for a fact their useful or at least interesting to some people, and that goes about 100 fold for Astro's reviews.

It goes without saying that I'm about 100 times LESS cynical than M.B. is, however--so take that as you may.

I totally missed this...
This could be true, but I've purchased something like 80% of the she-male DVDs I've reviewed. And if you can spot the ones I got as "screeners" than perhaps you should become an investigator.

(I've had a studio contact me, after I gave one of their DVDs, which I did happen to really like, a good review, saying I can have more if I kept the good reviews coming. It didn't take me long to say a big fat NO . I'm not a sellout. If I happen to get a "freebie" and like it, then I like it, if I hate it, then I hate it, if a studio can't handle the truth, then they should re-examine whether or not this is the right business for them to be in. I believe porn fans are the most demanding type of fan, )

I don't do that, never have, never will, but I may have seen that done, maybe not here, but on other review sites.

There's just so much damn porn released every month,

MB, that's just not the case here.

Most of the screeners sent to adt reviewers come thru me. Every reviewer I send screeners to knows that I only want an honest review. Every studio that sends us screeners knows they are getting an honest review. Most of them are truly looking for real feedback not a promo piece.

Really, it doesn't matter anyway. There's so much more to a good review than the ratings. A good review provides enough info for readers to decide for themselves.

M.B. - you must not read reviews for anything then. Most mainstream DVD reviewers get free screeners from the studios; most mainstream movie reviewers get free (and advance!) viewings of the films; most book reviewers get free copies of the books; free passes to the play; free tickets to the concert; free copies of the CD, etc.

And most studios know that just because they are letting their stuff be seen for free that they are going to be treated fairly when the reviewer writes about what they saw/heard.

I can see why M.B. might think his logic makes sense, but if you look at it, you can see it's tremendously flawed:

Why on Earth, if I received something from a company for free that was bad, give it a good review? So I can keep getting more free CRAP? That doesn't make sense. If it's good it's good, if it's not it's not. You're not going to hurt my feelings by not sending me more of your sub-par product which will likely just get used as a coaster anyway.

As Steph said, the majority of her reviewers get their screeners through her and not directly from the distributors, so I'd guess that alleviates some of the pressure or the feeling of obligation to them. If I don't like an Evil Angel release, I don't have to worry about them not sending more DVDs because I said so, I can continue to get them through Steph anyway, no fear of reprisal.

And TheLoneGunman makes the most valid point of all: every form of entertainment comps the reviewers. But you still read bad reviews, don't you? ADT is no different. No one is being overly easy or biased to anyone for any reason. You can rest assured they're just giving their honest opinion.

Well it looks like this debate has pretty much been cleared up, so to speak. I personally like the reviews for their ability to describe a scene in gratuitous detail, as opposed to how high or low it is rated. I think it is important that reviewers always give detailed content analysis regardless of how much or how little they like the film they are reviewing. That way if the reviewer doesn't like the film in their overall rating then the people reading the content of said film can decide for themselves if this film may be relevant to them. It would seem that it is almost impossible to objectively review adult films because there is so much personal preference and subjectivity which affects everyones opinions. And as we have learned through our capitalist media structure there is no such thing as objectivity, especially when issues of economics are involved.

when i first found this site, i noticed alot of the movies i liked and was interested in purchasing had no reivews. i want to help anyone who is thinking about purchasing anything i already own, so by adding a review i can give them some information that they might not otherwise have.

for the most part i try to make the review as factual as possible ... a breakdown of each scene including what happens, the names of performers, running time, extras, etc. and whatever else i find noteworthy for each movie.

so far every review of mine has a high rating, because ALL are movies from my personal collection and obviously i would not own the movie unless i thought highly of it.

i would encourage you to add your own reviews! this site is one of the best guides available and any information you contribute in your reviews would surely be helpful to someone.

TheLoneGunman,

You are comparing apples to oranges. The reviewers you refer to for mainstream movies, plays etc. get paid to do reviews, it's their job to give viewers/readers an informed review. Nobody reviewing porn gets paid by a newspaper or tv show to do reviews. Regardless, I don't read reviews of movies or music anyway. I usually know what I might be interested in.
The only time I'll ever check out a porn review is to see if the reviewer listed the entire cast, which doesn't always appear on the box.
I'm not trying to slag this site in any way, I like it for the boards and the new release page.
My position is that a reviewer that receives free screeners will be more likely to give a favourable review where it isn't warranted. I take ALL porn reviews with a grain of salt knowing that it may not be what the reviewer actually thinks of the movie, therefore I have chosen to ignore all of them. I'm not going to waste my time trying to figure out what's an honest review and what isn't.
I'm not saying that every review/reviewer here on ADT gives good reviews for a movie just because they got a screener, I'm just saying that I ignore them for a totally legitimate reason: because there is no way to know if the review is honest because it may have been from a screener (free copy).

I was reading some reviews and here is one for Mason's Dirty Trixxx 2, which is exactly what I was talking about in my previous post. Flash points out in his/her? parting thoughts that this is his/her subjective opinion of the film, and they are not partial to the kind of sex portrayed in this film, but Flash still provides an extremely detailed, fairly objective description of the film. So in closing, I believe it is more important to view the overall content of the review, rather then basing your choice on the extremely subjective ratings system.

What the heck are you talking about? Nowhere in Astro's post did he say this. He said he tends to review screeners BEFORE he reviews his bought stuff--not that he gives favorable reviews because they're screeners. If you choose to be this cynical great, but don't go putting words into peoples mouths to "prove your point."

While there may be no one on this site who gets paid to review porn, there are plenty of paid adult reviewers out there who get paid by their company (magazine, website or otherwise) to review porn.

But now you know that our tastes are totally opposite so you have a base line. You can often learn just as much from someone you disagree with as someone who shares your exact thoughts.

And for the record, Anal Ball is the worst adult movie of all time not directed by Lizzy Borden or Kid Vegas. Zupko still owes me two hours for that one. I will collect one day. Maybe not in this life, but I will collect....

As for overall ratings being too high. That's an interesting point. On a 1-5 scale, it would be important to know where a reviewer starts. I use a 1-10 or A-F scale and for me, an average movie is going to be a 5 or a C. It's in the middle. Other reviewers I know start at zero and work up. That would mean a 3 is pretty good and a 4 is outstanding.

I've been looking at my own scale because I don't know if I really even review "average" stuff any more. Private, RLD, Anabolic, DVSX, Zero Tolerance, Evil Angel, Diabolic....this is ALL above average to start with.

Of course one could always just read Patrick Riley if one thinks that ratings are too high across the board.

You just can't compare mainstream reviewing to porn. There are probably very few reviewers in the porn world that are actually paid to do it, usually it's someone at the magazine or website that does other things as well as review. How many magzines or websites would pay someone just to review, it's just not an expense most would justify, and those reviews are also usually skewed because again, companies paying for ads on the site or in the magazine get good reviews for obvious resons. A huge amount of porn reviews are done with screener copies.
I somehow doubt that Hustler magazine would ever give one of their own movies a bad review, if you know what I mean.

I love doing movie reviews and yes I happen to get some screeners sent my way from time to time. Do I review those before a dvd I buy or rent, perhaps. I want to get a dvd and be so turned on that I have to write about it, I love putting word to screen telling everyone why I loved a particular scene or that a girl who was new to me so turned me on!! That is such a kick for me to say good things about a dvd, why say all bad things. Now I do try and point out if I find a shadow issue or that I don't really like creampies all that much. I try and make my reviews as fun as possible and also informative. I'm trying to not be as cookie cutter with the format, I mean there are only so many positions right, hehe!! I will keep trying to make my reviews better but I still think they will be very positive in nature forever. I don't go into a review looking to slam a title and it's been a rare occasion that I get something I just don't find anything to like about it.

Steph, I'm not insulting anyone. I can find out for myself what I like and what I don't like. Some people may like what I do, some may not.
Reviews are subjective even when done without screeners, and then when you add a screener into the mix, I choose not to read them, how is that insulting?
All I'm saying is that it's very difficult to know when a screener was used and when it wasn't so I choose not to read reviews on ANY website or ANY magazine.
If people take that as an insult, well that's just too bad.
I think for myself and make up my own mind on what's good and what isn't.

You can't say whether you're insulting anyone or not. You are insulting me and most other reviewers here by saying we're dishonest and you don't even know us. The REASON you give for calling us liars is beyond absurd. Excuse me, but I DO find that insulting. Don't question my integrity or anyone else's because you're overly paranoid about something that really isn't worth all this talk about.

You're really hung up on this with or without a screener thing. What you fail to realize is that whether a reviewer reviews a screener or not, it doesn't play into how they review the movie. At all. Get it in your head. A reviewers opinion will remain the same, regardless. There is no incentive at ADT to lie or fudge the facts. Whether or not a reviewer is reviewing from a screener is so inconsequential, it's not even funny. When I pop a DVD into my player, I'm not thinking about whether or not I paid for it, my mind is solely on the action.

The fact that a reviewer reviews a screener does not make his review any less honest or legitimate. So you're of the mind that if someone receives something for free, it automatically skews their perception and they become dishonest in hopes of getting more free stuff? If that were the case, every review in nearly every form of media would be dishonest and they are not. If you believe the only reviewers on the up-and-up are the ones that pay for what they review, you're DEAD wrong. I hardly find your reasoning to be legitimate, just a screwed-up and bullheaded, uninformed opinion.
Agreed. But by that same token, ADT isn't affiliated with anyone, so there are no loyalties to betray. Of course Hustler isn't going to slag one of their own movies, but does that mean that Hustler reviewers are incapable of giving an honest review to a product that isn't theirs just because they received it free of charge? I don't get your line of thinking and I think, neither does anyone else.

No he isn't. Yes, mainstream reviewers are paid. They're also pampered by studios much more because they're openly out there and easily reachable. Those of us here aren't paid. We do it 'for the love of the game'. Your comments here say that you think that we:
1) aren't really qualified to write our opinions because we're not paid
2) are mostly dishonest because we can't help but give a favorable review if we're given a DVD.
Gee, I can't see why anybody would be insulted by that!

That's the beauty of the internet, real people, from all walks of life and from all over the world, sharing opinions. I'm pretty sure the majority of people on this site do it "for the love of the game" as astroknight said, what really is there to gain? There are many other resources to find reviews etc when making a decision to buy, it's not like ADT has a monopoly on reviews. I trust the opinions of a regular porn fan than that of a professional "critic" from a trade mag where I'm willing to bet the real "hidden agendas" are.

Arguing devil's advocate here , OK . But say , just say , that someone normally received screeners from one of the best studios in the biz , a studio they were very happy to watch movies from normally . But on this one occasion they got sent a disc that was an absolute stinking turkey , with little to no redeeming features .

Knowing that an honest appraisal would get them kicked off the screeners list for all those other great discs , what would the reviewer do ? An upstanding and true writer would make the obvious decision , but a less reputable character ... ? That's my one area of concern with screeners . In the magazine and newspaper world there's a writer's reputation to think about , which would probably act as deterrent to most dodgy reviews . Is there really the same pressure online ? I don't know .

Just to be clear , this is not an attack on any of the reviewer's who've posted in this thread , all of whom I respect . Hell , I've bought discs based on their reviews and been very happy ., and I expect to do the same in the future . Rog - thanks for the great write up of Tatiana , it's been one of my top sets of discs for ages now .

To M.B. - If you never listen to anyone's opinion on anything then you must have a very slow ability to lock onto new trends . There's so much out there , and so much changing on a near daily basis ( in every field ) that having a little faith in other's opinions is necessary for me to survive . If you've found a better way to exist , then good on ya .

On screeners I can't speak for other reviewers, but it doesn't change the way I review.

I've been kicked off of pleny of screener lists. It would be very easy to keep everyone happy with glowing reviews of all of their movies. I started out reviewing movies that I had bought and still do that on titles the I pick up. People used to say that those reviews were too positive, but of course they were going to be good. They were reviews of movies I liked enough to own.

Do some reviewers soften thier views because of free movies? Probably. I have just always taken the honest approach. It doesn't always make people happy. In fact, there are a few people who post here who hate me for it. On the other hand, people know that when I do give a positive review, it's honest. They know that if I blast one title, I may turn around and love another. Zupko, Mike John, Wanker, Jim Powers, Mason...these people get it. Others don't. Hopefully the people who read my site, whether they like my reviews or hate them, understand that they are honest and find something of value in them.

That was probably a worthless post. I need food.

I just took a look at the 19 reviews that I've done, and these average out to a rating of 4. Some were as low as a 2, only one got a 5, and there were six that were 4.5. Interestingly, I've given out lower ratings to screeners than to one's that I've rented, probably because I've been willing to sample some studios/directors that I otherwise wouldn't think of renting.

Although everyone who writes a review is being subjective, I think they do have the responsibility to express themselves well enough in writing to say what exactly it is they feel is well or poorly done in a film. And I don't think they should hesitate if they see something done poorly - the studios released the title to the buying/renting public, so they should be mature enough to deal with whatever someone writes.

I have actually thought about any bias creeping into my assessments of a screener title vs. one that I've rented - I've wondered if I let myself go softer on the screeners because I'm not paying for them. So I've forced myself to be honest, though politely, when I think that something could have been done better, or shouldn't have been put into a final release, whether what I'm reviewing is a screener or not. I constantly remind myself that the reviews are primarily for porn fans, not for porn studios/directors, though if the latter can learn something from reading a variety of reviews, so much the better.

With regards to mainstream film reviewers, some of them rarely say anything negative about a film, and I find their reviews to be pointless to read. Some, like Roger Ebert, can give good, well-balanced assessments of what he liked and didn't like in a film. Our own big newspaper, the Philadelphia Inquirer, employs 3 movie reviewers, so readers can get a variety of opinions. How much are these people influenced by going to free screenings, and having acsess to film stars and directors? I'm sure there is some bias that can creep in to their work, but they have something that none of us here at ADT have - an professional editor who goes over anything they write before it is printed, to offer some counterbalance and critique. That's one difference between the professional movie reviewers and us amateurs.

I must have hit a nerve, mostly because I'm probably right and speaking the truth. The bottom line is that if a review is done with a screener sent out by the company that made it, I would have to think that there is more of a chance that there be a positive review than a negative one. I'm not saying that happens all the time in all publications or websites (including this one). But to deny that it's happening even here on ADT is totally absurd and all of you know it otherwise you wouldn't be attacking me the way that you are, you know I'm right. That's the way I see it, and by the reaction I got from some folks here on ADT attacking my position on this (most all from people that DO receive screeners) I'm probably right. And Crucifixio, you keep saying why would anyone write a review that isn't honest from a screener, what could they possibly gain from that. Very few companies if any make every movie well, some are really good, some stink, some are just okay. Nobody hits a home run every time. A reviewer that receives screeners on a regular basis would probably see it as beneficial to give a crap movie a good review so they can keep getting free porn that might end up being good from that same company. Why do you think companies give screeners out? To get good reviews that's why, not so someone can give it a bad review, wake up.
You all seem think that this doesn't exist and isn't happening. Almost everyone that has disagreed with me on this subject readily admits to receiving screeners, give me a break.
Why is everyone so defensive about this? I'm not saying every review on ADT or any other website is a shill for a movie/company. I'm not saying that every movie reviewed from a screener is going to be given a good review.
I'm just saying that it exists, and to think otherwise is naive.
The bottom line is that SOME people (not all) will give a bad movie a good review in order to keep getting free stuff. And I'm not singling out ADT or any other website or publication specifically for this.
All I'm saying is that it does happen and has for quite a while, that is all.
I'd like to thank all of you for even acknowledging that this even exists (rolling eyes).
Can you tell that I like to argue and debate things

Here's an idea, how about thanking the reviewers once in awhile for all the work they do? Much like the people that moderate ADT, it's a lot of free time that's being dedicated to this online community.

Even if you don't agree with the reviewers opinion, which I personally find to be the case in most instances, you can always get useful information from a write-up. Are the technical merits of the DVD good? How are the settings? Are the scenes lack-luster or energized? Is there any tease footage? How are the DVD extras? Did your favorite porn star do an anal or double anal scene? The list goes on and on.

Like I said previously. I'll occasionally check out a review to get a complete cast list, but it's very rare. I don't read reviews to decide on whether I'm going to pick up a movie. I'm real picky anyway so I don't often agree with reviews, that's also another reason I stopped reading them a long time ago, on ANY site or publication. I'm sure lots of people use them to decide on a purchases or rentals and that's cool. I'm just saying that I don't for the reasons I mentioned here and in previous posts.

No I do not know that. I have only written 8 reviews, but I have also never (never ) received a screener and then written a review.

You don't read reviews fine, but to say that good ones are written mainly because screeners are sent out I don't buy.

Either that or because you insulted the integrity of almost everybody who's written more than a handful of reviews here.
Actually, the reverse is just as true. Most people who write reviews nkow screeners are out there, so why not just write good reviews of everything you buy in hopes that those companies will add you to the screener list.
No one here has denied that it's ever happened on Adult DVD Talk. So far the only thing I'm pretty sure of here is that you're incredibly flexible as if you weren't what everybody else has said here might not appear quite so muffled to you.
And from what I've seen from you, I doubt anything anybody would say would convince you otherwise, so there's no real reason for you to continue posting in this thread.
I think most reviewers know which companies expect a 5 star rating out of every one of their releases to stay on their screener list. It's not exactly an industry secret. This makes it very easy to tell what's going on. Your statement here only makes you appear more uninformed as does your refusal to accept what you've been told by those who do have knowledge of such things.
Many companies give out screeners for many reasons. I've had a few companies send me a box full of screeners telling me they know they're lacking, now how can they improve. Some want information on their movies out there from a variety of perspectives. I've heard from more than a few sources that bad reviews don't have that much of an impact on sales. Do they want bad reviews? No, but the reason they send out screeners isn't as simple as trying to get good reviews.
Nobdy here has said that the problem doesn't exist or isn't happening. In fact, I think most everybody here has said that it does exist to some extent. You might want to decide on whether you want to talk or learn in the future.
No, those of us who receive screeners have mostly agreed with you and have tried to add clarification to the issues you've brought up.
Because most of us who write reviews do so because we care about it. I take a great deal of pride in the reviews I've written and I don't like it when some jackass says that they're basically worthless and can't be trusted because they don't know the source of the discs. You've insulted both tings I've created and my integrity as a reviewer.
And nobody here has denied that, which makes your repeated bringing up the subject here an accusation of those who review here.

Maybe you hit a nerve because of how long it takes to write a good review. Many of the reviews that you see posted on the site have taken hours to create. When you put in that much work, it is rather insulting to read posts like yours.

Some of my reviews are from screeners, others are from titles that I have purchased, rentals and titles that I have borrowed from others. I grade all of them just as hard. If you are interested here is the breakdown of my 233 reviews:
5 stars - 14
4.5 stars - 22
4 stars - 50
3.5 stars - 33
3 stars - 30
2.5 stars - 24
2 stars - 30
1.5 stars - 16
1 star - 8
half a star - 4
no stars - 2

For those who are interested, based on Rog's example, all titles start with me at 2.5 and go up or down depending on the content. All of the film, as a whole, is used to determine the overall ratings. If one scene is far below average, one scene is average and three scenes are above average in a film with five scenes, the overall rating is going to be above average. Plus then there is the camera work, plot if it is a feature or vignette film, locations, etc that go into the overall rating, plus extras. Then the audio/video get added in. A great film can sink to below average due to a poor transfer. I also try to provide enough information in my reviews so that viewers who don't agree with my tastes can still make a decent decision on whether the title might be for them or not.

BTW: I'm a he.

Your one-size-fits-all approach is rather simplistic. Do some people shill for companies? Of course; and it becomes readily apparent when they do. BUT, did you ever consider that the good companies give screeners out because they want feedback from people who's opinions they value? Certainly everyone hopes the reviews will be positive but even if we hurt their feelings we've given them a means to improve their product, instead of stumbling around like a kid trying to hit the piñata blindfolded. As an artist, I can tell you that nothing, that's N-O-T-H-I-N-G, is worth more than an informed critique of one's work.

Now, in response to your initial post, a reviewer only has two obligations:
1) to explain to the reader what the subject being reviewed is about, and
2) to give his honest opinion about it.
In no way is he (or she) required to conform to your tastes or opinions. It's up to you to find a reviewer you agree with or to do without. Bitching about it is pointless.

Finally, I have to say that cynicism may be a fine tool (I use it myself), but it makes a bad religion.

Let me, as a consumer who has relied upon ADT reviews for purchasing recommendations, give you my thoughts.

I think there is some bias, whether intentional or not, in the reviews. In general, I find it acceptable because more often than not the reviewer will clearly state his/her porn preferences in the body of the review and its direct influence on the review.

Since porn falls into so many specific genres (lesbian, group, swallowing, anal), some reviews may not be helpful at all to the reader. Some I read for pure enjoyment: Pocketcomb Pimp. That being said, I can block out or refuse to read reviews from certain reviewers. (If you check, 1 reviewer has never given a review less than 4 stars.)

In closing, I very much appreciate the time the reviewers take in posting their reviews. The reviewers are providing a service that can be used to make intelligent purchases. For most, the entertainment dollar can only stretch so far.

Actually many companies, don't care about the opinions of the review so long as the product is reviewed. It's better to get a 2 star review and have your product receive the extra exposure, than it is to not get a review at all.

O.K. I've only done five reviews so far. Only one of those was a screener, the rest I bought.

Guess what - I gave the screener the lowest rating of the five. Not a conscious decision, I just liked the other movies better.

Regarding the original topic, why are there not many low scoring reviews? Well in my case, I have bought some movies that turned out to be crap, and I simply don't want to spend two or three hours sitting through one again and writing about it. I'd much prefer to write about some of the better movies that I have.

edited for typo.

Actually MB, I think you thrive on being negative. Reviewers have not only contributed valuable info and entertainment for porn fans, but they have also provided useful feedback to studios. Some people just eat up bandwidth and give nothing but grief back to the community.

I dont really care wheter reviewers do get screeners or buy the dvds they review. I do check ADT reviews very often, so I know what they like anyway. I simply cannot immagine dvd-shopping without reviewers help anymore.
I really do prefer well structured reviews which allow me to check the actresses and acts involved VERY quickly. Dream Weaver and Selena Silver are very good exaples here.
I only get doubts when I see reviewers giving 5 stars always. Only 1 such reviewer comes to mind. I usually skip him, but he is probabely doing more for this community than I do. I cannot be but greatful for every review we get. Thank you all!

This is funny. Astroknight, you say that yes it does exist to some extent and then crap all over me for saying so.
Exactly how have I insulted anyone who posts reviews. I never said they were all useless or bogus, or even singled any of them out.
Havn't any of you actually read what I posted?
Denver Don, I NEVER said that all good reviews were from screeners.
I think that some of you are being totally unreasonable. You say that yes it does exist, but then crap all over me for saying it. Screw you. I spoke the truth and now you are hammering me for it.
I said it before and I'll say it again. There are people that will give a bad movie a good review because they got that movie for free, and it's well known. It doesn't happen all the time but it does happen. So stop being babies just because I pointed that out.
Steph I'm the one that's getting grief here. All I did was point out a practice that has been around for awhile. I never claimed anyone here specifically was doing it and everyone decided to pile on me anyway just for just for recognizing that it exists. If it makes you feel better to make me be the bad guy go right ahead, doesn't bother me one bit.

No kidding? So there are studios out there that only want to see positive reviews. It's strange they would do this with you, seeing that your website is so popular, and it's easy to see that you give honest opinions of the titles you watch, no matter who the director/studio is. If these unhappy studios won't send you anything, well sure, you don't see their bad stuff, but you don't see their good stuff either. A double-edged sword.

I've read the reviews on your website a lot, and I can tell you, if I see that no DVD's from a particular studio are being reviewed by a professional like you, I figure that a studio like this must be second or third-rate, and isn't worth my even bothering to watch any of their stuff.

You'll notice that many of the studios that avoid Rog's reviews also avoid Adult DVD Talk.
