It's like a dirty little secret that most Americans have enjoyed porn or "erotica". But while a lot of countries embrace the porn industry for the most part, we Americans are embarassed by it. Hell, even our primetime television shows are more willing to show violence and gore than sex and nudity because of this strange, puritanical view.
I'd love to see the day when adult films are accepted to such a degree we actually see porn stars make their way to the mainstream. How great would it be to see Brandon Irons promoting his next video on some talk show?
Okay, so it'll probably never happen. But still...

When porn production studios start respecting the consumer, you'll see the industry gain more respect itself. Until then....not gonna happen.
There's so much shovelware coming out of the US porn industry that it's obvious it's only about making money for them. That's fine...this is a free-market and capitalist society. But as long as porn is treated like a commodity and a money press and not as a true entertainment medium, you'll see no improvement.

They should show A Good Source of Iron during prime time TV. People will get used to it and wonder what the fuss about porn was all about.
It's just right wing christian wack jobs that is putting the thumbscrews when it comes to nudity.

Are you implying that the prime time line up on every major network isn't shovelware all about the money? I mean obviously that's why we see such a plethora of new ideas.
It's nothing like porn with a ton of known sellers like cop dramas, medical dramas, and rich kid dramas recycled over and over again. . .

If porn was actually interesting, it would already be primetime.
99% of all porn is boredom - like watching Ed Powers tell jokes, or Holly Hole take it up the butt for the 1000th time.

I think America in a hole perspective doesn't like to promote anything that is different without profit. The women in this industry are just as, if not more beautiful than most 'mainstream' models. You wouldn't see anything go mainstream until the real higher ups either in congress or the corporations that finance them get a peice of the pie. If the rich got richer from porn in would be in the corner supermarket. It is mostly a privatly owned buisness that doesn't dish out money to the greedy, like health care, insurance companies, big media and other billion doller a year industries.

You are completely missing the commercial aspect of mainstream television and movies. At least prime time shovelware has sponsors who use same to entice the viewers to go buy their product.
Meanwhile....porn producers pretty much film anything they think the viewing public will use as masturbation material. There is no "point" to porn other than porn itself. The "point" to mainstream media is multi-faceted. The producers of mainstream WANT to make the product watchable, engaging and entertaining because they want you to tune in to the program week after week to help drive profits from their sponsors which, in turn, drives profits for themselves. Porn has no such equivalent....it's smut produced for the value of the smut itself...nothing more. So there is little to no incentive to make it entertaining or engaging.

No. Most of these are excuses. The mind numbing drivel that passes for entertainment on TV couldn't possibly be mistaken for having any respect at all for it's audience.
No. Porn isn't just not respected. It's intolerance. There's a difference. Sex is "dirty". Sex is "evil". Of course, that doesn't explain why everybody seems to have five barefooted little terrors running around screaming at the top of their lungs. I guess sex is only wrong if you admit to doing it. We're supposed to pretend the stork brought the yungins.

I think respect and acceptance are coming. There is to much money not to.
I think porn will enter the mainstream though movies. How many mainstream actresses revived their careers posing nude in Playboy. Ann Margaret was the first to revive her career showing her tits in a movie.
I don’t think respect and acceptance will come with porn stars entering mainstream. It will come with mainstream actresses and studios making porn.
Big money awaits a mainstream actress and studio that fucks in a mainstream movie. They’re will be two versions of movie. One will be released to movie theaters. The other porn version will be leased as an add-on to the DVD release. The DVD release will generate more money. Then other actresses and studios will follow. Movie theaters will see how much money they’re losing and will start showing both versions.
And as always TV will follow mainstream movies with Broadcast TV being the last to enter.
I think Internet porn and celebrity sex tapes are opening these doors.

a porn shop was built in my town about 6 years ago. befor the construction started people were protesting. people are still protesting. i have oftin wounderd if they realize a key fact. their protesting is only drawing more attention to the shop.
the argument they have is that the shop harms children and women. that is a valid argument in my opinion. why? because not every one is all there in the head anfd the kporn may mess them up even more. on the other hand, most normal people are not going to go out harming women or children after watching porn. the same thing can be said about weapons, steroids and many other things.

I can totally accept, that they want to keep
children away from looking at x-rated covers.
But women.....tz,tz, no adult woman is forced
to buy or rent a porn movie, or ?
Porn was more respected in my country in the 90s,
the Netherlands, but this changed in the last years.
Respect has (almost) nothing to do with money, but with
quality, authenticism and anchorage in a culture.
"Private" is also listed on the US stock exchange, but
has it helped to improve the respect towards porn ? No.
Respect is gained, when erotica has moved to the mainstream.
The Playboy is respected, but hardcore isnt, and never will,
at least not in the USA.

Porn can never be mainstream and never will, Porn is a niche market and you'll always find a large part of the population who will be offended by it. Whether you like it or not, and its men as well as women. How could you even consider having porn on prime time television, that's the most absurd thing I've ever heard, after all Kids do watch television and a lot of it, do we want them exposed to that sort of stuff. I don't think so. It's 2007, if it ever was going to be mainstream it would have already happened. How many porn actors being interviewed say my family doesn't know what I'm doing, Do you really think they would like it mainstream.

I don't know if it's desirable for porn to permeate the mainstream and daily life. It does serve its purpose, but if all aspects of society were to be sexualized and all human relations objectified, I think it could become a very nauseating reality to live in. And the fantasy aspect and hence attraction of porn itself would also to a great deal be lost.

I dunno. Ask the people who voted for Bush.
And just making porn doesn't really take any talent. But doing it really well takes way more talent then most mainstream actors and directors even have. Just like anything else, you have your hacks and your artists.

Actually, all aspects of society and human relations are already sexualized. The polarity is just fucked up and people look at sex as something negative and harmful.

Right. How many liberals in the last 20 years have gone after the porn industry? I meant social conservatives. I could give a shit what they do economically. I've been financially fucked for years and my luck hasn't changed with fiscal liberals or conservatives.

I'm not trying to get into a political yelling match here...but I will explain a little bit more. A liberal socialist is not what I think of as a liberal. A socialist is a person who believes in equal resources for every person, and that the government should take care of the people like a parent...instead of people having self reliance. A liberal socialist is someone who thinks that these programs should be extended to other countries (take for instance, the issue of loose border security) and is very free about supporting a "world ecconomy" instead of a U.S. ecconomy (take for instance, how much money is pouring into Iraq as we speak). When liberalism and socialism get together, the results are disasterous because more often than not, the decision about which moral stance to take is made by the majority of the population. Unfortunately, many people, do not see the way we do about pornography...we are the minority. Just trying to make that clear. I think that the "liberals" and "conservatives" we see today are not true liberals and conservatives--they are skewed--cartoon like impersonations of who they should be. Mostly I think these days they serve the corporations.

Porn is a legitimate business and should be respected as such as well as the people that are in it.
However, too many of the directors and male talent have serious criminal backgrounds/ties and are using porn for their own criminal gains. there is male talent out here on parole, probation, and prior convictions for domestic violence, sexual assault, and narcotics related crimes. Look at the negative attention chico wang brought the industry recently.
Recently, i was told a male talent arrived to a shoot wearing a shirt with "crips" all over it. there was also a huge "CRIP" tattoo on his back and neck. both of these things were visible to all who saw the scene. He did the scene and hurt the female talent. Obviously, the director was either blind or did not care. i have watched the scene and there was the tattoo was big as could be. I'm opting for director did not care. But the bigger question is why did the studio release it?
Cops, Fireman, legislators, and politicians like to watch porn weather they admit it or not and i know plenty that do. now they see this scene and start looking at porn as a criminal element now. So here comes another black eye to the industry.
Directors and Studios have a obligation to find out who they are using as talent/directors and how the end product is presented regardless if its gonzo or not.
Recently in "LUKE IS BACK" there was a lengthy article on a talent agency operating a escort/prostitution business. We have several of those operating here currently. That is operating prostitution type escort agency and calling it talent management or agency. What are they thinking????
Lets start cleaning up our own industry and stop letting government or the religious right wing target it and trying to clean it up for us.
Just my humble opinion

I don't think you can tell them who they can and can't hire. A guy who's on parole who can get a paycheck is going to be less of a threat to society than one who can't. There aren't a whole lot of good jobs you can get with a criminal record. I don't really think this is the reason porn is looked down upon.
I continue to believe that porn would be looked down upon no matter what because that's just how people in this society regard sex for pleasure. They may secretly watch it and love it but there are too many people who won't own up to it publicly and that creates a flock mind that says "Porn is bad". And then you have the fact that the media never misses a chance to mention the fact that a guy who killed 30 people just happened to have a porn collection. And it seems to fit perfectly if there was some sexual element to his crime. But what about the other 30,000,000 people who also have a porn collection and killed nobody?

I don't think it's so much a matter of how people in the majority feel about porn as it is the fact that they've simply been programmed since birth not to even think about it. The kind of sex that's portrayed in porn is evil to them and that's that. No two ways about it. Case closed. That kind of intolerance on the part of a majority demands resistance and/or defiance.

It's a good question you ask 7_and_a_quarter and for open minded people like most of us that is the question of the day. Why isn't porn more accepted in this country? It comes down to how we think about it and our upbringing and our beliefs. I would love it to be more respected!

I could write a book about that.
Yes, the US government, forcing the European Union
to adapt the § "2257", also the GLUT of US porn,
the flood of cheap and bad german porn, much more
women degrading porn as before, primitive "rap" porn, gonzos etc., but also a conservative trend in NL and almost all european countries, also free ( legal or illegal ) internet porn. Dutch porn companies - with few exceptions - dont
invest large sums anymore. Most directly aim their movies
toward a "world market", so the movies are "americanized",
but no longer dutch. Especially most (young) women - and I knew quite a lot, who watched porn in the late 90s - totally lost their interest in the porn genre.
In the 90s, I would dare to say, that porn was nearly mainstream here. Of course it wasnt broadcasted at TV, but when I went to school here, even 3 of my teachers ( one female ) admitted that they enjoyed porn.
( I was in the - as you would call it "8th grade" - )
Porn was very openly discussed in sexual education at school. Our female teacher wanted us to differentiate between good and bad porn. Maybe this was unusual, even
for dutch standards, but at least this was possible.
There was no shame to enter a sex shop, and even if it was
illegal to buy porn before the 16th birthday, I bought
some videos with late 14. ( Most estimated me as 15 )
Renting wasnt possible, because they had to ask for an I.D., , but when I was only buying porn, and paid with cash,
it wasnt a problem. One store owner even said to me, after a little smalltalk: " I heavily doubt, that you are 16, and you have a german accent, Germans can only buy porn with 18, at least in Germany. But we arent in Germany. Dutch can only buy porn with 16, but you arent dutch. What the heck, you are charming, so please enjoy it. And if these movies dont
satisfy you enough, I can give you my private telephone number"
( To be honest, I doubt, that a boy in my age had this chance, and I am not sure, if his remark was a joke or not )
This is only a small example. Today, the video clerk would
be in DEEP trouble, selling porn movies to "minors".

Porn is inextricably tied up with people's attitudes towards sex, and while a lot of people have difficulty in talking openly and embracing their sexuality then porn will never enter the mainstream.
On a slightly different note, I always find it startling how extreme violence has become mainstream and even box office, yet explicit sex is not tolerated. It suggests that American society is more comfortable with violence than sex.
From the British perspective, things have become more liberal over the last few years. Culturally, however, the British have always had a problem taking sex seriously. Thus, while you had Deepthroat, we had Confessions of a Window Cleaner.
As a few members have noted however, porn is popular for many of us for the very reason that it is illicit and not mainstream. If porn and its stars did become mainstream then would we simply get a conveyor belt of diluted feature porn that would neither be sophisticated or sexy enough to satisfy anyone? I for one, am happy with the status quo.

I hate to sound like a broken record and yeah, it could be toned down a little but it wouldn't make a difference in people's attitude towards porn. A lot of people think that softcore nude photos are degrading to women. People have been saying porn is degrading to women forever and there was really no basis for it until pretty recently. It's just an excuse. All the slapping, spitting, choking and whatever could stop tomorrow and the anti porn lobby would march on with the same nonsense they've been spewing for decades. I grew up around these people. I know.

And I still tend to think that although the Bible-thumpers will always oppose even softcore nudes, there's no reason to antagonize the liberal feminists who will usually be for anything the religious right is against. I don't know, I think I can usually work up to at least not minding a physically rough scene if it is psychologically well presented, that is, a dominant and a submissive find each other and give each other what they both need. But when the whole tone of the scene is just condescending to the woman, I'm not going to like that, and I don't think the stereotype of an irreligious, liberal feminist that I have in my head will like that, either. I think they will be more likely to distinguish between good and bad porn if you give them half a chance (give them some amateur lesbian porn), but bad impressions still last.
But I can also understand where the people who like some of that rougher stuff are coming from when they get defensive if they feel like fans and producers of comparatively tamer hardcore porn start pointing their fingers at them. But then again, I also can't help but be a little annoyed when some of those companies and directors have that chip on their shoulder that they do what the other companies and directors won't do, but then they want the whole porn producer and consumer community to rally to their defense when they get into legal trouble.

Yes, those religious activists, radical feminists and others will not even accept softcore nude images of women and will always consider them very degrading. These people are not sensible! They are extremists. Extremists are a deadly virus to mankind. These people are usually hyppocrits and liars and thus create an extreme counter reaction.
And those producers, directors and others who are producing horrible stuff will always consider themselves artists and businessmen when in fact all they are is extremists and making many people look bad. Extremists are a deadly virus to mankind. These people are usually unsympathetic and thus create an atmosphere of distrust, disrespect, crime and low values.
