There were drive-in movie theaters that specialized in softcore porn. I lived about 10 miles from one. It may not fit your definition of pornography, but among us Puritans that was the term in use. The XXX rating (hardcore porn) was a derivative of the mainstream X rating. You & I are talking about the same movies being perceived differently in different locales. I have nothing else to offer. |

We came a long way though , in Italy the Supreme Court ordered all copies of the Last Tango in Paris to be burned due to the sodomy implied with the butter scene and the excessive pansexualism shown to be well over the "common sense of pudor" (basically it was obscene) , They only saved a few copies as evidence , Bertolucci, the director, was able to hid the master , after a long legal and cultural battle the movie was freed , rated again and even aired on TV as it was, everything changed so much that it wasn't even cut and nobody gave a fuck. So I wasn't really complaining I just meant so many things changed Edited by - LCF on 9/1/2019 4:31:14 AM |

Softcore is good as dead in the west anyway, and it's hard to get your hands on the current argentinean/korean/hong kong stuff that still seems to have some production values. In a recent thread, I mentioned seeing a double feature of Emmanuelle and The Story of O at a movie theater in the late '70s. At the time, both were super popular then Emmanuelle spawned a zillion sequels that seemed to flood cable TV in the early '80s. As for whom to cast in a remake, a leggy supermodel would be just fine or someone who can act first then sort out the sex stuff later (a la what Von Trier did for the two Nymphomaniac films). Does she keep getting roles that require a certain amount of nudity? I also wonder if anyone in Hollywood would be able to do a remake of Emmanuelle that can't get nation wide release and has to settle with going straight to video? |

| BlackSix All-Star Member pornography wasn't sex but fantasies of an impossibly hospitable world 12377 Posts 9/07 | It would be great if they returned to the original material for a remake in something like the style of the original. Sylvia was pretty unknown when she was cast so that may be the best route, finding someone with her electric screen presence would be a challenge though. If we're thinking modern active actors I think a European actress like Marion Collitard or Noomi Rapace would be interesting. The aforementioned Charlotte Gainsbourg is a no brainer but then it may seem too derivative of von Trier's film. In Europe, particularly French film there is less stigma to doing nude or sex scenes, some major French filmmakers have even integrated hardcore sex into their films (Breillat, Dumont, Carax, Guiraudie). |
