Whom would you cast?

I wish they remake it. I am a sucker for porn with a plot or characters which evolve.

Not a big fan of kiss kiss bang bang porn which seems to be the trend these days.

It was softcore porn. It's an odd question for The Porn Pool as this is a hardcore area.

it wasn't porn at all , at least here in Europe it was called "erotic" and had the rating commissions go for theatres, they rated it over 18
porn is rated Adult or XXX ,doesn't need any commission approval it's adult rated by law , its content is also regulated by law (as in no kids , no people looking like kids, no roles implying kids or hinting to kids, no animals , must have a written consesus with proof of age) , Emmanuelle had nothing of this sort it wasn't porn, regular people watched it including my mother who certainly didn't watch porn and if she did would never have discussed it with my father in front of us kids , which they openly did for Emmanuelle
Same for Histoire d'O

In America, films like Emmanuelle, Story of O, Vanessa, Alice in Wonderland, etc. were referred to often as softcore porn or soft X. There were drive-in movie theaters that specialized in softcore porn. I lived about 10 miles from one. It may not fit your definition of pornography, but among us Puritans that was the term in use. The XXX rating (hardcore porn) was a derivative of the mainstream X rating. You & I are talking about the same movies being perceived differently in different locales. I have nothing else to offer.

I understand but it came almost as a surprise to me , Emmanuelle and all those in the series have even been aired on TV ,the free ones not cables , for soft porn we mean actual feature porn movies with the parts where the genitals are visible removed , those too were aired after midnight.
We came a long way though , in Italy the Supreme Court ordered all copies of the Last Tango in Paris to be burned due to the sodomy implied with the butter scene and the excessive pansexualism shown to be well over the "common sense of pudor" (basically it was obscene) , They only saved a few copies as evidence , Bertolucci, the director, was able to hid the master , after a long legal and cultural battle the movie was freed , rated again and even aired on TV as it was, everything changed so much that it wasn't even cut and nobody gave a fuck.

So I wasn't really complaining I just meant so many things changed

IMO if its goal is to get its audience to masturbate to it then it's porn. Doesn't matter if it's real hardcore sex, fake softcore sex, a feeder fetish video of a fully clothed girl stuffing her mouth with junk food or a youtuber showing off a bunch of lingerie in 4k60fps. Porn is equally in the author's intent and in the eye of the perv.

As for a Sylvia Kristel replacement any sweet-looking modelesque unknown chick would do, rather than the pornstar-looking chicks that followed.

Softcore is good as dead in the west anyway, and it's hard to get your hands on the current argentinean/korean/hong kong stuff that still seems to have some production values.

I don't think Emmanuelle was , it was a way to show to all women that women have the right to pursue their own sexuality and the one doing so wasn't a miserable and despicable woman from the lower end of society , you have to consider the era it come out

As for Histoire d'O it was a book adaption erotic maybe certainly not porn, it was something similar to 50 Shades of Grey

This topic might have more hits in the Features area.

Softcore stuff pops up from time to time in our discussions. In a recent thread, I mentioned seeing a double feature of Emmanuelle and The Story of O at a movie theater in the late '70s. At the time, both were super popular then Emmanuelle spawned a zillion sequels that seemed to flood cable TV in the early '80s.

As for whom to cast in a remake, a leggy supermodel would be just fine or someone who can act first then sort out the sex stuff later (a la what Von Trier did for the two Nymphomaniac films).

^While I don't want to denigrate all models. I'm not sure that most models are good enough actresses to do justice to the role so it would require an actual actress that is both comfortable with total nudity on multiple occasions and having simulated sex with men and women. The first should be fairly easy to find but the latter not so much. This is the kind of role that while it will definitely get a lot of press. It doesn't mean that it will be good for the actresses career. Even if critics offer positive reviews of the performance and the movie wins awards. The reality is this kind of role can easily typecast an actress where the only thing she gets offered are roles that require nudity.

We will never know what Sylvia Kristel's career path would have been if she hadn't done Emmanuelle and while Dakota Johnson career seems to be doing pretty well after her 3 movie stint in the 50 Shades series. Does she keep getting roles that require a certain amount of nudity?

I also wonder if anyone in Hollywood would be able to do a remake of Emmanuelle that can't get nation wide release and has to settle with going straight to video?

The impact of Emmanuelle was greatly enhanced by the cultural views of its era , I don't think it would be the same today , independent women living up their sexuality and answering only to themselves are a given today and by today standards I don't think well see much nudity either , for politically correctness a naked woman is almost seen as an objectivation of her body , it would be more likely that we'd see her partners naked more than her

They have continued to make Emmanuelle films as cheap straight to cable fodder for decades. Allie Haze was cast as the 'new Emmanuelle' at one point. They have nothing really to do with the original film and try to he campy rather unsuccessfully I think.

It would be great if they returned to the original material for a remake in something like the style of the original.

Sylvia was pretty unknown when she was cast so that may be the best route, finding someone with her electric screen presence would be a challenge though.

If we're thinking modern active actors I think a European actress like Marion Collitard or Noomi Rapace would be interesting. The aforementioned Charlotte Gainsbourg is a no brainer but then it may seem too derivative of von Trier's film. In Europe, particularly French film there is less stigma to doing nude or sex scenes, some major French filmmakers have even integrated hardcore sex into their films (Breillat, Dumont, Carax, Guiraudie).
