So, every person in their early 20s is supposed to know what every design, flag or otherwise, symbolizes??? I bet if you polled the 20 year olds in this country, less than 50% of them woukdnt know who George Washington is. I remember watching The Dukes of Hazzard as a kid and had no idea what the flag on the roof of the General Lee meant. Once I found out, it didn't mean I thought any less of the show. But now, the PC police and TV Land are trying to say the show was racist.
Jeez, is there any place where people saying this or that equals racism has not infected? Calling her a racist because she had a swimsuit with the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (sorry, but it drives me nuts when people on a rant can't even get basic facts right) just shows how asinine and hypersensitive people have become.
While I totally agree that wearing a Confederate Flag bikini does not signify the wearer is necessarily racist, and for the reasons you've laid out above, namely obliviousness, nevertheless I do query whether we should be so sanguine as to give such obliviousness a free pass. Did anyone have the balls to call Sara out on it? What was her response? I'm not trying to have a go at Sara here, specifically, but any 20-something wearing such a bikini should be at least made aware of the significance of the design, since you don't need to be a member of the so-called PC Police to understand that in the USA the Confederate Flag is not just some neutral arrangement of colors and shapes. And if in querying the wearer of such a bikini 'why are you doing that?' and 'are you aware of what that design represents?', the response is 'whatever', as is so often the case when a non-politically engaged young woman is being required to think about an issue beyond the color of her fingernails, I would feel entitled to think 'vacuous narcissicistic airhead'.
