I know that the tube sites are hated by porn industry in general and considered content pirates by some by they do benefit porn industry
and customers in some ways. For example, It's a good way to increase
interest in renting movies for certain stars. For example, I was not
a Bobbi Starr fan until I saw some of her clips on tube sites. Then
I went out and bought or rented most of her movies. I've also found
scenes some of my favorite did in movies I thought were not worth
watching. After seeing clips of their scene I decided to rent or
buy those movies. So in that respect I think fans seeing some clips
of certain stars or certain movies helps the business.
The other benefit I see is preserving old movies. I'm not talking about
the classics which are still available on DVD but the tons of mediocre stuff
produced from 80s thru 2000s which are no longer available because the
companies went out of business and nobody acquired their titles. For example,
I've seen clips of scenes Jeanna Fine did which I didn't know existed.
When I tried to find the titles those scenes came from on IAFD I found that
they are no longer available. Remember they were cranking out thousands of
titles per yer in just US alone. In that respect tube sites are sort of
like Google's digital books project. They are preserving some videos that
may be lost forever otherwise.

Piracy is always a two bladed sword. On one hand when you watch a clip for free on the tubes you are not buying the DVD so they lose money. On the other hand you might not have bought the DVD anyway, for example because the content stinks or you simply don't have the money. And you might even find content on the tubes that you didn't know existed and purchase the DVD based off that so they'd actually make money. It works like this for movies, music, software, everything.

I agree with this in principle. But I wouldn't rely on tube sites as any sort of archive. They are too centralized with all the files stored in one place, and are subject to disappearing overnight, with no warning, for any reason or no reason. And the quality is low because of high compression and they are intended to be streamed and not saved and therefore are difficult to save. In the end, torrents and fileshare/filehost are a better archiving solution than tubesites, as these involve individual fans/opportunists storing the files on their computer or on various file storage sites. So if one of them goes belly-up, there are always plenty of backup copies floating around and tucked away in many physical and virtual places.

The problem is 99.9% of people who use tube sites don't do this.
That is a perfect example of lost revenue for the industry. Just because you don't think the scenes were any good does not justify not paying for them. If you rent movie from Netflix or PPV and the movie sucks, you still have to pay for. When you rent or buy a movie (porn or mainstream) that you've never seen before, you are taking the risk that you may not like the product.

I think that anything that was produced 30 or more years ago ought to be fair game for the free tube sites. The talent only gets a flat fee, no royalties, and IMO 30 years' exclusive use is enough IP protection. Beyond that it becomes a scam by which porn-makers benefit at the expense of fans and talent.

30 years ago most porn was features, why would you want to watch a feature on a tube site? Tubes are strictly for short-term masturbation and are full of modern gonzo, not features from the 70s and 80s.

If tube sites were truly used as a means previewing porn movies or content from websites then I don't think too many people would object to them. Sadly that's not why they exist and make money. These sites are designed to steal money from the people that made the content and give it to people that have no problem with stealing it because they can get away with it. Would there be many tubes sites tomorrow if every one of them was fined a million dollars for stealing content?
I agree that some people will want to buy/rent/join after seeing a particular scene or performer on a tube site but I think this is still a small minority. Most will see the scene and then spend an hour looking for more free content.
There are plenty of VOD sites to satisfy the honest paying customer with his urge. They don't cost all that much so money should not be an issue and they usually have most of the new releases within a short amount of time so no one can complain that they didn't want to wait. Add sites like videobox that allow you to download and keep tons of content from most studios and you have even less reason to visit tubes sites.
The way I look at it is that people that visit tubes sites regularly do so for only one reason...They don't want to pay for porn. Of course these geniuses are the first to complain about the lack of new porn and the downfall in quality. You didn't pay for it and you want to complain. Fuck Me.

Frankly, I think modern gonzo has about the shelf life of yellow bananas. Almost nobody is looking to spend money on a standard gonzo flick that was made more than a month ago. To a lot of people, porn is all about the latest release with the newest girls. For most of it, if it doesn't sell in three weeks, most people aren't going to buy it anyway unless they recycle it and put it on a web site or a comp disc. And anyone who's paying attention is going to know it's recycled content. Porn is like food. If it ain't fresh, people turn their noses up at it.

No. The sale of a 30 year old production contributes to the financing of their new productions, just the same as the sale of their brand new release contributes to the financing of their new productions.

I'll still watch "old" gonzo movies. There are quite a few scenes from girls like Taylor Rain or Kat, etc. that I've never seen. Of course, I tend to rent a lot more than I buy.
But for the main topic: watching whole scenes for free is bad, mmmkay.

why haven't the studios sued the tubesites out of existence, then?

So a little is okay, but not a lot? I don't understand the reasoning there.
Is it allright to steal $5, but $100 is wrong?
A little insurance fraud is justifiable, but to torch the car and file a claim is crime?
I think a person draws the line or they don't.

I like vintage porn and edit has a whole category of it.
[mod edit: you have been warned on several occasions here on the forums not to mention that site again, and you have also been emailed about it. At some point you won't be getting warnings anymore, just a deactivation.]
