have a question about the porn industry. How come it is basically the only media industry that is not consolidated? In film, TV, and music all the companies are consolidated with each stusio being a subsidiary of a parent company. Porn isn't like this a lot of independant private companies. The producers would flex much more power if it was consolidated also could control the flood of content which makes the market saturated.
Would like to hear from some insiders on this. Thanks.

It's more consolidated than a lot of people think. :)

dosn't seem that way. Also do production houses handle their own distribution or are they simply the wholesalers with a third party dealing directly with online and traditional retailers? Thanks.

Most of the big production houses handle their own sales in-house.
I'm not going to give specific info that some people don't want out there, but there ARE some companies owned by the owner or VP of another company, there are sister companies that share sales teams.

Still, unconsolidated industry compared to mainstream media, though that probably makes since given the nature of XXX.

Low barriers to entry - that's the main factor driving the proliferation of gonzo companies out there today. It doesn't take millions of dollars to start up one of these companies. Plus, the fact that the industry is largely concentrated in porn valley means you have the whole infrastructure right there, with the skilled supporting workforce (i.e. camera operators, still photographers, editors, computer geeks, makeup artists, sales and marketing people, etc.) and the network of agents and agencies to supply talent. And, of course, the size of the industry now means that there's lots of work for girls that are interested, which means there are always lots of girls interested.
Acquisitions, where one company buys another, are one type of consolidation that you see in a lot of industries. It doesn't surprise me that this doesn't happen very often in the porn business because I don't think most of these companies have much enduring value.
What I fail to understand is why more gonzo companies aren't going out of business. That's a type of consolidation that, given the increased competition, I would expect to see more of. It just seems like the pie is getting sliced awfully thin these days. I doubt many people are getting rich.
In the next several years I think theres going to be a large push towards even greater consolidation. The recent sales downturn is going to result in economic pressure to merge or to sell outright to larger companies.
I think for the most part porn with go back to its beginnings with perhaps 12 companies that are in the DVD production game. I dont think the market can support so much competition.
Even top notch companies are selling product for $2 wholesale. How long can that last ?

And in which genre would it be categorised S&M? With "Fried Rice" in the "Bush" it would truly rock even if it required subtitles to figure out the fine text.If Bill & Monica cud do it so effectively in the WH then the Texas oil rigs cud be a fine off-shore location for this docu-drama.OBL wud love to be the sole overseas distributor for this one across Asia & the Gulf regions.A sure shot superhit...Advance sales wud guarantee that!!!
I was told by the store owner that he was buying "name brand" company titles from a "well known" distributor for $2 to $4 a piece. He had no reason to lie and I was speaking to him as a lawyer.
The pricing I personally witnessed on these titles were $12.99 some were even $9.99.
Also, he was a small store with only 1 location. So we arent talking big order discounts.

Like Tricia said it is consolidated. Many of the newish companies aren't new at all. They're just new names, new divisions of existing companies. Unlike other media companies, porn companies are not public. So the consumer would have no way of knowing who owns what.
It's the giants who are flooding the market with their own product, competing against themselves. There are few unique heavily marketed movies. Mostly it's brand marketing - selling as many units as possible within the brand. Then start a new brand so you have a new brand to market.

Yea - at Evil Angel we even have the Buttman Magazine line. Different sales team for domestic, same sales team for cable and foreign. DVD Production is shared between the 2 companies. Shipping depts. are separate but do work together in concept. Same central website - www.evilangel.com.
We didn't consolidate that company into us and absorb it, it was us expanding and doing something different. Until then, we had never taken on a non-established director as a contract director. (Actually, I take that back, we did once... and that didn't work out, so we didn't do it again at Evil Angel.) We had Tristan Taormino, but that was for 2 individual projects, not a directing contract. There were the comic book movies, but again, those were individual projects, not a contract director.
Anyway, there were a few people we wanted to give a try, like Jazz Duro and HJ (Nevaquit), but we just couldn't risk the Evil Angel reputation or charge Evil Angel prices. So we started the Buttman Magazine line (which also of course has a tendency to be ass-centric) and it's proven to be a great training ground for these new guys. And the extra bonus is that we get to sell it a couple of dollars cheaper to the end consumer since it's not as established as our main roster of directors.
So that's a LONG explanation of why a company might start a sister company. We were pretty obvious with ours, but there are other companies who started a more anonymous offbranch company that is harder-edged than their first or maybe ethnic-centered, or maybe feature-oriented, or stuff like that.
select catalog titles from PHE, LFP and VIVID are available in that price range from time to time.
the only other 3 possibilites are:
1) the distributor received product in lieu of cash and is trying to convert the product into cash.
2) the "distributor" is actually a producer who has sold some of their catalog titles to another producer, and now the "distributor" is looking to move remaining product dirt cheap.
3) the distributor is selling bootlegged/pirated product.

RLD and PXP stuff sometime falls off a cliff in price. I've gotten their DVDs brand new at times for under $5.00 on AdultDVDMarketPlace.com. It isn't hard for me to believe that some distributors make bad bets and get stuck with too much product that they have to move dirt cheap.
Would the exception-that-proves-the-rule be Liberty Media? Granted, they aren't in the Fortune 500 (I don't think) and they don't trumpet their "hotel-room-porn" biz, but there you are.
While there have been attempts by some anti-porn groups to 'punish' hotel chains that provide adult movie fare, so far the general public hasn't equated such a service with being a porn company.

has anyone noticed hotels outside the US like in MX and the caribean have harder sex on hotel PPV. Like I saw Seven the Hard Way in Cancun Marriott, I don't think US Marriotts show that hard of stuff.
