Hi folks, I have been reading ALOT of reviews on movies lately and wanted to hear what poeple think about Patrick Riley. The reason for such is that at the end of his reviews he has the same statement and it is this : If u want the the truth read my reviews, if u want advertising read the others".Now ,i might be off in one word but that is the jist of it.

I can tell you that industry reviews more often are off the mark, or in other words, I do not agree with them. I found member reviews by the general public at adult websites to be far more accurate. A sentence or two is all I need to get the jist whether a movie is hot or whether it sucks.
Just because someone can write a long critique doesn't make them accurate.

People from torrents would be fair critics, they don't have to sell or promote.

A way to steal intellectual property not condoned here
Right, they are much more busy stealing not only they don't have to sell they also won't buy.

Riley's signature was written at a time when AVN reviews dominated. There are a lot more independent fan reviewers and review sites now. It's a different landscape. Just on ADT we have more than 25,000 independent reviews written by fans who have no reason to "advertise" product.

^ Steph is absolutely correct.
However, let me also add that Riley also tended to be a bit harsh.
Telling the "truth" doesn't give license to be nasty.

I was thinking about that advertising part and your input showed me that people give decent reviews that do not profit from such. Alot of people as u said and decent people allowing us to know about the movies. Thank u for your input. Have a good weekend.

I doubt it. Among the people on torrent sites are just as many nutcases as on regular porn forums, probably even more

Is this the same Patrick Riley as co-edited and then took over the Robert Rimmer X-Rated Vid Guides?

Copying intellectual property is not stealing and never has been. It's been promoted by the music and film production companies in this way. In fact the music industry is so inefficient that it needs copyright protection to prop it up. If you download music or movies illegally your simply not providing the owner of the copyright their monopoly profit. This is the widely accepted view by academics. Although you could say its unethical and morally wrong in most cases.

Riley is a terrible critic. Rimmer was a much better writer and had broader and more interesting ideas about pornography.

Well I wish you to write the most successful movie in History and getting ZERO money from your monopolized intellectual property because everybody copies it without paying
Is that fair enough?

Ok, so it's the same guy. I agree. I do not like his approach to reviews.

Makes me think, was Jim Holiday the first adult film critic? He was the first I ever heard of.

Holiday, from the little I've read, seemed pretty good. I'd like to get a hold of his book. I think the first critic of film pornography was probably Al Goldstein in Screw magazine. Playboy and even Variety also wrote very early about pornographic films.

I've never read Screw but Playboy printed Goldstein's tribute to John Holmes upon his death. Al also made the talk show rounds, maybe on Tom Snyder?
Off the top of my head, I don't remember reading any specific xxx reviews in Variety except for the review of the x-rated In the Realm of the Senses that I read in the magazine room of my high school. I also remember reading about Harry Reems being on trial around that time---tb

^ I have read porn reviews that are from Variety, though I can't remember what year, and Roger Ebert reviewed the Alice in Wonderland XXX Musical in 1976, yet this is presumably the "soft" version that went to mainstream theaters. (Ebert liked it, too).

My impression from the few of Riley's reviews that I have read is that they are pretty much useless to me -- not because of the quality of the reviews (no comment) but because his tastes seem so divergent from mine. His expressed opinions seemed to have little bearing on whether or not I would like the movie.
