Everyone let's this thought cross their mind. I'm sure most of the contributors here think about it more often. Besides the money you'd need a car, camera, lights, a decent computer, viagra and someone already in the biz to get you in to lead you to the smart people who are going to want a cut if your concept is successful.
Would 40K handle it for 18 months?

If u have a hot attractive girl like Riley Steele, Jessica Drake or that Atlanta cheerleader, u can start with zero money. My advice to u will be to first come up with a hot chick like those and everything else will come on its own.

I figure there is some legal stuff to take care of first before you get a naked chick in front of a camera. That's gonna be some $$$. I thought pornlaw wrote out something once but I couldn't find it. There are a couple of threads.... here and here.

I'm not sure if you're talking about dvd or internet, but I wouldn't touch dvd. There's next to no chance of you selling enough copies to make your money back. It won't happen... at least not in the first 3 releases... and with advertising/getting screwed over by distributors/other fees... forget it.
40k for an internet site is more than enough. Trust me. I've lived off my own porn sites and promoting others for over 15 years now. However... times are WAY different today than they were. It's harder to make money today.
Long story short, 40k is more than enough for an internet site. Depending on talent, you can get them for as little as $250 up to $1000. I'm talking everything from craigslist hookers to A-B level porn star talent.
However, aside from a decent camera, a decent computer and various web hosting fees... the biggest obstacle you're going to have to hurdle is getting to your site and then getting them to actually join it.
I don't like to crush anyone's dreams, but if I were you (or anyone else) I wouldn't even consider investing in porn at this point. Everything has been done a million times and unless you're good at marketing (or know someone who is) then you will bleed that money faster that you can imagine.
Don't let anyone fool you. You don't need A list talent with big budgets to make money. You can film toothless skanks for $50, but if you have a cool gimmick and the site is sticky then people will shell out money. The sizzle sells the steak.
