On the very best discs I own, there is maybe 2 to 3 minutes of footage I consider strokeable.
I buy or rent porn in hopes of seeing a favorite star in one-on-one B/G sex. But even on discs supposedly featuring my favorite, I always get several other stars that I may not care for, way too many close-ups, group/circus sex, and carpet-munching--most of which is unadvertised.
So I ask those of you knowledgeable in the industry: Will it ever be economically practical for producers to offer discs with, say, one designated female starring--while eliminating types of sex a buyer has no interest in?
I would pay a premium price for a disk with, say, only Katsumi doing B/G (with maybe some B/G/G) emphasizing BJs and doggie, e.g., with a minimum of close-up shots.
So tell me, when it comes to a la carte porn, am I only dreaming?

it already exists with vod - buying minutes or portions of movies. so there's no reason it won't exist in other formats someday. porn is already breaking things down into specific wants - eg white teenage girls who eat black cum. it probably won't get as specific as to what kinds of camera shots (eg no closeups) but definitely star and major sex acts.
I would love to see that type of product. It could be like a porn version of iTunes. Instead of buying the whole album, you can just pick and choose your songs. They could have complete DVD's available for download, and you could see a little preview and then pay for the scenes you want. Then you can burn them onto your own compilation discs.
It has worked for the recording industry. Why couldn't it work for porn? And I don't mean subscription pay sites online-specific content. I'm saying that one could download only the sex scenes from "Pirates."

I've seen this idea tossed around a few times in my years of reading this forum. I think it is a great idea, but many porn producers have been hesitant to embrace VOD and other formats. I think they are now slowly starting to realize the potential.
If history is any indication.....the rampant spread of MP3's led to things like iTunes or buying music by the track. The massive distribution of illegally copied porn on the net, with Usenet forums broken down by specialization/genre (alt.binaries.multimedia.erotica.teenfem.anal) now posting entire DVD's literally on the day of their release, pre-broken down by scene, will lead to buying custom compilations of porn. You are already seeing it on some of the VOD sources like HotMovies.
Porn will adapt, I'm sure. It's already done so many times. Let's hope they are smarter than the RIAA about how to do so. The proliferation of porn websites that specialize in a particular fetish or model are already proof that it's happening.
with this kind of custom job, they'd be shooting the scenes (or re-editing previous scenes) solely for you. you'd be shelling out big bucks and I doubt it would be feasible for you.
As for companies creating custom comps of picked scenes (without re-editing them), I see that happening but not anytime soon. I don't think producers have much incentive to mess with their formulas yet. If they make hack jobs of all their movies by offering custom comps they'll probably end up losing revenue.
Damn! I need to go back to Smut University, I dropped out too soon!

Well VOD is really cool, recently i have been paying a package of 200 minutes on hotmovies for 20 bucks, been able to see so much scene i wanted to see, yeah not all the movie, yet not all the scene, but the part i was interest in(mostly BJ and Facial) and i could have a eye of a lot of movies so if i decide to buy them i would not be disapointed. Sure with this kind of rental there no way of keeping the movie, but still you can see a lot of stuff.
So yeah VOD is definately a great idea, and i will probably use it again in the futur when i have a few bucks to spare.

I've long advocated selling scenes. Some people like a specific act, but it may be too obscure for an entire movie let alone a series. Guys who like that sort of thing can download only those scenes, if effect create their own DVDs.
Some guys want to compile all the scenes of a certain girl. It could become a dream come true.
But you have to be able to download the scene and burn it onto disk. Most of this VOD is limited in this sense.

Thanks to all for the input.
As to VOD, I don't care for viewing porn on my PC monitor--and have no DVD burner--so, for now at least, it's not much of an option.
I guess I am visualizing the day that a buyer could pick and choose from a menu certain scenes (even perhaps picking parts of certain scenes) from a database of individual stars' performances, having that content then zapped onto a disk and shipped.
It seems somewhat practical, were it offered from a company possessing a large library, but I'm ignorant of all the technical considerations.
All I know is that, no matter how carefully I choose DVDs currently on the market, I end up enjoying at most maybe 10% of the content, and therefore would accordingly pay more for a custom disk.

Well whats the mather about seeing porn on a pc monitor...it can seem weird but personally i have been enjoying watching that a lot more on my PC than on my TV, i manage to get scene download, i can`t say more you probably figure why, and its a lot better, first because you click on the file and pop, it open. I have buy a vivid dvd recently, a compil of lexie marie(i just love her look) and so i put the dvd into my xbox(who is my dvd player at the same time) and i wait...i wait...i wait, damn the advertising never stopped...i was like MAN CAN I SEE THE FUCKING MOVIE??? even when passing them at the fastest possible. Then when the movie finally come out after 2 min of that...it block. AAAAAAAHHHHHH !! have to restart the whole thing, and you know what? happen again.... So i decide to try my PS2 since it was not working in the xbox, but my ps2 is only my second option for viewing movie that don`t pass on xbox, i have no remote etc , and on a ps2 it fastforward only at the lowest speed...so imagine the time it took to finally see the movie.
So yeah i prefer to see porn on my cpu...
About downloading scene, yes thats a thing annoying with VOD, its the probleme, you can download a whole movie but its still around 6 bucks, more expensive than video club but its only 48 hour...no way of keeping it i supose, maybe there a way but lets say it would not be suposed...rental for a week cost like 7-8$, sometimes you can get a dvd for that price on ebay etc...so ...
I supose paying at the scene but being able to keep it would be the best, a movie cost what, lets say 25$ when its new. there normally 5 scene...how about 5$ a scene for the recent ones, 3$ for the oldest...would be fair...
I make all my own stroke-comps however and whenever I want.
In the long run, owning the DVDs is cheaper, AND you're getting the best quality available. Unless companies start making full DVD-quality uncompressed video available (i.e. the exact same material that is on the DVD), I have zero interest in purchasing it.
Of course, I know a 1 GB file would take forever to download, but this is what I want. Also, price it fairly and don't tie my hands with how I can use it. I expect to be able to retain the file forever, move it to any one of my computers at my discretion and burn it onto media -- as many times and ways I choose to.
If a typical five-to-six-scene DVD can be purchased for "$20," $5-$6/per scene would be appropriate.
Way too cheap you say? No way.
If we assume adding a "20% premium" to a "$20" DVD for the privilege of buying scene a la carte, you wind up with $24. That's $4/per scene for a six-scene DVD, and $4.80/per scene for a five-scene DVD. OK, so charge me $6/per scene and I'm a happy stroker.
Anything more than $8/per scene and I'm not interested. If you double the "$20" DVD to $40 and divide it by five scenes, that's $8/per scene. Anything more than that, and you're just not serious about marketing a la carte scenes to me (and I suspect many others).
A one-gigabyte file on a good cable-modem connection can be downloaded in under an hour these days. A full-length DVD with good DiVx compression is about 750 megabytes and can also be downloaded in less than hour. If you buy one of the newer inexpensive DVD players, some have DIVX decoding built in...my Philips DVD player does and it cost me $59 at the local discount department store. My portable DVD player, also from Philips, has DIVX decoding as well. I can carry 4-5 full-length movies on one DVD and play it on the portable, I do this all the time with my kids' video's so they don't screw up the originals.
The industry will adapt to serve the types of requests the OP is talking about. They may say they "never" will, but less than a decade ago, the record labels were actively blocking the development of buying music-by-the-track. Now look at iTunes. It'll happen, it may not be cheap when it first does, but over time any industry realizes that the power isn't held by the content distributors, it's held by the content purchasers. What you are willing to pay for is what will sell. If the demand for porn-by-the-scene doesn't manifest, then you'll not see it. If demand is there, you'll see it. You already have this on speciality websites that cater to a particular model or fetish.
Part of the problem with normal "marketplace" factors leading the way to a la carte porn, is that men are thinking with their dicks and making impulse decisions based on what is out there.
It will take a porn visionary to make a leap-of-faith and offer the type of a la carte purchasing option I am talking about. My feeling is that this will increase the total bottom-line and not impact the sales of DVDs to any serious degree. Why, you ask? Because I, and many other fans, will be willing to purchase a scene with a favorite actress from DVDs that, otherwise, I just will not purchase. When the DVD has material of the type I like, I'm still going to buy it as my first choice.
I'm just NOT going to shell out $20-$30/per month/per website to stream internet-quality video. Neither am I going to spend $6-$12 for temporary VOD downloads.
Maybe porn studios will be shocked to learn what it is porn fans really want when they see what we choose to purchase as individual scenes. I am a one-on-one-boy/girl-lots-of-vaginal-sex-BJ-facial-cumshot fan. I am forced to buy/rent material that really doesn't appeal to me in order to continue watching newer porn. But guess what, I am now buying a whole lot less, and being a whole lot more selective in what I rent. In other words, a life-long heavy porn consumer who owns hundreds of purchased DVDs (and VHS) who is now decreasing his purchases because the industry is incapable of providing me with what I want. What's wrong with this picture?

I agree with BigBobxxx's basic idea but don't agree with the economics. I think it can be offered a lot cheaper because there's no replication costs or artwork. Server space is much cheaper. I think the only thing holding things back, and keeping the DRM models in place, is the fear that these files will be traded freely on P2P networks. I don't think it takes a visionary to realize that this would be a very popular service, but it has to be cost effective enough to allow for both profit and as a discouragement to steal. There has to be a sweet spot there. The music industry found that spot, but they're still fighting to raise the prices. They'll never learn.
Well, you're right about the "fear" thing. However...
Peer-to-peer networks are going to continue stealing and trading "internet-sized" files no matter what the industry does. This can not and will not ever be stopped.
However, I think there is zero percent chance that the illegal trading of 1 GB uncompressed files will ever become a problem. If there was a demand for it, it would already be happening right now.
The real issue, as I see it, is selling DVDs AND selling a la carte scenes for a reasonable price -- as opposed to people renting DVDs long enough to make illegal copies (where zero revenue is realized by the porn studios).
Have I ever made an illegal copy of something? Of course.* So have 99.99% of all you reading this. More importantly, do I want to? The answer is -- emphatically -- no! I would much rather purchase ALL my porn.
Believe it or not, I have NEVER downloaded, uploaded or traded an illegal (or legal) porn scene or movie via a peer-to-peer network or otherwise. I have zero interest in inferior-quality porn. That, and you have to be insane to expose your computer (especially if it's a PC) to the pinheads on the Internet in this fashion.
* I do not condone illegal copying of copyrighted material. I have rationalized my occasional transgressions due to the incredible number of DVDs and VHS videos I have purchased (hundreds... 300+); the many titles I have purchased twice (first as VHS, then as DVD); the many titles I purchased legally that I'm sure, in retrospect, were organized boot-legged copies I got stuck with; and the large number of defective, misleading and poor-quality products I have purchased and been stuck with -- remember the VHS era -- by the industry over the years.
Don't be so quick to judge... For example, do I have any problem with making a copy of a movie I ALREADY PURCHASED on VHS -- and got a "brand-new" "factory-sealed" tape that never tracked properly and was garbled from the moment I first played it -- and had no practical recourse for because stroke shops never accepted returns or exchanges -- now that I can rent a DVD and rectify the wrong? What do you think?
Please, let's not derail this topic with a self-righteous fight about copying. I ONLY raised this point because it is critically related to an honest discussion of the issues we are discussing. So, mods, please let this one slide as long as we stay on track here

I was making a general statement regarding the views from within the industry, not making a self righteous attack. I'm far from innocent myself. It's true that P2P isn't going away, but I think there are a lot of people who would sooner pay for something they can count on the quality of, and feel cleaner for it. I think it will open a new revenue stream for the industry and only impact negatively on the shoddier products that, like music CD's today, pack themselves with filler.
You didn't make an attack You and I seem to be agreeing with each other. I was merely asking everybody, especially the mods, not to let my comments derail the thread and/or lock it down.
No problem here mate, as long as people get the topic back onto the bits about selling individual scenes and off of what you or anyone else may or may not have copied at one time and why.
I can't ever see it happening in that form. There's just too much fucking around for them to bother with when they can just let you download the files yourself, then leave it to you to sort out the business of burning the DVD yourself, dvd cases, etc.
DVD burners are cheap nowadays anyway. If (or when) what Bob is suggesting comes to pass, they'll be even cheaper and once you've made your comp-of-choice, you can watch it on your TV.

If scenes are ever offered the way it's being envisioned here, I guarantee that people will jump in with services for the technophobes. People buy digital cameras and can't figure out how to dump their memory cards onto the computer. They'd rather buy more memory than learn how to properly use what they have. There's money being made at convenience store kiosks for people to burn CD's that they have the facilities at home to take care of. Offer the DVD ready files and they will come.

Thanks, Scipio, your points are well-taken. I am neither a techno-phobe or -geek, but I agree with Picman's take on the matter.
It may very well be impractical to offer what I am seeking in this thread, but if and when someone figures out how to profitably offer the custom-content DVD, I will be ready to pay for that convenience.

mod note: post removed - AdultDVDTalk does not condone piracy or advocating piracy, no matter how many words you dress it up in.
I recall years ago, when "The Wherehouse" presented an option through in-store consoles, on which you could preview various tunes, to make selections from, to then create a custom cassette from.
I don't expect that to happen anytime soon in smutshops, however there's one I frequent, that for years has offered the option of previewing (for a nominal price), any rental in the store in a semi-private booth, designed not to indulge in, but merely browse the content prior to purchase.
I haven't used it much, but it nevertheless has long been a lucrative option for this store.
In general, I've found the various scenes that makeup most gonzos, have been a world apart, from the music "fillers" found stuffed alongside most sought after singles I've purchased. The preview pics themselves, most often give a fair estimate of who's inside, performing what.
