you are not strictly accurate with your post.

If your picture quality on vhs deteriorates after only a

few plays something is very wrong with either your tapes or

your head is dirty/worn out.

it takes years for vhs tapes to deteriorate significantly

to be noticeable.

I have had over 80 vhs porn tapes for years and they are

all fine still.

I find a lot of porn way too long and like to edit onto tape

the length of the scene and cut out any boring bits.

dvdr is too expensive still and IMHO way too delicate, just

look at normal cds one bad scratch or just lots of handling

and the cd jumps and is ruined, many high level dvd players

are very sensitive and easily pick up any imperfections in

the disc, its not a perfect replacement for vhs yet.

just some observations I would like to make.

Hi. Yeah, perhaps I was wrong saying VHS deteriorates after a few plays. I suppose what I meant is the likelyhood of the tape being jammed, or sometimes you get those thin white streaks flashing across the screen. When I first got dvd, I never wanted to return to VHS. Although, having said that, VHS was good in its day!

I'm not just referring to porn dvd's. Take Lord of the Rings for example, I don't understand people who bought that on VHS. The simple answer would be because they don't own a DVD player - but to be honest you can pick up a player so cheap nowdays.

but none of you acknowledges the fact that they are so damn delicate, drop it onto a carpet face down and unless your very gentle cleaning it your in trouble, and the better and more expensive your dvd player is the more sensitive it is.

I really can'not see the long term storage capability unless you never play them.

look at the original philips cd's which were silver they are deteriorating and turning gold, cd's have proven to be nowhere near as tough as the hype originally promised

and a lot of porn studios dvd product sucks big time
no where near the budgets or technical no how of the big hollywood studios, with the exception of evil angel
which are way too expensive at the moment for me to afford.

yeah i know high class product costs money,

us poor so and so's in the u.k. until very recently were getting ripped off bigtime, we have a lot of catching up to do with our american/canadian/european friends.

I fully agree that most avid viewers are switching to DVD formats. However, the last statistic I read on households with DVD players was still less than 2/3 of them had DVD players. Another statistic from a survey stated only 24% of those that purchased mainstream DVDs did so for the "extras" and that the vast majority had started purchasing DVDs b/c of trends towards that format.

Also keep in mind that while cheaper to replicate than VHS, DVDs may actually cost more once additional production costs (director interviews, behind-the-scenes, etc). Of course, those costs are ammortized into the cost of the DVD and will vary depend on units sold.

So, bottom line, folks are still buying porn the old fashioned way, on VHS. And I believe they will for at least another 2 years. I still stand by my original prediction made 2.5 years ago that VHS will be gone in 2005.

I have a VHS player, but I only use it when I want to view a new series that I am not familiar with and want to check it out - and then I just rent the tape from my local store.

When I buy, it is always DVD.

Planet Sex (when he was posting) gave a definition for DVD.

I have rented VHS a number of times when there was no other choice.

I now own three set-top DVD players (one a 300-disc changer, one a top-of-the-line sindle-disc player and one an inexpensive single-disc player which can handle multi-region & various broadcast formats - my Sampo DVE-631CF).

I also have DVD playing capabilities on two different computers.

I've given away two of my three VHS recorders. I do have a pair of ReplayTV 3120 digital video recorders (MUCH superior to the TiVo variety).

They purcase new releases in a 60% VHS and 40% DVD mix.

Part of the problem is that only a few companies release
on VHS and DVD at the same time.

And, no matter the media, the customer wants New Releases!

My preference is 100% DVD!

anyways, we at DVSX are putting a lot of effort into our dvd's. they're packed to capacity with special features and relevant content, and every release is simultaneous vhs & dvd. i hope many of you get to check out our stuff, cuz i'd love to hear some feedback.

why? my choice has little or nothing to do with picture quality or longetivity. for me DVD is all about convenience. i'm surprised no one in this thread has yet mentioned the size factor, for one. no doubt many of us are compiling quite the collection of porn. i'm scared to imagine how large mine would be if it were all in bulky VHS format along with those huge boxes. i also watch alot on my computer or occasionally on my laptop when i'm on the road. no can do with VHS. sure, if youre travelling you can bring along a few tapes to pop in a hotel room VCR. but compare that to the 30 or so DVDs you can carry around in a textbook sized caselogic binder. granted, you will probably need your own player. and with DVD, forget about fastforward or rewind. this aspect of DVD, perhaps above all others, is imho most ideally suited to porn since there's little point in watching an old tape through from start to finish (as opposed to watching a mainstream movie).

For me, if it comes out on VHS first, if I need to see it that badly, I'll rent it, then buy the DVD later.
I don't have Tivo. Don't really intend to get it. I do still tape stuff on my VCR. Will replace it with a DVD-R settop as soon as they drop below $500.

I also still have alot of my old VHS that just aren't worth replacing on DVD. (Travel tapes of places I've been, aerobics tapes...)

But constance le said all of what I would like to say...

the simple chapter selection alone is probably the single most useful function of all in raincoating, besides all that other technical mumbo jumbo. and now with all the special features that a lot of companies are working into their dvd's, watching porn is more enjoyable than ever, and you feel more like you're getting your 25 bucks-worth. another great thing about dvd's is that they're so much easier to hide/store.

-Chapters are great, no, or little, fast fowarding required always a plus.

-Storage is a whole lot easier, for sure, I have three binders... one for Evil Angel and Red Light District and a few other worthy titles/studios. One for Elegant Angel, Digital Sin, Wicked and various others that I consider to be worthy, just not as worthy for the number one binder. The third binder is for miscellaneous titles, or those that I don't watch often or will never watch again. (I hope to view and hopefully put DVSX in one of the first two binders :).

I couldn't imagine what I'd do if I had to put 253 (current count) VHS into storage.
