I know I'm not. Aside from the picture deteriorating after a few plays, you don't get the extras as you do on dvd.
Having said, there are a load of quality movies which haven't been transferred to dvd yet.

Hi,
I doubt that every movie wil be available on dvd sooner or later and that´s too bad. I wish there would be more companies like Evil Angel who do a simultanious release.

hi

you are not strictly accurate with your post.

If your picture quality on vhs deteriorates after only a

few plays something is very wrong with either your tapes or

your head is dirty/worn out.

it takes years for vhs tapes to deteriorate significantly

to be noticeable.

I have had over 80 vhs porn tapes for years and they are

all fine still.

I find a lot of porn way too long and like to edit onto tape

the length of the scene and cut out any boring bits.

dvdr is too expensive still and IMHO way too delicate, just

look at normal cds one bad scratch or just lots of handling

and the cd jumps and is ruined, many high level dvd players

are very sensitive and easily pick up any imperfections in

the disc, its not a perfect replacement for vhs yet.

just some observations I would like to make.

Hi. Yeah, I think you're right. Alas, not every movie will go dvd. Some of the stuff from the 1980s was great.

@Whitestar
Hi. Yeah, perhaps I was wrong saying VHS deteriorates after a few plays. I suppose what I meant is the likelyhood of the tape being jammed, or sometimes you get those thin white streaks flashing across the screen. When I first got dvd, I never wanted to return to VHS. Although, having said that, VHS was good in its day!

No way! Dvd's rock! I've only had my player since the start of this year and its my favourite toy! i don't even contemplate VHS anymore.

I'm not just referring to porn dvd's. Take Lord of the Rings for example, I don't understand people who bought that on VHS. The simple answer would be because they don't own a DVD player - but to be honest you can pick up a player so cheap nowdays.

Well I always used to get everything on VHS and I didn't even consider a dvd player. Then I got the Playstation 2 and I was immediately convereted and I went and bought a dvd player. By far the best thing since sliced bred, and it pisses all over vhs.

Yes I still have to buy videos, because not all releases come out on DVD quickly enough, if at all. Also, the stores that I shop for my dvds organize the older or smaller labels so badly that I often cannot find the dvd titles. The videos tend to be better organized and I can usually find the releases. Buying videos saves me from having to mail order and wait, and it can also be cheaper. I rarely mail order videos and have not yet had to mail order dvds because I can find most titles in the stores if the titles are recent enough.

@Snowden porn -
Yeah, I buy conventional dvds as well as porn. For example, I'm a great horror fan and recently I acquired THE ENTIRE The Hammer House of Horror TV series on dvd (13 episodes). It's available on VHS but it's overpriced and they can only fit two episodes on one tape. The picture is crap too.
DVD rules, although Ronk makes a good point!

If it's not available on DVD, I won't buy it. The Porn industry has been pushing the DVD format, from it's inception, down our throats. Sometimes they either make us wait forever to release our favorite titles on DVD or they won't put it on DVD at all. Fuck em'!!

I agree with all of your comments.
dvd is far superior th vhs in picture quality unless its
caballero/plum/sunshine, etc etc

but none of you acknowledges the fact that they are so damn delicate, drop it onto a carpet face down and unless your very gentle cleaning it your in trouble, and the better and more expensive your dvd player is the more sensitive it is.

I really can'not see the long term storage capability unless you never play them.

look at the original philips cd's which were silver they are deteriorating and turning gold, cd's have proven to be nowhere near as tough as the hype originally promised
"eat your dinner off them " indeed!!!

and a lot of porn studios dvd product sucks big time
no where near the budgets or technical no how of the big hollywood studios, with the exception of evil angel
which are way too expensive at the moment for me to afford.

yeah i know high class product costs money,

us poor so and so's in the u.k. until very recently were getting ripped off bigtime, we have a lot of catching up to do with our american/canadian/european friends.

As a mail order and internet retailer, I wish to provide these statistics for my company:

Via Mail: of the video product sales last quarter, 38% were DVDs
Via Internet: of the video product sales last quarter, 49% were DVDs

I fully agree that most avid viewers are switching to DVD formats. However, the last statistic I read on households with DVD players was still less than 2/3 of them had DVD players. Another statistic from a survey stated only 24% of those that purchased mainstream DVDs did so for the "extras" and that the vast majority had started purchasing DVDs b/c of trends towards that format.

Also keep in mind that while cheaper to replicate than VHS, DVDs may actually cost more once additional production costs (director interviews, behind-the-scenes, etc). Of course, those costs are ammortized into the cost of the DVD and will vary depend on units sold.

So, bottom line, folks are still buying porn the old fashioned way, on VHS. And I believe they will for at least another 2 years. I still stand by my original prediction made 2.5 years ago that VHS will be gone in 2005.

Absolutely not!

I have a VHS player, but I only use it when I want to view a new series that I am not familiar with and want to check it out - and then I just rent the tape from my local store.

When I buy, it is always DVD.

Planet Sex (when he was posting) gave a definition for DVD.

DVD = Die, VHS, Die. [;)

Only if I absolutely want something that isn't available on DVD. I typically rent VHS locally and buy DVD's off the net. For what it's worth, I've noticed that the local stores are devoting more space to DVD's all the time.

And you can't put VHS on an A-B loop that'll repeat that ass fucking shot again and again. And again. Neither can you slow down video to 1/16.

Since I bought my very first DVD player & disc right after DVDs were first released, I've only bought three VHS tapes. All three were something I really wanted and they were not available on DVD at that time (one still isn't).

I have rented VHS a number of times when there was no other choice.

I now own three set-top DVD players (one a 300-disc changer, one a top-of-the-line sindle-disc player and one an inexpensive single-disc player which can handle multi-region & various broadcast formats - my Sampo DVE-631CF).

I also have DVD playing capabilities on two different computers.

I've given away two of my three VHS recorders. I do have a pair of ReplayTV 3120 digital video recorders (MUCH superior to the TiVo variety).

I have seven VCRs. Too scared to give them away, in case six break down.

PS. Yes, I still use the VCRs to record TV, satellite.

Until dvd recorders 300 bucks retail, I just don't see vhs going anywhere. People record shows to watch at a later date, and not everyone is in love with Tivo, believe it or not.

I bought my first DVD player Christmas of '98 and I'll be honest; it took me awhile to warm to porn on DVD. Perhaps it was lack of selection or just that I didn't see the need of digital clarity in viewing porn but in the past year I've changed my mind in a big way and it is because of one title. Buttman's Toy Stories. Don't ask me why but it really opened my eyes. Since picking up that disc I've bought almost 200 adult DVDs. Probably should be noted that of that collection 75% are Evil Angel discs. So to answer your question, nope. It may have taken me a few years but I'm DVD exclusive. I don't buy blank VHS tapes anymore. Hell, I don't even use the VCR since I got TIVO.

Believe it or not I just bought my first VHS tape in about three years from Empire. Reason - trying to interview the girl who is in the movie and the local store didn't carry the tape. So it was either buy it or go in blind so I chose to buy the tape.

But 99.9% of the time VHS is not an option. I will wait for the DVD or not get it.

YEAH BABY YEAH!!!!!!!!!! GOTTA LOVE THAT A-B LOOP.

That's the only thing good about those damn Onkio players, they have the A-B on the remote. With Sony, you have to go through a bunch of menu options to get to it.

My VCR is collecting dust right now. I only buy DVD's now and only VHS when I have no other choice (home movies and stuff like that).

I also would like to see more companies releasing DVD's sooner, companies like JM Productions and Extreme Associates for example.

If your unlucky like me and live near a piece of crap
video store your only option is vhs if you want to rent.
But just like the rest of you guys I can't see my self
going back to vhs. The quality outshines vhs by mile but
I guess I could always rent on line but that instant
gratification of picking up a vhs vid to rent is hard to
pass up sometimes.

Dayton has 4 main stores that rent adult VHS and DVD.

They purcase new releases in a 60% VHS and 40% DVD mix.

Part of the problem is that only a few companies release
on VHS and DVD at the same time.

And, no matter the media, the customer wants New Releases!

My preference is 100% DVD!

both vhs and dvd have their pros and cons. but personally, i think dvd's and porn were a match made in heaven. the simple chapter selection alone is probably the single most useful function of all in raincoating, besides all that other technical mumbo jumbo. and now with all the special features that a lot of companies are working into their dvd's, watching porn is more enjoyable than ever, and you feel more like you're getting your 25 bucks-worth. another great thing about dvd's is that they're so much easier to hide/store. also the idea of watching a porn on your laptop, right on your lap, is fucking hot!

anyways, we at DVSX are putting a lot of effort into our dvd's. they're packed to capacity with special features and relevant content, and every release is simultaneous vhs & dvd. i hope many of you get to check out our stuff, cuz i'd love to hear some feedback.

Everything on TV that I watch has been taped, so, yeah, I buy new blank tapes every so often. I was never in love with the VHS format and have rarely bought pre-recordes tapes, the last I remember buying was a few years ago (a Survival Research Laboratories tape, as I recall). I'll still rent tapes from time to time, if no DVD is available.

i will *only ever* purchase VHS if i want to see an old video that likely will never come out on DVD. sometimes i end up waiting several months (post VHS) to see a new release. thankfully more and more producers are shortening the lag times or moving to simultaneous release.

why? my choice has little or nothing to do with picture quality or longetivity. for me DVD is all about convenience. i'm surprised no one in this thread has yet mentioned the size factor, for one. no doubt many of us are compiling quite the collection of porn. i'm scared to imagine how large mine would be if it were all in bulky VHS format along with those huge boxes. i also watch alot on my computer or occasionally on my laptop when i'm on the road. no can do with VHS. sure, if youre travelling you can bring along a few tapes to pop in a hotel room VCR. but compare that to the 30 or so DVDs you can carry around in a textbook sized caselogic binder. granted, you will probably need your own player. and with DVD, forget about fastforward or rewind. this aspect of DVD, perhaps above all others, is imho most ideally suited to porn since there's little point in watching an old tape through from start to finish (as opposed to watching a mainstream movie).

I've bought 2 vhs adult tapes in my life. They were used ones that I got from a going-out-of-business sale. I never liked the idea of purchasing something so fragile. Used to rent a lot of vhs. Have not touched a rental vhs in 2 years (since I got dvd). I have a whole lot of adult dvd's.

In fact, I think my vhs vcr is atrophied from lack of use!
If I were to use a vcr at all, I'd probably be more likely to use my old Sony SuperBeta Hifi.

Something that my daughter is only going to watch for the next year or so (sing-along tapes, etc.), I just get on VHS, because she won't let me use anything if she can't touch it too. And she's already scratched about 10 DVDs. I just have to watch to make sure she doesn't try to pull the tape strip out of the casing.

For me, if it comes out on VHS first, if I need to see it that badly, I'll rent it, then buy the DVD later.
I don't have Tivo. Don't really intend to get it. I do still tape stuff on my VCR. Will replace it with a DVD-R settop as soon as they drop below $500.

I also still have alot of my old VHS that just aren't worth replacing on DVD. (Travel tapes of places I've been, aerobics tapes...)

The last adult VHS I bought was so long ago I can't even remember. lol

But constance le said all of what I would like to say...

the simple chapter selection alone is probably the single most useful function of all in raincoating, besides all that other technical mumbo jumbo. and now with all the special features that a lot of companies are working into their dvd's, watching porn is more enjoyable than ever, and you feel more like you're getting your 25 bucks-worth. another great thing about dvd's is that they're so much easier to hide/store.

-Chapters are great, no, or little, fast fowarding required always a plus.

-Storage is a whole lot easier, for sure, I have three binders... one for Evil Angel and Red Light District and a few other worthy titles/studios. One for Elegant Angel, Digital Sin, Wicked and various others that I consider to be worthy, just not as worthy for the number one binder. The third binder is for miscellaneous titles, or those that I don't watch often or will never watch again. (I hope to view and hopefully put DVSX in one of the first two binders :).

I couldn't imagine what I'd do if I had to put 253 (current count) VHS into storage.
