Ed Powers is famous for his long-running "Dirty Débutantes" video series, which specializes in shooting brand new girls in their first porn scene. Ed himself is annoying. His videoshooting skills are terrible. IMO, were it not for his "hook" of shooting new girls, he would be a colossal failure in the porn world. It just goes to show how desperate are viewers to see fresh talent that they are willing to tolerate all the negatives and buy his stuff anyway.
I'm not an Ed fan but I discovered Aurora Snow in one of his Real Naturals feature , it was one of her very early scenes I was almost shocked she looked shy and even blushing in there but was determined and I saw a great potential , it was I believe at least ten years ago, Aurora is still performing and still doing the trick, a living legend one of the greatest ever

If there is a performer/director who had access to more fresh, attractive women I would like to know who it is. It felt like Ed Powers had a monopoly on the adult talent so many passed through him first. He also gets little praise but some of the best hardcore scenes are ones he directed but did not perform in.

well, he did make Jake Steed a porn "household' name...
Dirty Debs is the best, most 'real' porn series ever. Ed is unpleasant to look at, and the sex is boring, BUT I never fast-forwarded a single scene. You really felt you were getting genuine insight into who the girl really was. Love it.
I had a slogan I made up for Ed. "Never underestimate a perv with a camera" Anyway, some of his old stuff was just awful but then again, a lot of porn (new and old) has been just awful. You really have to judge a pornographer by his/her best work. I always liked the fact that he switched camera angles frequently. In a lot of newer porn if you don't like the angles they shoot from, you won't like any of their porn because they always use the same angles. His camera work was shaky sometimes but it was worth it for the creative angles he got. Some of the girls were really amazing. He was a bit of a strange character but most of the girls didn't seem to mind. At least he wasn't deliberately mean to them.
He has some incredible gems in a pile of hay. Some girls that went one and done unfortunately. Other stars that you see interviewed either early or more candid than usual and it is insightful. Some of his firsts or earlies are amazing. Alysin Chaynes and little Eva come to mind. I'm a fan.
In the late 80s and early 90s, he pretty much started the whole gonzo style of shooting girls, often brand new, and interviewing them beforehand. The production values were extremely low, and Ed did not improve them significantly even after he got richer and richer from his various series. He also used big name performers in those early days (Jamie Gillis, Randy West, Jake Steed, etc) But as those guys went off to start their own lines, Ed became the sole performer, which was a shame because he was a horrible one. The only reason people continued to watch his movies was because of the girls (mix of young and established stars).
I know there are a lot of Ed haters out there, but he is/was unique. He is schmaltzy on camera (is that a wrod) but loosened a lot of girls up who didn't see him or his dick threatening and got talked into at least talking in a relaxed manner and maybe having more intimate sex than they ever would again on camera. So many girls went on to be painted fake moaning actresses, but were girls next door in their one scene with Ed. Plus, if you are in the mood for big dicked ripped tough guys, there are plenty (and you're gay, kidding). Ed is a guy you can actually imagine the girls being less attracted to than me, lol.. There are a lot of surprisingly touching moments....I remember he interviewed Paige Turner and she sort of choked up talking about her boyfrined. And Riley Brooks was an interesting one, sort of denying her first go around under a different name (escapes me). Anyway, I'm a fan, and if you want something diffeent, you have 99 percent of the rest of the industry, because he is unique.

If that is the case what Jamie Gillis stated I would think the real cause is more to it than that. How can sex with mostly amateur girls ever get boring? Fresh, new girls? I highly doubt that is the true cause why Jamie Gillis left. Think about it and you will see my point. I much rather be paired with amateur girls than prolific female porn stars that Gillis encountered throughout his long career. Jamie Gillis was one of very few porn stars that could truly act, he had true acting skills. Perhaps he was bored not with the girls but the monotonous setup that Ed Powers used to no end and lack of creativity coming from Ed Powers.
Jamie definetely started with Ed because he was in most of the first videos. They also shot other movies other than the Debutante series together. It's just that Jamie had certain ideas when it came to porn that were too weird for Ed and they parted ways. jamie did shoot his own series of videos but they never took off like Ed's did.
I do remember at the time I was baffled as to why he was so successful. I didn't like his movies much at the time but looking back, there were a lot of serious cuties and his technique had just the right amount of amateurish edge to it. Still, often the picture was so awful it destroyed everything else. Sometimes it wasn't too bad. It was inconsistent. That's what kept me renting his stuff. I'd see a cutie on the cover and hope this was one of the halfway decent ones.
^I think a huge part of the problem was the choice of shooting with a tripod and/or an handcam. POV by nature is already very restricting when it comes to the available shots and lighting possibility are poor. That's why most of the ones I prefer were those when there was another person shooting rather than Ed or the tripod. I understand the reason why he chose the handcam and tripod was because the girls were really only comfortable shooting with him and nobody else in the room. He was afterall the first and often only guy they had on camer sex with. I think we might have a different opinion in regards to the qualiuty of the video if Ed had access to todays camera.
Anybody wanting to see what you are talking about, check out Jamie's Private Tapes. I only ever saw two tapes, don't know if he made others, but there was plenty of weird stuff in them. One scene involved Jamie smearing a hamburger on a girl in the bathtub. Another scene involved a tranny. Ugh. There were a couple of good scenes though. In one he spent the day with Porsche Lynn, including a brief clip of her working the jack booths at a local bookstore, then back to the hotel room. In another scenes he picked up girls at restaurants or whatnot and had them tease him while he filmed them and jerked off. You could tell they were not pros too. That was part of the appeal of these scenes.
An old creepy guy having sex with hot young girls. It's perverse....and it works! So much better than various 'Daddy' themed films using standard porn guys. Sorry...a guy in good shape and in his late 30's banging teens is not 'kinky'. The amateur nature meant you got to see the girls as they really are. Always interesting to look up a favourite pornstar's early scenes in Dirty Debutantes. You get to see real life. I loved the Charmane Star scene. Ed completely leches all over her. Nice and sleazy!
He was the first for true amateur porn on video..His Bus Stop series was great. He's terrible to look at...but he got true amateurs that were cute and very shy. His style doesn't work today, but he basically invented it. Genius.
^Truly fascinating article, I have quite a few Ed Powers Dirty Debutantes films and had no idea Jamie Gillis co-founded the series, really heart breaking to read how Jaime basically got ripped off on that "handshake" deal he made with Ed.
My primary interest with More Dirty Debutantes was the lesbian content, there's a ton of girl/girl scenes scattered throughout Dirty Debutantes series that are basically hidden little gems including the aforementioned first ever Aurora Snow scene.
After Ed's Cockless series ran it's course and wanting more, I discovered by way of the box art which Dirty Debutantes videos contained lesbian scenes, I know there are detractors to Ed's style but for me it's all about the models, I don't care Ed gets in the shot and talk's behind the camera, (I wish he hadn't though) Ed is literally the antichrist of lesbian porn cinematographers to the purist, but if it weren't for him we wouldn't have this amazing videolog of beautiful models in their most natural look from the 00's.
He had two scenes with a girl named Kiana who was super cute. One scene was Ed and Kiana, anal. The other scene Ed, Jake and Kiana. I've never seen her in any other porn movies. Anyone have any info on her?
Here's how to determine if a lesbian scene is in a More Dirty Debutantes movie, thumbnails on the box...
I have 90 Dirty Debutantes DVD's that have lesbian scenes, in fact it's the only reason I would have a Dirty Debutantes DVD! Here you can see the box front gives no indication of a lez scene, but the back, Ed took many photo's while filming the video, it's one of the pain in the asses of Ed's videos all the clicks and camera flashes, but I look through all that, it's like a dirty car, look past the dirt and see the fine automobile underneath.
^ LOL! Agreed. I haven't seen a top on Ed's stuff, but from what I've seen, if asked to compare it to an automobile it would be a clapped out '76 Valiant. Ed's stuff isn't without it's charms though.
I watched almost all of his New End dvds because he offered some pretty nice (ok, the shooting itself was more or less horrible) first resp. one-and-only anal scenes, e.g. Jasmin Aloha (No.7). Same with More Dirty Debutants (Isis Nile No. 28).
Let me remind everyone, I only watch Ed's lesbian content, he apparently had inside contacts to recruit many new models (and pros too) which is mentioned in the Rialto Report article above, it's the amazing models like Cherry Rain for example, in very natural (not too dolled up) appearance and amateur style filming that intrigues me so much.
Cherry Rain basically took over and ran the place, she must've done a hundred or more gg scenes for Ed, she seemed intent on producing a really great product for the company, her energy, drive and enthusiasm is why I became such a big fan of Ed Powers lesbian content.
I've actually taken the liberty to edit many scenes using my trusty video editing software to cut out the moments Ed gets in the shot, even removed brief camera flashes and audible clicks, and replaced Ed's behind the camera yapping with natural background noise, my edits made Ed's lesbian scenes much better, I very rarely see or hear Ed, its really how the Cockless series for example could've been if edited properly.
I worship the ground Ed walks on for pairing together so many great models of that era, there's nothing else like it literally, I've often dreamed of getting my hands on the master copies of Ed's lesbian films for a re-edit, then maybe more would see what I see, a beautiful 1968 VW touring bus complete with whistling little engine in the back under all that dirt!
