I am totally against government regulation (nothing could be worse), but I am all for more attention to the many issues and risks, better support for the actors and actresses, and better systems for prevention/testing (if its possible - probably is).

Sadly enough, many times in our society (and I guess human nature) it takes a great tragedy before changes or improvments (or even simple attention) to a particular matter is given. Look at 9/11... Look at the Kobe case, and the rape issue.... (both sides)

I am sincerely sorry for the people who are now suffering and I don't know what I can say, other than that as a large consumer I DO very much care about the welfare of the people involved (all of them). I hope we can bring about better changes but I am quite positive that government intervention is a disaster.

One last note - who actually is Lara Roxx? I tried to look her up on this site and Xrentdvd.com and could not find her movies..

With regards to Brazil, however, the relevant population is that of sex workers, since most porn performers come from this group (there was a recent post from Carioca who's from Brazil, stating this). In the city of Sao Paolo, the rate among sex workers of HIV infection is 18%, as measured in 1998 (from the paho.org document above) One can assume the rate is similar in Rio de Janeiro, which is only 250 miles north of Sao Paolo.

When American porn actors go to Brazil, they're not having sex with Amazonian Indians, it's with these porn performers/sex workers, and the sex is mostly non-condom, so this specific (and high) rate in Brazil is important.

It is true that the rate historically of US porn workers is low. However, because of the many sex partners that the typical porn performer will have during one month of work, an infection like HIV can spread quite far in a short time. On the AIM quarentine list, there are 50 different porn performers who are quarentined (http://www.aim-med.org/Quarantine.html), all stemming from one person (not certain yet if it was Darren James or Lara Roxx) being infected with the HIV virus. And on the list are performers from not only the US, but Canada, Belgium and the Czech Republic. So, you can see how far-reaching this can get.
