I've come across an article from Slate.com called, Vampire Porn. The author of this article talks about the decline of the adult film industry since 2008 until now, due to widespread piracy and availability of free porn.
Porn stars and porn makers aren't making much money, which discourages them from making movies.
But I've noticed from my own experience that I crave to see the most recent porn and not so much the porn made a few years ago. And it's not because the sex is better now or the porn-stars are better-looking now than before. It's because reality exists only in the present.
Past sex is less real than present sex. That's why people crave to see live sports performances, for example, rather than recorded games. And I think that it works the same way for watching porn. If porn production companies start streaming live anals, gang-bangs, and other types of sex that you normally see in porn movies, then many porn-fans would probably prefer to see this, rather than recorded porn.
The only problem is getting a large-enough audience to justify the live performance. But it's not really a problem, when you realize that millions of people surf free porn tube sites daily. Advertising live porn-shows at these websites will probably attract a very large audience of people who want to see it live between their favorite porn-stars, the way sports fans want to see live games, rather than recorded games.
Perhaps filming live porn shows is more difficult than recording movies. But it's possible to set up several cameras from different distances and angles and give viewers the choice to switch between these cameras, so that they can choose what to watch.
This would circumvent the piracy problem and perhaps make the porn-industry profitable again. And if people take screen-shots or record the show and share it with others, then this would only serve as advertisement for future live shows.
There is a big difference between watching a live show and a recorded show. A recorded show cannot compete with a live show because recorded is less real than live. This you can see with sports games, and I think it would work the same way in porn.

Live scenes are becoming more common. Both Kink and Intersec do them on a regular basis for their subscribers on at least one site, Intersec has a whole site where the draw is the monthly live BDSM shows with heavy BDSM play. Intersec has also incorporated live shows into the sites that Matt Williams directs (mainly Sexually Broken which also has a monthly live show but he also has some say with Hardtied which has also has had a couple of live shows lately). I can say this much, it is more difficult to steal a live stream if it is protected properly so non-subscribers can't watch and subscribers can't feed it to the tubes while it is live. This allows the sites to sell more subscriptions and make more money. Kink has live shows for some of their sites although only Ultimate Surrender (a traditionally run site with a monthly live match) and The Upper Floor (which is live-based) has them scheduled regularly.
A couple of vanilla companies have attempted to incorporate live shows into their company as well (Vivid in as early as 2003) without much success. I think Porno Dan has had the most success with live shows involving non-BDSM companies, he has multiple live shows every week. He keeps producing scenes at a rapid rate so he must be making at least some money with his site (it helps regarding his bottom line that performers enjoy and are drawn to his fun, lively shows so he can pay a slightly lower rate to the performers -- admittedly his scenes are also easier on their tender sexual organs so there is the trade-off). Besides, where else are you going to see extra cute porn performer Aaliyah Love suck Porno Dan's dick as if it tastes like a lollipop to her? :)

If the future is live shows than I know I will be saving a lot of money because I have no desire to see live porn. That's not to say that I haven't watched some pre-recorded live shows because I have but is a pre-recorded live show still considered a live show or just a video whose source was live.

The big attraction of a live, unedited sex show is that it's a lot more spontaneous. Because actors are imperfect. They naturally depart from their fucking script once in a while and end up improvising with each other.
And of course you can make it even more spontaneous by pairing a guy or two with a pretty lady, without any script and with only a few rules, like if it's going to be all anal, all pussy, or somewhere in between with some DPs thrown in.
A lot of unedited improvisation and spontaneity works well only in live shows and not so much in recorded films. That's why fans flock to watch live sports games, but not as many fans watch recorded games, especially when fans already know what happened.
And time factor is important too. For example, I think that a lady by the name of Seka from 1970s and early 1980s is very hot. And she had some pretty good sex with the guys too, including anals and DPs. But I haven't tried to find all of her films, and I haven't watched much of her. Because she made those movies so long ago that watching them isn't so hot for me anymore.
And that's how it is with any recorded sex-films and recorded live-sex-shows. The more time passes by, the less real their sex becomes for viewers. Old sex-shows are like old memories. And it's not natural for people to be satisfied with old sex-memories, no matter how good they are. Only sex in the present or very recent past is truly and fully satisfying for people. An this includes watching other people have sex too.
The viewer needs to know that the sex he is watching is either happening now or happened very recently and not 5, or 10, or 20 years ago.

It takes time for any live show to establish a good reputation and attract many fans. Good quality is important in any show, including a live show.
But fact is that many people go to watch live theater, live sports games, and live wrestling matches without any preview. And it can work the same way for sex-shows too, if they feature porn-studs and porn-sluts, who are popular among porn fans.
They can even make it like a competition, where a panel of expert male and female judges will judge each guy's performance with his lady and decide whether he gets to move on to the next round or not. Each round will feature new hot ladies. Which will be the incentive for guys to win the competition and get more ladies to ride.
And of course it has to be a competition between the fucking guys, rather than ladies. Because it's the guys who are normally judged on their performance, while ladies are judged on their looks and their willingness to welcome guys with open ass-cheeks.

^You wrote that live shows are spontaneous and performers are imperfect people who will depart from the script to do their own thing than by default it means that a live show can never have a good reputation and can't guarantee the quality of the final product because they themselves don't know what it will look like. They can only guarantee that they hired performer "A" and "B" to shoot a live show but the rest becomes a crap shoot. In fact they can't even be 100% sure that the performers they hired will be able to shoot their live show because anything can happen on the day the show is supposed to go on. Wasn't there some kind of incident sort of like that with a Brazzer live shoot where they had to find a replacement for a performer that was scheduled to shoot the live show?
I'd also like to point out that a live porn show is not the same thing as live theater or a sport game. The first because there is an actual script with a character synopsis and dialogue involved in theater. It's just that the viewer is watching actors play a role in real time right in front of their eyes. The second one is somewhat closer to what you described because there is no script and the performers are expected to do their own thing but only as long as they follow what their coach is telling them to do at specific time. Otherwise their ass is going to be warming a seat while the other players keep on playing. I'd also like to point out that in sports. You know that a percentage of the people watching the game are going to go home pissed because their team lost and if the game is one what is very disappointing than many of the people that should have left happy won't be.

The details you are talking about can be easily taken care of, given the will and the money.
There are many uncertainties in any live show, but this doesn't usually stop live shows from going on and succeeding most of the time.
Live music concerts is another good example where live shows succeed. And it's a good example for porn. Because music gets pirated just as much as porn, if not more so. A lot musicians nowadays make more money from live concerts than from selling their recorded music.

^No. Money and will cannot do that. All it can do is allow you some flexibility but everything I said that can go wrong in a live show can and will happen regardless that you have tons of money and amazing will power. That's why you almost no longer see live shows on TV or why movies need months before they can be released. I don't know about you but I would say that the pendulum seems to be swinging in the direction of them being rather quite disappointing these days with so many performer no longer actually singing but lip-syncing and others cancelling shows because they need to take a break.

I don't think people in the porn industry have much of a choice in this matter. They need to make live shows work, or else they aren't going to get much work.
People in the porn industry need to get paid for their work, and selling recorded porn isn't working out so well for them any more. Because new porn movies get copied almost right away and posted for people to watch for free.
This is partly happening for political reasons. Because US politicians and government bureaucrats are refusing to enforce copyright laws for porn-makers as they enforce for mainstream media. The only law some US politicians are eager to enforce for porn is censorship, rather than protection of copyright. The government is so biased against porn that porn-makers practically have no protection from the law at all.
Which means that porn-makers need to accept the fact they aren't going to get any protection from the law and find a solution to their problem, despite the lack of law. And this they can do by cooperating with each other, and creating a win-win situation for everyone within the porn industry, instead of complaining about piracy and not getting anywhere with their complaints.
Those free tube sites, that show a lot of free pirated porn, have millions of visitors every day. Which makes them a gold-mine for marketing opportunities. There isn't any other place, where porn-makers can have access to so many porn-fans at the same time. This is the place to advertise and succeed in terms of live porn-shows and any other type of porn that can't be easily copied and pirated.
In a lawless situation, it makes a lot of sense for legitimate porn-makers to cooperate with those who distribute pirated porn. All they need to do is diversify into different niches of porn, so that they end up helping each other, instead of competing against each other.

The question is how do you fuck up the porn industry that is mind boggling. A can't miss industry that never lost money is now facing bankruptcy how does that happen. And there does not seem to be any change coming in the near future companies are still putting out the same product. Live porn is probably not the answer because celebrity sells and people have actors and genres they want to see. The consumer has to put pressure on older companies to put out better product and new companies have to listen to their customers and give them what they want.

I don't agree that "LIVE!!" is so huge an appeal. For sports, much of the appeal is that the spectators have an interest the outcome; the winner/loser is important. You root for the home team or against a rival team/player or for your chosen favorite team or whatever. So whether you are listening to the radio commentators, or following the score updates on an internet site, or watching it live on TV, or actually attending the event, the appeal/excitement is in the uncertainty and the importance of the outcome. For porn, there is no such interest in the outcome. Everybody knows, with 100% certainty, that the woman will get fucked and the guy will cum somewhere on her body. For live music, the appeal is that the performers usually do some things different/unique as compared to their recorded music. Special guest musicians, different musical arrangements, extended-duration medley of fan favorites, etc. With sex, there isn't anything they can do live that they haven't done hundreds of times on videotape. Actually, the point of directing/camerawork/editing is to enhance and compensate for the shortcomings of real-time real-life sex.
I don't see how a producer could market/promote live sex in a convincing, compelling way. For me, it'd be a very difficult sell.

You take a lucrative industry and you add a player with no connection to said industry who has money and very few scruples. He starts to buy studios that are in financial trouble so that he can get their library of movies which he then makes available to tube sites that he owns. repeat the process over a few years and you now have the sate of the current porn industry in America. The only thing that no one planned was that the entire planet would go into a recession in 2008 and that accelerated the downfall of most porn studios. The few that survive today are in many ways mere shadows of their once proud selves. You still have a few putting out regular titles and a few new studios but most of the big boys that were around and making decent profits a decade ago are gone.
Today studios can't afford to put out a great product because the window to make a profit is so small that they can't afford to take a risk. that and frankly the people with actual talent behind and in front of the camera is too limited to make that a possibility.
