I watch many of my DVD's on my Toshiba laptop using Windows Media Player. Although the quality is not great i.e. ocassional pauses, jumps etc. The player is adequate for when I am travelling.
However, recently, the drive is making strange noises and is alot louder than it was before. The general quality is still the same, although I have noticed one or two more pauses than usual. My question is this,

"Can an actual DVD be damaged by a DVD player/drive?"

Should I stop playing my DVD's in the laptop?

Thanks in advance.

I think it's unlikely that the DVD reader could damage the discs but that's no guarantee - just my opinion. ~ GS

I also don't think that it could damage your disc. If your drive makes strange noise and might not spin at right/continuous speed it might have a hardware damage so that you might have to exchange it sooner or later.

I'd also be surprised if a disc could get damaged, since the laser doesn't touch the disc. Although, if the drive was badly misaligned internally then it could scratch the disc I suppose. Not sure how likely this is though.

Sounds like the drive may be unbalanced - I'd get it repaired or replaced. Your disc collection (if it's anything like mine) will be worth far more than the cost of a drive!
