Dr. Drew Pinsky thinks so, but I don't recall seeing that type of addiction in the DSM IV. I suppose we may see it in DSM V, but that isn't coming up for a couple more years yet. Dr. Drew Pinsky is the doctor involved with Sex Rehab and Celebrity Rehab on VH1, and although he is interesting to hear talk, he has a lot to learn about addiction in my opinion. Example: any doctor who truly understands addiction would not attempt a cold-turkey stoppage of opiate use when methadone is available to ease the withdrawal symptoms (although most addicts have to use methadone for life, admittedly). If methadone treatment were mandated for heroin addiction and universally available in every town, I believe the relapse rate in heroin addiction would plummet! Dr. Drew forces his celeb patients to stop all opiate drugs upon admission and you see the results on his show. Also, his treatment of Jeff Conaway was appalling! He is the last patient I would want to stop opiates as he truly needs them for pain. Jeff would be much better served in a methadone program along with breakthrough medications for pain, with medications taken at a clinic twice daily if he can't be responsible for his own medications due to addiction. Moral of the post, yes some think that there is sex addiction, but I say the jury's out. Also don't depend on celebrity doctors to shape your opinions!

A republican rag article written by a female thinks that porn is bad. Shocking, I tell you! This article says absolutely nothing new. Just the same progression based addiction theory that has no basis in reality.
Well, you know how it is. Everything's an addiction now. When you don't like something that people do and you don't have anything else to throw at them, you call them an addict. Next thing you know, people who like to sleep in are going to be called sleep addicts and people who like to breathe are going to be called oxygen fiends.

internet addiction is as real as television addiction, coffee addiction or anything else. however porn addiction as a stand-alone form of addiction is a crock. our porn is someone else"s Facebook, or Twitter or the video game. consider this study: http://med.stanford.edu/news_releases/2008/february/videobrain.html porn addiction? a right-wing fundamentalist black hole that also sucks in abortion and other "agenda builders." i don't buy these addiction arguments because they tend to come from religious fundamentalists or conservative republican perspectives and not psychiatrists or neuroscientists who use empirical methods to study something over the long term.....long term tranferrable studies that can be duplicated or tested. outside of that there is way too much chicken and egg conflation of facts for me. as someone who has watched porn for awhile, i am concerned about the impact on a partner over the long term, all of us have to consider the ill effects of that especially if we're not watching our adult stuff with our partner. here is something i found in a reputable, empirical journal if any of you are interested: The Significance of Heavy Pornography Involvement for Romantic Partners: Research and Clinical Implications Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, Volume 28, Issue 3 May 2002 , pages 193 - 206 there are plenty of studies on internet addiction and video game addiction and, unfortunately, people don't make the connection that porn is only a small part of this phenomena. not to say that there aren't people who diddle their lives away, lose jobs, spouses, homes etc. because of a "porn addiction" but my laymen's guess is that folks who are addicted to cigarettes, drinking, crack-meth-coke, heroin, gambling are much more prevalent and experience more tragic outcomes.
Where does something cross the line from simply being something you really enjoy to being an addiction? Is it if you think about it all the time? Is it if you feel you can't live withot it? Is it if you spend more than "x" amount of time doing it? I don't think so. I think something becomes an addiction when it negativly effects your life. Ie.. Keeps you from getting a decent nights sleep, or costs you your job, your house is falling apart because you would rather do your 'addiction', you become emotionally distraught, If you arnt doing it, etc. And you can spend toooo much time doing something. Spend too much time working, or sleeping, or doing your "hobby" that it throws your life out of balance, is a problem. Ie... Playing video games a couple/few hours a week, is just fine, if that's your passion. Playing video games a few hours a day.. Your life is probably out of balance. It's pretty easy to define an addiction to something physical (drugs, cigerettes, alchohol). It's fuzzier about other things, but I think the line is weither or not it's negativly effecting your life. So yes, I believe it's possible to be "addicted" to porn/sex to where it is negativly effecting ones life. However, I feel that far more people are addicted to tv/video games/social networking than are addicted to porn. I think that a lot of talk about "porn addiction" is being done by women/feminest who, more likly, have a problem of being out of touch with their own sexuality. I beleive that more often than not, a claim of someone being "addicted" to porn (usually directed at a guy) is likly being made by a partner who is out of touch with her sexuality, more than the guys porn watching negativly effecting his life. The only thing that's negativly effecting his life is having a whiney, nagging, fridged partner. I'm sorry, but if you can't watch "sex" and get turned on by it, or read an erotic story and get turned on by it, and even worse, think that it's "bad", and arnt open minded and willing to try new things, Then your personal sexuality is non existent. I almost wish there were another planet to move to so we could split the human race. The prudes could keep the earth, the rest of us could go claim another planet. Problem with that is, the new planet would have 3 billion guys on it and only a few million women, while all that would be left on earth is 2.9 billion women and a smallhandful of guys. Was actually hoping to get some women to respond to this thread, possibly one of the performers in the business. Alas, not many women visit let alone contribute.
You can be addicted to anything. The basic question you have to ask your self is: do you do "insert vice here" so much that it negatively effects your life in a drastic way? Are you spending more than you can afford? Is it ruining relationships? Do you focus on it so much it becomes a distraction at work?
The funny thing about this article is the gal doesn't even sound like she attempted to spice up their sex life. People look at porn too much as if it a line of cocaine. We as porn advocates so start making anyone who bashes our life style choices to stop having sex. If they have kids they are hipocrates. As stated in an earlier post anything can become an addiction. If some asshole goes out and eats himself to death at Wendy's should we all stop eating there and protest? By this article, yes. We should all now protest parents who neglect their children emotionally. For if the behavior is like the article stated, we should all protest people being assholes as well. For if a person is 'addicted' to a lifestyle, than that person who raises his kid strictly is 'addicted' to authority. If it makes the child feel bad than it is a bad addiction on that parents part. Porn and sobriety is a choice. It has nothing to do with an ammendment. Last time I checked I was in control of my own life weather I lived in America or New Zealand! Quite making the actions of few be responsible for the masses. For if used the wrong way a nail file can be as deadly as a knife. By these people standards it means we should all stop grooming our nails because some asshole killed someone with one! I have a right to breathe even if I am a saint or a sinner don't I!
I must admit that as I live on my own I do spend quite a bit of time on my pron collection. It fills two of my needs, looking at nice looking ladies, doing naughty things, and my hobby of collection and catolging things. This has included stamps, books, music, history etc. Am I addicted ? I do not know, but I do know that porn addiction is no where near as bad as being addicted to drugs, only took them a couple of times, booze, I like a drink, but can go for months without one, gambling, only buy a lotto ticket once or twice a year. Porn does not inspire me to rape anyone, but it does make me think about going to some naughty places where girls do things for money !
Frankly - I have a mental list of people I don't trust. Now being higher or lower on it usually isn't a thing that necessarily means much. I barely keep track of it. However - People who come out of nowhere and seem to be deeply concerned about my well being are somewhere near the top of my list of people I don't trust any farther than I could throw a cast iron bathtub. People who follow the above mentioned pattern and also state their belief that I have a mental illness or affliction or whatever it's supposed to be because of something I do for my own personal pleasure are at the very top of that list. I was addicted to porn when I was younger and healthier. Now I spend more time watching stuff with better writing, such as The Sandbaggers and Doctor Who, but a female Doctor would make an interesting show.
