Judging from the latest releases of Evasive Angles, West Coast Productions, Devil Films and Justin Slayer Productions I would have to say yes they are gong into a recession or maybe it's just a porn depression compared to releases from like 2 or even 1 year ago.

I think P2P/torrents and I the lack of quality movies. I'm glad I have a huge DVD backlog so I'm alright for a while.

We ran a feature on this in Mayfair recently.

As far as adult DVD goes, it's the same story in the UK. The sex shops report a downturn in trade, although few of them have thought about dropping their retail prices to encourage new business. The average release sells for approximately 46 dollars.

Of that 46 bucks, the producer might see $7.50-8.50 per unit. So there's no money to re-invest, either.

The big kick in the balls in the UK was the enforcement of the R18 mail order rules. Basically, if you run an adult store in the UK, you're not allowed to mail order AT ALL. It's okay if you run a business in the US and mail order it back in. But not within the UK, and they came down hard on internet retailers run out of the UK for the same reason.

I think the next few months will be interesting. Personally, in the UK I think we have too many producers and too few stars, so everyone's shooting the same girls time and time again. How many new variations can there be on a theme?!

well, i think there is no more "legal" fetishes. remember anal was a "lewd conduct" and now almost every video has an anal scene. it is not as taboo per se

Absolutely, theres going to be some major changes in the industry in the next 3 years.

Companies are getting killed financially and with the 2257 inspections why stay. Theres a glut in the market of bad product and people are going to the internet for their porn. Its just a matter of time.

I think it's an industry fact that adult VOD sales shot up in 2005 in the USA, while DVD retail took a dive. That's also true to a much lesser extent in the UK.

Why pay 45 bucks for a DVD when you can download scenes or the whole thing for a shitload less money?

If you're not bothered about missing out on the 'packaging experience' (something few producers other than Harmony bother with; their stuff is always nicely presented), then it makes a lot of sense.

The UK consumer still has a problem with online transactions, however (hardly any of them have ever heard the phrase 'chargeback', for starters), which has slowed things down.

Personally, I'd much rather have a DVD in my hand than a download. But then I'm very lazy and get my porn for free, so there may be an issue there!

It will certainly put a few people out of business, so let's hope it's the sleazbags who go first.

The technology needed to shoot, edit, author, and replicate a DVD has gotten to cheap that there are no longer any meaningful barriers to entry, in porn or in any other sort of video production.

The effect that I've seen that have in both porn and other aspects of the video business is it hollows out the middle. The guys who have something special still make out just fine, but the guys who used to be good enough get dragged down by all the newcommers/wannabe's with a DVX100 and a copy of FCP who willing to work for next to nothing.

i subscribe to videoz which every pornstar must hate because it offer you the chance to download 1,200 movies for £15 a month. if you buy a porno it cost £20 normally and they give you the chance to download 1,200 for less than it cost to buy 1 dvd. like the others have said there's no quality most porno follow a simple formula that gets repeated endlessly. i started filming porn so i did some research and after download 200 i completely went off porn. i would have to really want to see a porn film to download 1 now.

now there are more than 1 of these sites now so it's no wonder there as been a recession. the funny thing is most pornstar haven't even heard of videoz. all the porn they shot today, tommorow in a year will be the same has porn already on the market there not going to reinvent sex. so who will produce films when there's already a libary of films out there for people to download for next to nothing. The star will keep the industry going but there's a lot of excess porno made that will get cut out.

people have seen everything the porn world has to offer like gang bangs with 500 people i mean where do you go from there? people only need to invest in new porn if it features a new pornstar they like or any pornstar they like but has for sex acts alone they have shot every thing worth seeing to death.

The thing about porn is that it is just well...porn. No matter what you do it will be porn. There is a girl and she generally gets fucked, abused, and fucked again. It's kinda like a wheel, you can chrome it, gold it but you can't make it more rounder than it already is.

yeah the porn studios are in real bad shape. Nina Hartley likes a hot cup of tea on set, and Theres two or three studios that make her re-use her tea bags two or three times.

I created a thread:
[invalid URL removed]3 Things You Wish Porn Studios Would Do

And there has been around 70+ responses and over 2,000 views by people who share an interest in seeing a change in a lot of what studios are doing. The problem is it shouldn't all be the same but it is. The key ingredient missing is creativity. Creativity, for the most part is free. Adding fresh new dialogue, getting sexier clothes to wear during the sex, getting unique locations, showing unheard of positions and angles.

How many scenes have you seen of a girl having sex in a movie theatre? Probably not a whole lot. The ones you have seen, happen to be slightly more memorable because of it. How many have you seen where the girl is wearing roller skates in a roller rink? How many have you seen at a carnival in the house of mirrors. I mean there are just so many places to take it. It's not about just the sex but also about the illusion, the buildup, the passion, the psychological factors.

How many scenes have you watched where a girl dressed up like a cop puts a donut around the guys dick before blowing him?

There is a really giant lack of creativity and it seems the studios are going the easy route. They are going for quantity instead of quality. It takes more time to get creative and more time to get the stars to do what you want. There is prep, there are demands made but it results in something different.

So how do you correct the problem. Sure we could talk about there being one, but what is the solution?

All you have to do is look at spending patterns. Guys follow girls. They see a girl they really like and they will follow her to see the different films she's in. They do that because if the film stinks and all the other girls aren't that great, at least that one girl is in it so there is that assumed value already. There is less risk.

So how can a studio compete against this pattern? Guys just dropping by occassionally to see certain girls, no cult following of a series, etc. Well you could start with expanding your lines. Stop with XYZ #77. Take a break from it for a second and start with something fresh and new. Tap new markets and try to find new cult following.

You know there really isn't a food fetish line. You know there really aren't any solid clothing fetish lines in the U.S. I'm talking with these things and sex. It's usually just softcore.

I watched an old DVD where a girl is cooking in the kitchen, whipping up some batter and a guy comes in, starts feeling on her and then they have sex. You know what the hottest part was? During the sex she reaches into the bowl of batter and rubs it all over her chest and stomach and she's all creamed looking and into it. It's really erotic.

I think there is a porn recession primarily because porn has been getting worst. You have to really dig for something unique and to some it's not worth the effort. There are only a few solid lines worth following and even then you get the style and theme of that line only. You are stuck in a cycle of watching the same stuff with different girls. There is no change.

I think everyone has to stop and look at what is unique, what you've seen that made you stop and think, wow that's interesting. Wow that's different. And you have to find ways to re-create that feeling for your viewers. It can be done but it's going to take some collaberation, some public opinion, some good ideas. Just like how Hollywood films are made. Nobody says I'm going to stop watching television or stop renting Hollywood movies! It's because you know they are striving, people are fighting hard to get something completely different and compelling out there. There is little settling.

I'm not saying porn should get too artsy, or cut out all the sex and go 100% feature...I'm saying it just needs more creativity and more effort in tapping the untapped markets.

The question is, are there any untapped markets in porn? If you don't think there are, read the thread I created on [invalid URL removed]3 Things You Wish Porn Studios Would Do

I've personally stopped renting cause as someone said earlier, its all-anal now! The Industry has followed this trend/fetish for to long now. As long as anal continues to dominate the shelves, im not renting or buying.

I couldn't find it, but I recall a thread like this about 2 years ago where some of us were saying the same thing. Go figure. To me for every 3 average titles and God knows how many piss poor movies there is a grade A #1 yummy-a-thon. So it all works out.

Quality is the main issue. I agree.

There are several things that are killing the industry:

1. Females have no power. Every scene now is about a man DESROYING some female. When was the last time you saw a senusous blowjob? It's all angry face-fucking now.

2. Quality females shoot themselves in the foot. They keep buying into this idea that racism sells, anal is evil, and that they can be Jenna Jameson if they could just get a contract. They need to focus on making quality scenes, and not killing their market value by writing off Black fans.

3. The people who produce porn do nothing good with the hottest chicks. Someone else said, there's not creativity. If I see one more chick in a bikini and clear heels I'll puke. Men want to fantasize about women they see on the street. How about some more thematic attire rather than the tired old stripper uniform?

4. Fetishism has become a race to the bottom. The circus act of "lets see who can harm/humiliate/dehumanize females the worst" theme that was started by Max Hardcore has reached it's predictable outcome. Women are sexier as people than as objects, but the sadistic frat-boy culture that predominates the back side of the cameras has lost that vision. Remeber when a woman could express her personality though fucking? Rember Jeanna Fine, Ashlyn Gere, and Tia Bella? There is no such expressionism in porn today. A woman is now no more than a collection of body parts and an intersection of holes to be pounded.

5. There really is too much anal. I dig anal, but didn't always. A little anal is good, but too much is a turnoff.

6. Likewise, the little-girl theme is over done. Another Max Hardcore gift, you know the teenie bopper sex is out of control when a 25 year old is considered "washed up" and starts billing herself as a "MILF". Grown women are greatly undervalued.

7. Movies are shot and lit like crap. Yes, she has a nice ass, but I'd like to see her face ONCE AND AWHILE! I have seen whole scenes where the females face is never shown. Or where the action is all in shadow. Or the cheapest, stupidest low quatlity sham ever brought to the industry: POV. UGH! Porn is fantasy, NOT reality. Can we get some stylized cinematic sex please? I don't mean 20 minutes of Matrix Slo Mo, just better angles and lighting.

8. Too much violence. I love women. Too many males who make the product hate women. There is a happy medium between the horrid monotany of Vivid and the hate mongering sadism of Meatholes.

Wow. That list was longer than I thought it'd be...

So do I.
'Writing off black fans'? I don't think there have ever been as many black and IR-themed titles, lines and labels as there are now. Or maybe Sasha Grey, Paige Turner, Tiffany Rayne, Brianna Love, Claire Robbins, Julia Bond, and Euro talent like Silvia Saint, Eve Angel (OK she quit doing guys a while ago), Monica Sweetheart, Katja Kassin, etc. aren't included in 'quality females'?
Very good points.

I think you have to look for the tried and true directors of your choosing. Directors that are consistant are the best bet for your porn dollar. The industry as a whole has no effect on individule
shooters.

Ahhh, but herein lies the problem, Eduardo.

The "black fans" want every whore to fuck anyone that is thrown at or suggested to them, because after all they get paid to do so. And we know that when you get paid to do something, you just do it...no questions asked, right?

When said star is placed on that pedestal, she is a "racist" and an "IR dodger", when in fact she chooses not to screw interracially in her private life.

(completely facetious in nature, I couldn't say this with a straight face and without an edit).

In the 80s and 90s I bought every anal vid available. Now I buy none.
It's not interesting anymore, and the goofy choke-gargle-slobber junk is even worse.

fuck the bullshit. Im tired of hearing this about porn suffering financially. Ive probably spent more this year(2006) on porn than any other year since Ive been indulging in porn. That'll be 25 26 years by now. And that's because Ive had the money to spend. It's starting to sound like regular Hollywood crying the blues about losses when they make boo-koo money. I'll never forget hearing director/talent Jonathan Morgan say circa 1997: "There's never been a porn movie that hasn't made back it's money".

As a whole I don't think it is in recession. I think the industry is still growing. It's much more mainstream that it used to be.

There is obviously more channels of distribution today. There are now websites, ppv digital TV, DVDs, VHS, specific porn channels, magazines. The porn industry in the US alone is worth $10bn a year, doesn't sound like much of a recession to me with that kind of money being spent...
