Just about everything I try to run on it causes it to go haywire or doesn't work to some degree.About the games - I tend to like games with better graphics (well, who doesn't. But not insanely processor intensive ones. And I'm sure freeware is rather limiting in the graphics department). Anyway.....although I do enjoy games like Morrowind, I'm not crazy about all the quests and stuff you have to do if you want to get any real enjoyment out of it. I kind of prefer games with a simpler premise. Not too simple, though. I just have a bad memory so I need something where I don't have to remember too much. Oh.. And I'm not real big on fantasy. I prefer somewhat realistic games. It's kind of hard for me to find what I'm looking for because I'm not a big gamer. I don't really know what's out there and trying to figure out what I';m looking for with Google is nearly impossible. I will check the link. Thanks. [Link] |

While not free, the first one was released in 2002 and I've seen it in the bargain bin at Best Buy for like $7 or so. I'm not a fan of swords and sorcery-themed RPG's, but since I travel so much, I've found that RPG's in general are great ways to burn a few hours at the hotel or on a plane. The Freedom Force series was comic-book based superhero vs supervillian stuff. Pretty funny dialoge in many places and reminded me of comic books when I was a kid. I highly recommend the series....check out the Wikipedia link. Another way to save some big $$ on gaming is to buy something like NeverWinter Nights or similar that has a big modding community. There are so many freeware community-released "mods" out there that give you additional adventures and stuff that you could literally play that game for years and never pay another dime. I've downloaded several of the mods/new scenarios for Freedom Force over the years....some are craptastic, but some are literally brand-new games and missions. All for free. If you are into MMO's, you could also try something like Guild Wars....again, not free, but unlike other MMO's such as Worlds of Warcraft, there is no recurring monthly fee. My latest city failed totally, massive debt. The nice thing about these games on new computers is that if you can find a money generating budget scheme you can set the speed to high and fill your coffers. EDIt: SimCity games for me offer just about as much micro-management as I can stand. I have played SimCity3000 and beyond and all they do is add complications to a working formula for fun. I really had zero clue what I was doing at the time, but it was fun just to listen to my girls (and a couple of their online friends) teach the old man the ropes of an MMO. We were in geek-heaven and I got some really interesting perspectives on why these MMO's are so popular. They are basically chat clients with an activity built-in. The "hook" that keeps people paying month after month is that the community of online friends creates this draw, coupled with a desire to stay "leveled up" with them as well so that they don't outpace you. Pretty interesting dynamics....I've actually applied some of this to my own business with some of our employee compensation programs with good success. Recently, I tried WOW (Worlds of Warcraft) and wasn't into it that much. I do enjoy RPG's in general, but not so much the MMO variety. Mainly because I play so sporadically that I can't stand the need to get a team going, gossip amongst the players, wait for folks to show up at a raid, etc. But the single-person RPG's seem to be a dying breed. Like you, I've found a lot of abandon ware out there to keep me busy, and I've bought a few that allow for lots and lots of "mods" to give me more adventures, etc. See my post above for more on that. I hate the Sim-series of games....too much micromanagement for my tastes. I enjoy a good story instead. My oldest daughter is a Sims 2 fanatic, however. She's always asking me for permission to download some new "mod" for that game also. [Link] |

Knowing what is actually going on in online games would put many parents more at ease about their kids gaming habits. It's not so scary. The single player RPG is far from dead. If you want some recommendations for GREAT games you can pick up in the bargain bin for 10 bucks. Well I'll tell you anyway. get Fallout 2 The link goes to some reviews. Videogames may not be labeled as an addiction just yet, but I'm betting they will be soon. They are clearly a big no-no for the true OCD player....a death sentence if there ever was one. For our family, MMO subscriptions, iTunes subs, etc...those are all forms of allowance. My kids do chores, they earn points. I am glad my parents had no idea of the trouble I was causing. BBS's and Warez and pRon through my early years. I met people I would play games with online, my folks had no idea. It is just cool to hear of a person who is informed about modern life being a fair and cool parent. And check out Fallout 2 the best single player RPG on earth. Kinda like real life. Once you've made your millions and/or done whatever it is you aspire to do, it's kind of boring. SimCity is still fun though. I am more of a twitch gamer. Lately all I have been playing are Bullet Hell style games. I loved that they said "Games that have this genre are sometimes known as manic shooters." It actually takes lots of practice to deal with the mystifying placements of hitboxes in these games but if you get hooked they are a great challenge. If you actually care about learning a new gaming genera the wiki article does them justice if you also click and look at the links for a couple of the games on the list to get a real for the "curtain fire". My hand eye coordination is probably pretty keen at the moment. This style of game hasn't been too popular in North America due to our (very sadly) vanishing video arcades. And many arcades I have been to recently have gotten pretty lazy about machine upkeep. Like a broken part on a pinball table or old worn out micro switches under the buttons of the cabinets. Their game play style practically demands the use of arcade joy sticks. Luckily Asia still loves arcade gaming so people still make them. Has anyone looked at that list of 50 indie games? Several of them have been very fun. But not 20$ fun, unfortunately. I was just checking this thread to find that link again cause I want to game. Then to add insult to injury games that are really good on consoles get released on PC's with no thought for the differences in systems. Crappy ports of console games. I am still grumpy about the bewildering control scheme for Resident Evil 4. Ihaven't made it past a boulder crushing me repeatedly because: On the screen I suddenly get a message "PUSH THE DASH KEY!" (or whatever key) then I get crushed because I have no idea where this key is supposed to be on my keyboard. None of the controls are mappable and it isn't mentioned in the documentation or resolved by the patch. I can't enjoy a game that gives me impossible to follow instructions. Damn you Nintendo!!! And this got GLOWING reviews for every other system but PC. Another recent purchase was Overload. Which bills it's self as the player gets to play an evil overlord and control minions. Sounds cool. Turns out it was just a resource management game, might as well have been a real time strategy. The box tells you that you can be as evil or as nice to the people in the towns as you want. In the actual game you HAVE to help to help the townspeople to advance the plot. That isn't very evil. [Link] |

However, "Curse of the Azure Bonds," an old D&D title that came out after Pools of Radiance, is listed on here. I know that particular game was released for PC's with EGA graphics (remember those kids?) back in 1989.
