Is there something to recommend as far as a DVD burner box (not part of a computer system) that would work well for transferring VHS? I see some on Amazon. I have to do a little research. I think they are a VCR/DVD combo.
Would there be something that just can take a full tape and toss it on to a DVD with chapter stops every 5 minutes. No work on my part to author that DVD, just a straight transfer.

I had a Panasonic that was okay. One of those things that took some real reading of the manual to do it properly. I mostly used it as a combo VHS/DVD player.

Personally, if you already have a VCR, I would just get a DVD recorder with a hard drive. You can record the tape to the hard drive unattended. You can then edit the hard drive to delete any excess recording. For example if you have a tape that 1 hr, 21 minutes and set the recorder to copy for 90 minutes, by using a quick record function.
You can then delete the last 9 minutes from the recording on the hard drive.
Then you can do a high speed copy to a DVD (about 6-7 minutes) then finalize the disc and you're done.
Actually, not only is that what I would do. It's what I did last year. I bought the Magnavox MDR515H from Amazon. However, I didn't pay anything close to the current $399 price. I paid $248 for it last June when Amazon was still selling it themselves.

Thanks Robert and Bill. What kind of chapter stops does either of them add in - is that adjustable? It would be nice every 5 minutes or something or is it one big DVD recording? I think that DVR system would be the way to go. Oh, I'll just read all the Amazon info. Someone said a similar box is cheaper if you look around, like Walmart.

I got that Toshiba from Amazon for $109. I had been looking for one for about 2 years and determined that this machine was probably the best price/performer of all those on the market.
The major problem, I've found, is ease of use. The Toshiba is easy to use particularly if you just want to do a quick and easy dub of a two hour tape.
The default Chapter time is 10 minutes. It can be set for 5, 10,15,30, or 60 minutes. Once you change it from the default is stays changed.
User manual is 113 pages. Very good step by step instructions (with pictures) for all the procedures. Example: Setting for auto Chapter is 5 sentences with a picture of what you will see on the screen.
I have converted about 25 VHS tapes with my PC and software. Never again unless I want to "edit" the tape. I have two identical PCs so I wasn't tying up my PC for two hours per conversion. It's just a pain in the butt compared to doing it off line (set it, forget it).
Send me a PM if you want to consider sending some of your VHS tapes to me and have me convert them. I send both the DVD+Rs and the original tapes back. Piece of cake.

The Magnavox automatically adds chapters every 10 minutes. However, it adds them at the time that the content is recorded to the hard drive, not when it's recorded to the disc. Therefore, if you copy something from TV, and then edit out the commercials before copying it to disc, the chapters won't be evenly spaced out. For example, if you edited out 3 minutes of commercials inside of a 10 minute block, the chapter skip would be 7 minutes for that chapter. I don't remember if you can selectively insert chapters or change the default. I've never tried doing either one.

I think I will get that Magnavox but the 513 series, which is just more available right now and cheaper. It's 320GB instead of 500. I had some idea such a device existed. I had no idea that any type of simple edited could be done. Must be pretty minimal like removal of commercials. I'm just looking to archive lots of tapes. Load them up nightly, I guess and toss them on DVD. The VCR to DVD looks good and simple too, but I think I'd be able to use the DVR in the future.
It's gotta be DVD+R, right? For usage in any DVD player? Thanks for the info guys.

The Magnavox units (both the 515 and 513) will record with both +R and -R discs. You just need to make sure that, if you want to play back on another player, other than the Magnavox, you finalize the discs.
