The primary motivation for the link checker was to detect/prevent linking out to domains that had expired and now redirect to malicious sites. Over the time this forum has been around there's been hundreds of porn stars that have come and gone. Many of them had personal sites that they allowed the domain names to expire and malicious people snapped them up. We try to prevent linking out to bad neighborhoods. It hurts us in Google if we link out to sites that will harm your computer.

IIRC, broadband was out, but didn't have lot of market share where I was yet and knew many that had dialup then. IIRC, a grad student I hung out with had dialup Juno at her apartment (it was free or next to nothing, but ads everywhere). |
