I have been in this business for three years now and at least 1000 DVD's have crossed my desk. Is there really a need to have so many company's producing new porn every month? I think I could probably jack off for the next 50 years to a different porn every single day and still I would not have watched even 1/10 of whats out there. Why so much?

There's not nearly enough niche DVDs, like gaping.
1. Greed/entrepreneurism: There's money to be made. 2. "Dumb" pornfans are brainwashed into craving new girls and new titles at all times. So they have to buy new stuff. 3. "Smart" pornfans believe that someday someone will finally "get it right" and produce that elusive "perfect" movie. So they continue to gamble on new stuff.
Hehe. I have thought of the same myself. I do actually get a lot of older movies, and I'm sure that if new porn somehow got banned worldwide I would have done fine. But I love to see new, pretty faces once in a while, and its always a nice surprise to discover something new that you really like.
In my opinion , there really is a need to produce "quality" porn and , like smallcock said , more niche dvds , like the Japanese do.

interesting question. i think there's enough porn out there where i could jack off to a new (to me), scene everyday for the rest of my life until i die. i am constantly discovering girls who are "new" to me and am amazed to find out that they're well-established and been around for years. in some cases, they are already retired by the time i've heard of them. so, yes... there's plenty. and plenty of money can be made on what is out there already. just look at VCX or VCA or whatever. they just remastered their catalog. i'm sure millions of porn fans will be seeing some of that 20+ year old content for the very first time. strange world.
I wonder what is the intended market for that old stuff. I doubt the newbies will see any appeal in it. It's just too tame by today's standards and the women are too "mature" by today's standards and the males are too "gentlemanly" by today's standards.
There's probably no point in continuing to make the same movie over and over. As other have said, more niche stuff would be cool but I don't know how well that would go over here in the US. If it was safe to make it here, I'm sure someone would be making it already. I think they're clearly worried about legal issues. Porn has to be "normal" here.
I think it's financial rather than legal reasons for the shortage of niche porn in USA. There are a plenty of quite "tame" niche subjects that go untouched. For example all the "leg fetish" productions use the standard thin models with long lean legs. There are plenty of guys (like me) who would like to see more "curvy" shapely legs in heels and hose. But it doesn't exist. Because the market is not big enough to sell mega-thousand copies. I'm sure there are plenty of similar examples.
I think porn has the unique ability to led its consumers. Sex sells. I think that much of what we see available on the market is the producers not having to take a chance and expand. "Standard thin models" sell. Bad porn sell. Good porn sell.

you know, that's not necessarily true. recently i've been downloading alot of old Nina Hartley and Ginger Lynn stuff. and amazingly there's some pretty hardcore scenes there that are awesome even by todays standards. the only thing lacking is the production quality we have today.
Actually the basic premise here is naive to say the least. There are still people buying it and that's why there is a need for more. It's greed, and greed is what makes the world go round. You may as well ask do we need more cop dramas? I could probably watch CSI, NYPD back to back for two weeks straight and never catch a re-run do we really need more? I could probably read X-Men Comics non stop for a year and never reach the end, do we really need more? The answer to all these and a million more hey we've already seen this is yes we need more.
Perhaps the current popularity of the storyless Gonzo movies is what makes you ask this question. When every film tells more or less the same story again and again. And only the actors and the actresses change. Then such a sex-story becomes boring to watch after a while. There are zillions of books. And more books come out every year than ever before. And I haven't yet heard anyone ask if there really is any need to write and print more books. I think the porn-film industry needs to get over its infatuation with storyless Gonzo. And start porducing some interesting and unique porn-stories on film. And then just as with books, people will never ever ask again if there really is any need for more porn movies. I don't want to watch old movies. The reason being, I like to see girls with up-to-date make up and hair styles. The 80's and even 90's looks are so dated imo. Girls have never looked better than they do right now, maybe this will always be the case and I will want porn where the girls have a contemporary look.So I think I will always be wanting a new title or two.

There's a lot of porn being produced, but actually good gonzo scenes are few and far between.

Yes we need it all, because 3/4's of it is produced by people who think that they are artists and don't realize that all we need is straight on shots with good body display of hot young girls doing real nasty things for our viewing pleasure. It doesn't get much easier than that. But no, we have annoying voice overs from the director, endless mouth excrement from the stars, sideways camera shots, cumshots to the foreheads, etc, etc, etc.
Indeed. Do you think it's possible that some of the world's wealthiest people could go broke just buying porn? I can see how it could be possible to spend a shitload of money with a really fast internet connection and a bunch of hard drives. The nature of porn is that most porn connoisseurs have far more porn than they could ever watch. Many people probably barely watch a given movie once. There are just too many movies being made for a "Oh. That's a good one! I'll be watching that again". That would take away from "This one's gonna be fuckin' good!".
I hope you're not talking about straight on shots from the same angles every time? If so, that's one of porn's greatest failings. It creates that two dimensional "trapped in a box" feeling.
It's a formula that works so why not keep doing until it doesn't anymore? Yeah, there are some of you who'll complain about seeing the same kind of scenes over and over again but apparently this type of thing has works just fine for thosands of other people. Yes, there are a limited amount of senarios but all you have to do is insert a new/different girl into it and it becomes entertaining again. Most people don't come to porn expecting inovation and orginality they simply want to see women have sex.
I would browse through those thousand dvds in about 20 minutes, perhaps find 100 that draw enough interest to inspect the covers, cast, and content. Out of those, ten would likely stir considerable interest, and I'd have three from those selected in the time it takes to reach the checkout counter. I might make it back once more that week to at least rent, selecting two more, while determining the other five, all fall a bit short. Thats ok, hopefully you'll have some new stuff in by Monday.
Porn especially gonzo is trapped within certain self imposed parameter which give it a cookie cutter sameness. Until someone comes along and gives it a kick in the ass along the lines that Orson Welles did for mainstream movies. He and his troupe were not a part of Hollywood. His ideas opened the scenes, made them three dimensional and gave the actors greater freedom. I cant see that happening in porn in the near future, due to producers apparent desire to exert total control over the product(the girls). So when the next new thing comes along, example; atm, cream pie it will be shot the same old way. Sex sells itself, when you have the girls the rest is automatic.
Not to mention there is like has been mentioned a silent majority. For every one person who claims they want a porn with a plot and a story and all that good junk there are a dozen silently cursing this assinine set up or interview and are leaning on that fast forward button, or better yet today just skip.

LOL. Storyline in porn? No thanks. Storylines is why pre-90's porn sucked and why Gonzo and every other kind of porn engulfed the world after the internet. Only a minority of viewers need or want a storyline before getting off.
Yes there is a need for more productions but I believe there needs to be more CLASS and STYLE. Ninn Works is a step in the right direction as is Andrew Blake. They provide extremely hot scenes, done with class and style. A little Balls to the Wall, throat gagging, double teaming, head banging, ultra-raw sex goes a long way and that seems to be the course most producers chart these days. The "Night Trips" series was a great example of class and style. I agree with Ninja 1 when he said... "Smart" pornfans believe that someday someone will finally "get it right" and produce that elusive "perfect" movie. So they continue to gamble on new stuff." Just think how awesome the Handjob, Blowjob, Older Women with Younger Girls, Blindfold, Massage, and Girl-Girl genres would be if they were produced with class and style! Combine a mix of seasoned and new talent and the results would be spectacular! I liked seeing the posts from some younger viewers who say they really enjoy the older stuff (VCA, ESSEX). A lot of it was done with class and style and it was just as "raw" as today's stuff. Watching Cara Lott get seduced by the older woman in "Sweet Young Foxes" is an excellent example of class and style. What a stellar scene! Now, imagine a scene like that with the hot new stars of today. Please don't get the idea that I'm stuck in the 80s because I have a vast collection of new stuff. I'm just saying that the modern producers could do very well with some class and style!
I've been porn fan since the seveties. The more extreme female performers: Annie Sprinkle, Vanessa Del Rio, Veri Knotty and many others were good performers for their time. The demand wasn't so great. Fast Forward to Summer 2008 and the demands are intense for all involved. Is it a feature or gonzo? Is it romantic or rough sex? Threesome? Anal? Interracial? POV? I see Jon Jon(new black stud)is attempting his own porn venture. From looking at the box I'm not that impressed even though he's put in decent scenes for other producers. It's really an impossible question. Tastes change, demographics change, technologies change. I liked the Bogas Bros when they were around and was thought crazy for liking them and their style. Now, I'm down with Jay-Sin and L.T. I can't get enough of those guys, currently. I'm sure that will change in a year or so.

I have seen so much of it, I need more. I figure I have watched in montage over 35,000 videos. I get off harder today than ever before using tantric. New girls, better quality video and audio, porn today has more eye contact, shot using checkback video, etc. There is so much more to do in this relm. Please, put this question to bed. Fans need to voice and challenge for better quality all the time. More creativity, new ideas. Get us off!
Perhaps the pre-90's porn plots weren't done the right way. And that's why they lost their popularity. Whenever the plot of a porn film gets away from sex even for a short time. Then it distracts and disappoints the viewer. I think the trick is to make sex a part of everything that happens in the film. And then the plot is simply a way of making the sex-action more interesting and more entertaining for the viewer to watch. A good example is the award-winning gang-bang scene with a lady named Jenny in 'Rocco's Animal Trainer #5'. This scene has a plot. There is some acting. But the plot and the acting make the sex more hot and more interesting, instead of distracting the viewer and making him wait for something that he wants to see. I see no reason why more scenes like that shouldn't be made. When the scene is award-winning. Then there must be something good about it.
That's true. I honestly don't care much for plot in porn. I do like a good set-up though (such as the good volumes of "Brother Love's POV"). However it is undeniable that a lot of people must love a plot, or else Vivid wouldn't be doing so well. I buy a lot of porn, but much of it is disappointing. But I also see a bunch of mainstream movies which don't live up to the hype or trailers either (oh well). I have encountered though a goodly sum of those that are stand-bys and I watch over and over, but much of what I buy tends to be "one trick pony" dvds that are forgotten as soon as I have watched them. The market might be oversaturated, I've heard talk here and there that profits are down, but that's Economics 101 - more supply = lower prices and thus lower profits to producers. I say keep it up, but there are still more gals who have been in films that I may never get to. Gives me a reason to get up in the morning though.
I don't think there is any reason why porn movies must either have a plot or be completely plotless. There is a third choice available. Which is something in between the two. Instead of just having completely plotless Gonzo movies that seem to be telling the same story again and again. It would be nice to have role-playing Gonzo scenes. Where the actors and actresses pretend to be professors, college students, judges, lawyers, real-estate agents, house-sellers, house-buyers, nurses, doctors, patients, bosses, secretaries, bankers, hedge-fund managers, financial regulators, Fed officials, FDIC officials taking over an insovlent bank, collection agency hustlers, foreclosure negotiations between a banker and a homeowner, plumbers, housewives, politicians, lobbyists, taxi drivers, bus drivers, flight attendants, passengers, border guards, illegal immigrants, whorehouse workers and their customers. When the porn scenes relate in some way to real life that people experience. Then this porn becomes a parody, a comic relief, and most importantly good sexual relief all rolled into one. It's not just sex. It's sex presented in a very interesting and entertaining way. Which is what you need to sell porn. Edited by - Dan on 7/19/2008 2:01:39 PM
There is a third choice which are called vignette movies. Check out titles like Buttman Comics Presents Vault of Whores from Evil Angel. That and Buttman Comics Presents Tales From the Crack are my two favorite vignette titles. Each scene has a set up/mini plot but it doesn't really carry through the whole title. The Barely Legal series from Hustler is another vignette series, not as good though.
Rodney Moore's vids have the vignette style. They're entertaining, often wacky and offbeat, and I give him credit for keeping the creativity alive after hundreds of scenes.
+1 to this. Naughty America does this kind of thing pretty well. Sadly much of their stuff is only on their website or in pictorials and not on DVD (I'm still waiting for that scene with Carmella Bing being screwed in front of her College class to come out...sigh). My biggest pet peeve here is when they do the "nurse fantasy" it is invariably done in movies in some grotesque plastic fetish wear. I want women dressed like actual nurses (heaven forbid!). That is in scrubs and th attire that they would wear in real life. This would be great for me. Sadly though Naughty America DVD's are often pretty sparse (very few extras, etc.)
I'm much more a fan of the "vignette" or "up" stuff than a full blown plot/story. I think the SMASH PICTURES movies like CHEATING HOUSEWIVES does a great job with short "ups" and they even give the viewer an opinion of having the scenes with or without them. I don't even care if the "up" is clever or original I just like to see some senerio of why these people are getting together. I also like seeing the girls dressed in normal or sexy outfits sometimes. Having a scene start with a naked or semi-naked girl posing for the camera for a few minutes then a guy just shows up for no particular reason is okay sometimes but I find it sexier when there's some sort of reason for them to start having sex.
Porn with plots or stories are okay but the problem I have with a lot of them is the amount of time they spend on the plot between sex scenes. I basically want to see sex when I watch a porn movie so if there's too much time being spent on non-sex stuff I get impatient. Also, many times the plots and the acting aren't really strong enough to draw me into the story. I think that to have a plot worth paying real attention to takes a bit of screen time and it's hard to do that if sex scenes are being tossed in so it's kinda a really tough thing to to find that perfect middle ground with me. I can understand other people liking a full story and plot in their porn movies but I'm just not one of them. For a company like VIVID I'm much rather pick my fav girls and watch a compilation DVD of their scenes than the actual movies they were taken from.
