Now, having said that, I don't like Jake Steed's back cover message in LWCBBMD. Some of you may or may not remember, but about 3 months ago I posted my own thread about Little White Chicks 17, about the exact same thing. He made a bunch of fucked up comments on the back of his box, and at the end of his movie.

I guess my feeling on it is this:first off, Cyberchicken is totally right, calling your buyers racists for watching the film is stupid for a couple different reasons. In porn, you generally get two types of buyers:The kind who are constant buyers who love porn, and they will take what Steed said as an insult and not buy his product again. And the second kind is the novice buyer, who is conservative and doesn't buy much porn. That buyer may actually believe he's a racist for buying the film, and then he won't buy again, so either way Steed is fucked. So, from a business/marketing perspective, Jake Steed is making a monumental mistake!

But most of all, whether you're white, black, or whatever, I just don't like people making light of words like n*gger and racism in general. But, I'm not buying anymore of Steed's product, simply because his films just are not what they used to be.

As to the passage itself, well here goes.
There is a lot of faux racism in porn and for some reason the fact that it is in porn is supposed to be all the justification that is needed to make it okay. I've never managed to work this one out but since it is presently a feature I have to ask myself which bits of racism I am to baulk at and which bits I am to let go.

Interestingly this bring me squarely back to the word 'nigger' which whenever I hear it brings up a major bone of contention, a perceived inequality on my part. I would never refer to someone as a nigger and would expect justified criticism were I to do so. My problem is when (some) black folk think it is okay for them to call each other nigger but not for me to do so. Their sole justification for discriminating between their actions and mine must be on the grounds of the colour of my skin: being white precludes me; their language is designed to exclude and differentiate on the grounds of race. This actually pisses me off greatly (especially in rap records moaning about racism on the one hand and yet using such exclusive language as 'nigger','brotha' and 'sista' at the same time. It makes me wonder who are the most racist, the rappers or those they vilify).

So what has all this to do with the price of fish? I'll explain. These films (as exemplified by the LWCBBMD series) are really pretty racially slurring towards black men portraying them as monstrous sex fiends, animals who prey on innocent white women. If I take umbrage at Jake Steeds' racism aimed at (specifically in this case) whites and yet allow him a free hand at misrepresenting those of his own colour I am doing the one thing I have said I object to! If I allow Steed to insult blacks I should allow him to insult whites; if I am to assume his portrayal of blacks in the series is light-hearted why should I not make the same assumption about this poem?

As warnerfamily pointed out, this film is clearly not a racism-free zone so you either take it as it is pitched or you leave it!

As you so eloquently explained, this is not about political (in)correct speech and eventual efforts to curtail it, but about "speech acts", as defined in "speech act theory".
Speech is neither free nor conducted in a vacuum. The contrary is true: speech has effects (and costs) and always takes place in a context and more than not the effect of speech is depended on the context. That is why the concept of "political correctness" is a problematic one. It is depended on the definition of context and that definition is not 'natural', but 'cultural', and therefore not 'universal' but depended on socially constructed 'meanings'. The author of any speech ought to reckon with this, especially in the context of either commercial or political speech.

The process which you have described, is a fairly familiar one and points towards 'empowerment' of minority groups. This is not just a racial/racist phenomenom either. Think about the history of the words "queer" and "gay", and how the gay movement has appropriated these terms for its own end. It is explained as 'taking back' or 'taking control of' one's own language and, subsequently, history; or, IOW, it is about the struggle for 'meaning'. This can go very far, as some more extremist Queer Theorists dealing with Film Studies have proven.

And here is my problem with this series. I don't have a problem when a (minority) group or members of a (minority) group use processes of 'empowerment' to (re)define themselves, along racial/racist lines or otherwise.• To do so, would be racist, or at least paternalistic. I also don't have a problem if members of said (minority) group commercialize that 'empowered' image. But, like you, I DO have a problem when those members subsequently accuse non-members of 'playing ball'. In a way, I reverse your reasoning: if it is OK for Steed to 'misrepresent' his own color, than he has no business to call "Muthafuckin Ass Whipe, Or Ass White, Or White Ass" customers "racists". Or am I to believe that Steed markets his series to an exclusively black market?

• I don't have a problem with this 'speech act'. This doesn't mean that I necessarily agree with the speech itself.
