i never hear anything about vr porn anymore. its been around for at least 10 years but does not seem to have caught on the way some others had predicted. i am subscribed to about 30 mainstream sites per year *not all at once* and naughty america is the only one that i see pushing VR and releasing scenes. is there still hope within the industry that it will catch on or is it pretty much what its going to be and just be there for its very niche hardcore audience?

Not by a long shot. There are a lot of developments going on with VR but perhaps the most telling is the gaming industries biggest titles coming out exclusively on Meta Quest which seems to have the most going on at the moment. If you are talking porn wise then theres is a lot of girls on spatial VR cams as well as a lot of studios shooting in the VR format so i dont think the VR genre shows signs of slowing down at all right now

I don't think it's dead. I think it's just limited and has a limited audience. VR specific sites like POVR and SexLikeReal are still making or hosting a bunch of videos coming out each week. But VR is tricky for a whole host of reasons from both the consumer and producer.

From the ones producing it (This is mostly focused around professional grade B/G scenes):

  • Positions are limited, especially when sticking to POV style. There are just a lot of positions that don't look great when in VR, whereas positions like spooning can still show a lot of action in 2D porn.

  • Scene cuts for breaks, repositioning, "fluffing", water, lube, etc. all become harder to pull off when the viewer is expecting a long continuous and immersive experience. I feel like a lot of performers these days rely on things like fake cum shot into the urethra, or drugs to keep them in the mood. Harder to do all that when you can't get away with the lame scene cuts that often happen, especially right before something like a money shot.

  • Leaving the POV genre is possible but still limited. Often the movement of the camera in 2D almost goes unnoticed, but moving a VR camera can cause nausea and vertigo in a VR headset.

  • Matching viewer expectation of dick size, shape, and color. A lot of dudes can get off to 2D porn with random stunt cocks, but VR consumers often complain about not being able to enjoy the immersion when the male performer has a penis which looks vastly different from their own.

  • File sizes are typically bigger, and can be much bigger. A 4k 2D video might be a few GBs but I've seen some higher quality VR scenes that are closer to 30 GBs, and that's a big difference when you are talking about hosting, streaming, or uploading potentially thousands of times per day

From the consumer side:

  • VR setups require some dedicated space and time. I can watch 2D porn virtually anywhere on my phone or cheaper laptop. I can stream it directly onto my TV from websites either through a smart TV or video game system.

  • VR setups are often expensive, especially for a good setup. There are some decent stand alone sets out there (I personally have the Meta Quest 2). But the internal storage of the quest, combined with the file sizes of high quality VR videos, means you are probably going to need to spring for a better setup with a computer that has the system requirements to run a VR set.

  • It has to be something you enjoy. I know there are people out there who just simply don't like the feeling or idea of VR porn.

I'm sure there are others I missed, but these were things that came to mind as a long time porn and VR porn user.

^^^^^^

very good detailed comprehensive answer. the immersion aspect when done right is really the only thing appealing about the process for me. i am a huge fan of dp,gangbang, blowbang and group sex scenes so the actual content i like cant feasibly be even produced in vr it sounds. technically group content and such would work in 3d *i think* but that has been a dead technology now for almost a decade. the file sizes also would be a huge drawback for me. i want my porn fast and easily accessible but what you described sounds almost like a ritual just to view a single scene. not to mention vr can only involve Porn stars who have been shooting within the last 10 years. if i want to watch a Porn star from 15 or 20 years ago in vr it is impossible. so you are limited to very current performers only. which is another huge drawback for my personal tastes.

I am hoping AI fixes this for us. Honestly, it would be such a boon to older performers. Can you imagine them being able to release new scenes starring their younger selves? I'm looking forward to things like:

AI, give me this VR scene but make it star Ginger Lynn when she was 20
AI, give me the Gauge scene from Perverted Point Of View but make it true VR

lol both of those prompts would be amazing. technically possible too with the way AI has advanced just year to year but who knows. i guess we can always dream and maybe someday!

I think I mentioned this on another post in this forum, maybe it was Reddit. Even if we can't get generative stuff from prompts (there might be laws or restrictions around that considering you could also just as easily say "Give me the Gauge scene from Pervert POV, but make it VR and instead of Gauge, use my boss's hot wife"

But I do think it might be possible in the future to convert existing 2D scenes to 3D.

do you think 3d will make a comeback? at least to the level it was at around 2012 where every high end tv was coming with 3d capabilities built in? this would i think anyways be my preferred method as with 3d you are not limited to pov only content. does your vr gear have traditional 3d capabilities built in? say if you wanted to watch the avengers or some movie in 3d assuming you had access to the 3d print would it work with with your current vr headset? basically 15 years ago when people were wearing and buying 3d glasses for home viewing that is the same thing as your modern vr headset?

I guess I was referring to 3D more for just the non-pov type stuff. Personally I really only consider it "VR" if it's in POV. I've seen a few "VR" scenes that aren't POV and are essentially just regular camera angles but shot with a VR camera so the action has depth. I am probably using those terms wrong though.
