Please tell me you went to the hospital or a doctor for this, Jane. This is definitely something that requires medical attention. Along with making sure it doesn't get infected and that the nail is eventually removed, you need to get medical attention for it so that the nail actually grows back. Back in 2012, I stubbed the big toe on my left foot on a raised block of sidewalk (wearing shoes, mind you), the nail was broken and purple appeared under the nail. I never bothered getting it looked at, I assumed it would just fall off on its own and grow back. Well, it never fell off and I was left with a gross-looking dead nail on my left foot. It wasn't until a year ago that I finally had a podiatrist remove the top half of the nail. They told me that they thought it was likely the nail would regrow. However, it's a year later and I see absolutely no signs of growth. So, I'm stuck with a big toe that only has half of a nail; fortunately, though, it's not at all painful, it's just a matter of appearance.

An extreme case, I know (I was stupid for not having it checked out right after the injury ocurred and, especially so, for waiting years to finally have it looked at!), but I figured I'd tell you this in case you're having doubts about having it looked at by a medical professional. I apologize for bringing all this up in your Star Crossed thread, but I had to because I do not have a Twitter account.
