While the monthly question may seem poll like in nature, the idea is to go past poll like answers and actually have discussions about it. If you have a themed discussion you would like to see, feel free to PM it to me for future editions. So off to the first one. January 2013 Monthly Feature: Best Feature Film of 2012 What do you feel was the best feature movie(s) of 2012 and more importantly why. You don't have to limit yourself to just one, a few is okay, but do go into depth on why you feel that your selections are ones that no fan of features should miss. The reasons why are entirely up to you. And don't hesitate to list lesser known titles. Although shot in HD, I felt that Travis (who was also the DP), understood how to properly employ HD videography for its own aesthetics rather than trying to make the movie look like film. I also thought his videography for his 2011 movie, PORTRAIT OF A CALL GIRL, was outstanding. Strong dialogue elevates what would otherwise be a pedestrian drama. Excellent performances from both leads also helps. My one real gripe, and it's a personal one, but Xander Corvus has a supporting role. For some reason, his screen presence irritates me. I don't think he's a very good actor and his method of delivering dialogue always makes it appear that he's really taken with himself. A final comment, and perhaps a strange one: I think a lot of people, myself included, who love X rated features always applaud contemporary movies which remind us of the masterpieces made in the 70's and 80's. Hell, tha's why I love so much of Paul Thomas' work. But I think extra attention and praise ought to be given to directors like Travis (and Nic Andrews, whose feature work is arguably some of the strongest of the 2000s) who aren't trying to emulate the filmmaking styles of past decades and are instead creating work that is artistically distinct. Travis succeeds with that in spades and makes me hopeful that he'll be given even bigger budgets (and better actors) to create more excellent projects in the near future. [Link] |

Her talent is obvious, especially in the scenes without dialogue. She glances up and smirks at times. She quietly laughs to herself others. She glances down at the right times. She's simply natural but the emotion, and overwhelming emotion, is conveyed perfectly. Plus, she does excel in an extended monologue that likely brought many to tears, hell, even the crew. But it's clearly a XXX feature, and here Graham Travis's long-time friend, Mason, likely took the lead. If you had forgotten that this was coming from the same studio that brings you Big Wet Asses and DP Fanatic, the climax will surely remind you. The group sex scene was easily the best of the year. Both girls just pushed, and pushed, and gave and gave, one-upping one another and themselves in the process. Lily Carter even gets double penetrated, unplanned. Pure erotica. Pure, raw, sexual depravity. I saw Portrait and really liked it but not as much as Wasteland and I think that is because Wasteland was the story of a relationship between two beautiful women, rather than just one girl's coming of age story. Wherever Graham goes from here, it's clear he has set the bar really high for himself, and the others, well, they're not there yet. I would like to toss a shout out to Eddie Powell and Jackie St. James's Torn which was amazing, but not quite as amazing as Wasteland. [Link] |

She had to play a complex individual with a multitude of characteristics, a big ask, you couldn't be faulted for thinking this over ambitious from Nica and Sovereign. The result though is a very impressive, strong performance, one that I wasn't expecting and pleasantly surprised. The sex scene between Syre and Jasmine Jem is worth noting, a very hot scene, convincing and believable and integrated well into the movie. Added bonus: Veronica Harts performance in a non sex role.
