A buddy of mine just got back from Japan, and he brought back some porn he bought in Tokyo. He brought back this stuff called "AV Idol" that had incredibly beautiful women, but all the crotch shots were blurred out.
Can someone explain to me what the deal is? He was also able to find "non-bluured" porn...

I'm not sure why they do this. I've heard that it is illegal to show pubic hair in Japan. I would drop a note to customer service at XonAir with this question. They carry a very large selection of Japanese porn and AV Idol titles. I'm sure they would be able to help out.

In Japan, it is illegal to show pubic hair & penis in videos. That is why they are all blocked out by mosaic. Years ago, the showing of private parts in magazines are not allowed but somehow someone started it & no one complained so it was "somehow" allowed. I don't know where your friend got those un-censored ones , probably underground videos. AV idols are the most beautiful girls in Japan, even seeing them topless is very nice. Those girls in samurai video are no where near those AV girls.

Just one more note: in Japan, they sell a device called mosaic remover which removes the mosaic in videos. I am not sure if it really works but they are expensive.

It is illegal to show penetration and female and male genitals in japan.
It is only recently that they allowed hair nudes. This is where they can show the pubic hair but not the genitals. So they are slowly starting to open up their porn.
There are some undgerground stuff in japan that is uncensored but that is usually amaetur stuff.
You'll very very very rarely find an Av Idol in one of the uncensored underground stuff.
it seems with the recent trend.. they are starting to show more asses..since asses aren't censored.
well thats just my 2cents.

There's no such thing, it's a myth and anyone who claims to sell that is just trying to rip you off.

In response to DGF mail,
The product is not a myth.I saw it on some Japanese adult magazines. But I don't recommend getting it since the instructions are all written in Japanese plus I don't know if it really works.

I wanted to post a new topic on this, but I'll try here first... the obligatory question.
What are your Japanese AV idol/general DVD recommendations.
Just checked out Xonair.com, and they have a good, wide selection, but the question is, which ones have you seen, which ones are good?

If they are not allowed to show pubic hair... why not just shave! Problem solved ;-)

Takeo: they can show pubic hair now.But they are still not allowed to show genitals.
There are some shaving vids but they still have mosaic on the genital area.

I guess what I meant to say is that is doesn't work. That it's a rip-off.
The reason is that if the data isn't there on the tape then it can't be recovered. When those mosaic things are put on, the data is lost and therefore can't be recovered.
My guess would be that what the product does is that it smoothes out the pixels. This is done by say taking two pixels(or mosaic squares) side by side and creating a new imaginary(note that it is IMAGINARY and not real) pixel in between that has color and brightness in between the surrounding pixels. The process is repeated over an over. It's an image enhancement technique. But note that this is not the same as removing the mosaic. You wouldn't actually see a mosaic allright but probably just a blur instead of a mosaic. Geez, what much have you achieved! So technically it would "remove" the mosaic but it is not really the kind of removal you had in mind when buying the rip-off device. This is just a rip-off and does not and cannot possibly work as advertised.
I know I sound self-confident in saying this and the reason is because if the data is not there then it cannot be recovered, period. The only way I could be wrong is if somehow the method used to create the mosaic didn't really overwrite the video signal at the particular location of the mosaic. This would be a theoretical possibility with a DVD, while with VHS it seems like an impossibility. Nonetheless it seems very unlikely that even on DVD the data would be retained in some way. It's also conceivable I could be wrong if the mosaic were not a true mosaic but instead contained within it an encrypted or scrambled version of the original. But again, this seems extremely unlikely as it would require intentional complicity of the video producer which could get them into legal trouble.
I'll tell you what. Does the product advertisement offer a money-back guarantee? I dare bet it doesn't!!! The fact that is doesn't offer a money-back guarantee would be final proof for me that it's just a rip-off. At the veyr least it should offer a guarantee or provide some kind of trial or demonstration.

But I thought in Japan they celebrate "Penis Day"???
I'm serious here guys..don't they have a yearly parade?
I've seen it on channel thirteen and the chics do very softcore acts down the streets holding huge penis like dildos.
???
Am I mixing it up with Korea or China?
If so..the japanese are really stupid people because if they can't show CHOCHA and PINGA in their flicks but can celebrate "Penis Day"..than what's the whole point?

P.S: I love the japanese..because they made Playstation 2.

Sonic's right, there is a Penis Festival in Japan and it takes place in March. From the article there's a Vagina Festival as well. Now that I have got to see.

Concerning that mysterious anti-mosaic device:

Years ago in the times of the Fido-Net, I came across large collections of Japanese pics with mosaics, cut out areas or areas which were made unrecognizable by some algorithm.
There were indeed programs which could restore the original pics. In case the area was blurred by some algorithm the program could reverse it because the data was there, it was just scrambled.
Pictures with mosaics or cut out areas often had the missing part included somewhere else in the picture where it was really hard to find and calculated that part back to where it belonged. Often steganographic approaches were used.

I guess it's not totally impossible such a device could work for video-tapes, especially since I already heard some rumors about them at that early time.
I could imagine placing the original part of a picture which is usually made unrecognizable onto some area on the tape which doesn't get displayed. Well... may be unlikely though. On the other hand : If the 'forbidden' parts were really scrambled and not only mosaic'd out chances were there was a decoder for that.

I remember reading an interview with Linda Thoren and she was saying that porn in Europe is not paid very well.United States is better and the very best for the pay is to work in Japan. If in plus they don't show genitals seems to me like the place to go for a porn actress.Tricia???Tina???
