Another hypothetical: japanese xenophobia. If foreigners are perceived as dirtier, more promiscuous, more into drugs, carrying more STDs etc then a JAV star who works abroad (not just shooting porn) might then be perceived as "tainted"/less safe by her domestic customers. Western porn studio offers probably aren't enough to offset that.

Also should consider that JAV & its pornstars aren't that big in the west to begin with and I believe there's more to it than just the censorship (or simple "cross-race bias").

I think it's a shame, because there are a bunch of JAV stars I'd like to see shoot both uncensored content and appear in western-style shoots/scenarios/action.

Meanwhile western pornstars seem to make working vacations out of their JAV shoots.

Not denying that xenophobia could play a role here, but I'm not sure if that's really the correct term. Why would anyone leave their home country for an uncertain future, let alone for potentially worse pay, even? Trying to adjust to a new culture when most JAV actresses don't speak English. Doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do to me.

And I mean, is it really surprising that JAV isn't too big in the West? It is produced for a Japanese audience first and foremost and the US and Europe are producing more than enough porn on their own. I mentioned some of the differences between the industries earlier and there are many more. Not everyone is willing to get over cultural differences and the language barrier. It's also a matter of being conditioned to one style of porn. And similar to a lot of Japanese media it used to be rather hard to access JAV from outside of Japan in the first place, thought things have luckily improved over the last few years. But also similar to a lot of Japanese media there is a rather small, but really dedicated Western JAV fandom. I'm part of it.
