I need to talk to the ISP a little more. The sales guy indicated that our chat server shouldn't be a problem IF we only allow the Java interface and not an open IRC interface. [Link]

IRC networks are often used by zombie bots for distributed denial of service type attacks. I think it's pretty common for hosting companies to not want the aggravation of their networks being used for DOS attacks. [Link]
