She didn't do that many movies (i.e., she never got "shot out") and she spaced them out nicely too. And timing-wise, well, she came up right at the time when porn was getting big in the mainstream. Frankly, with her brand of porn, if she were starting today, I wouldn't say she'd be exactly unemployed, but her career would've been forgettable, IMO. Think about it. Look at Jenna's strict guidelines: No anal No extreme gangbangs No gapes No bukkake No gokkum Not saying you have to do all of these things to be recognized these days, and God knows half the above have no appeal to me personally, but like it or not, this is what the girls are doing today. And unless your ultimate goal is being a Vivid girl in condom-only scenes, not doing ANY of the above in the year 2007 will ultimately make for a modest career at best. (Although I have to give a lot of credit on that to her ghost writer Neil Strauss. For an even better book, read Strauss' autobiographical "The Game" about pick-up artists.) You gotta admit, Jenna helped push porn into the mainstream and probably set the standard for porn star success. Turns out the fake boobs were totally unnecessary. She had a lot of pleasant sex, produced a lot of respectable porn, knew how to use her name in the mainstream media, and new how to make a lot of money and stay healthy at the same time. Mostly thanks to timing: oh yes 100% Nowadays girls and boys entering porn are just expected to do too much. Jenny is one very lucky girl and I wish her a very nice retirement. There will never be another pornstar who will be as well-known to the mainstream public, or who will dominate the entire industry the way Jenna did for well over ten years. Her reign as the Queen of Porn was longer than US Presidents govern. The biggest problem for the porn biz over the past seven years was not the number of convictions of industry people, or renewed outbreaks of HI-V, or renewed government attacks. But, rather, the inability of the industry to attract and keep a suitable replacement for Jenna. Someone who was smart, sexy, a girl-next-door, and classy enough to act as the positive female symbol for the biz. Sadly, all of the possible contenders have opted for retirement, or been driven out of the biz, over the past two or three years. And IMO without the "Jenna Symbol," the industry will continue its decline from a "big tent" biz that had a large, varied customer/fan base, to a small, specialty (gonzo) niche business--with lower revenues, and poorer quality product. Porn will continue to be the career of last choice for women with no other choices. And "Glam Queens" like the Vivid Girls will become a thing of the past--and the quality of girls at Vivid is already slipping. So love her, or hate her, but the departure of Jenna Jameson is not good news for the biz. [Link] |

It was pure luck, timing and Jenna being smart enough to capitalize on her exposure that helped made Jenna a "star". If Jenna had to do it all over again today it would never work. The E! network took a liking to Jenna back then and Howard Stern had her on a a lot and put her in his movie. Those things had a big impact on her being seen and known. Mostly timing and luck. Not because she was the best looking. Not because she was the best performer. Not because she was the best porn actress. She became a name brand. Ron Jeremy is also a name brand but never really turned it into anything other than a punchline. I thought for sure Mary Carey, Gina Lynn or Tera Patrick could turn their media exposure into real stardom but they all seemed to stall. But of the 3 only Tera seems interested in becoming that type of star. [Link] |

Click to expand I don't think I agree with that. I don't see all girls who do porn as equal. I think there are subgroups of porn star "stars". I see Jenna and Tera Patrick as "stars" but not the same way I see Belladonna or Gianna also as "stars". Contract girls can get away with doing next to nothing and mostly get by on good looks. They sell the mostly "watered down", "safe", "vanilla" sex that most people can easily digest and not be offended by. The Gonzo girls are mostly judged by their sexual performances and if they look good too that's all the better. If a Gonzo performer comes in to the biz with a list of things she won't do or doing scenes like a contract girl she's not going to get noticed or get much work and will soon be forgotten...unless she looks so beautiful fans and directors are able to overlook her performances/style.I've never understood the appeal. Even if I never watched porn and Jenna was my "gateway" pornstar (like I think she is for many people) I would totally forget about her once I saw some of the other pornstars featured in movies and on boxcovers. I don't think I've ever watched more than about 3 or 4 minutes of a Jenna scene. To me she's kinda like Porn's Dane Cook: A big star with a huge following but no one I know think's she really that good.[Link] |
