When I first wrote about this topic back in 1989 for a now-defunct magazine called Shmate(Yiddish for 'rag'), I discussed the importance of a strong presence of Jewish performers in the porn industry: 1) refuting the myth of the wimpy, asexual Jewish male, a myth continually perpetuated by Hollywood and especially, yes, Jewish film makers like Woody Allen. The myth both reinforces anti-Semitism and negative self-esteem among Jewish men. 2) refuting the myth of the Jewish American Princess, a myth also perpetuated by same (although TV's "Will and Grace" is a glorious exception) that also claims that Jewish women are asexual, that they'd rather shop than fuck, etc. In addition to reinforcing the aforementioned trends, it conditions Jewish men to believe that Jewish women are not sexually desirable. Hence, they pursue women who are not Jewish, with the result being that intermarriage skyrockets. These are not intermarriages based on genuine love, but on Jewish singles saying to their partners, "Oh, thank goodness, you're not Jewish!" Before I stumbled upon the disproportionate on-camera participation of Jews in porn, I myself believed the JAP myth to be true of Jewish women and dated mostly Gentile women for that reason. At the risk of sounding "evangelical", the porn industry saved me from a life of unending negative self-esteem and loathing for the better half of my own people. As a result, I've been married for the past 11 years to my own kosher cheesecake. I have believed that spreading the word on this matter will do likewise for many of my fellow Jews. Over at "Heeb" magazine [the spiritual successor to "Shmate"], they seem to get it, as they are constantly fawning over Joanna Angel and Nina Hartley. Woody Allen's comedies of (roughly) the same period, have some of the same "feel" as the Brat series. BTW, I don't think "The Brat" series was a knock against Jews, the way most porn IR is against blacks. But, the Brat series did "play" with easy to relate to situations of sexual frustrations, in order to introduce a light, comedic storyline to a sexvid. My main point is that I believe it "good" to acknowledge that there are Jewish porn girls. IMO the biz should be viewed as a place where ALL types of women/men can participate. Porn should not be viewed as a "dumping ground" for girls who are new immigrants, poor, ethnic--or that no one cares about. I simply used this thread to make that point. Candida Royalle, another Italian-American New Yorker of Catholic background, occasionally refers to herself as "Jewish by osmosis."That is your perception, but if stereotypes commonly associated with Jews are applied to Gentiles, this does not make the characters "secretly" or "implicitly" Jewish. I never agreed with those who claimed that the Ferengi of "Star Trek" represented Jews because they were short and were obsessed with money. Porn doesn't need to hide - if it wants to say someone is Jewish, it does so directly. For example, in "Debbie Duz Dishes", Nina Hartley played an explicitly Jewish housewife and her mother (only heard over the phone) spoke with a strong Yiddish intonation. The family headed by Ashley Moore and Gloria Leonard in "The Three Daughters" was explicitly Jewish - there was a huge mezuzah on the doorpost. "Mitzi's Honor" dealt with a Jewish gangster who cheats on his wife. "Porny Monster" stars Joanna Angel, playing herself as a Jewish woman, at one point seen reading "Heeb" magazine.On that, we agree. To newveggie07: "Jewish Law" is what only a minority of Jews, namely the Orthodox, follow. Reform Judaism, Reconstructionist and secular Judaism accept that either parent makes the offspring Jewish, as does Israel's Law of Return. Personal qualities that are not explicitly sexual can still induce a sexual response in the viewer. And that's to the credit of the porn user, that it's not always just the genitals that matter. It "comes in handy" when refuting the myth of the porn user as one-dimensional objectifier. BTW, Siobhan Hunter is Italian.
