I'm wondering about any stories or info people have about the process of pornstars finding work outside the industry after retiring. Is it easy/hard/just depends on the situation? Are there certain professions people end up gravitating towards? Have there been situations where a person's porn history was a strike against them in getting hired? (Since evidently there are a few people in the world who watch porn, I can imagine someone interviewing with an employer who had masturbated to 27 different scenes the person had been in.)
Before the internet hit total saturation, I'm sure that most porn performers could go out and get a job doing just about anything they wanted without a lot of fear of being recognized. I say "most" because there were obviously a handful that gained mainstream notoriety if not appeal. But since the mid-90's, I'd say porn has hit the saturation point where even those few performers who did just a handful of films and want to get a mainstream job will find some avenues closed to them. Witness the recent case of a Tennessee(?) schoolteacher "outed" for doing porn. She went to college, got her teaching degree/certificate and was actively teaching and someone outed her from old internet footage/clips. The fact that she WAS "outed" should still indicate that some jobs/career paths will forever be closed to past porn-performers since societal values are still rather closed-minded for some vocations. But given that capitalism is still alive and well in the USA, I'd suggest that self-employment options are quite boundless for the smart performer who banks their porn career earnings rather than blowing it on the vice of youth. Trouble is, that's like 1 in every 100 performers you see....most just either don't make enough to matter or were fucked up before coming into porn and so porn just fucked them up even further during the exit interview. Porn can be a money maker for head cases, but in most circles, we'd call such a practice "exploitation." In porn, it's typically labeled as "fresh new talent!"
I own a small construction company. Suppliers use a lot of ex strippers as sells people. It's a natural fit. These girls are used to dealing with men and very good sells people. For girls leaving porn. Look for sales jobs in male dominated industries.
Once you've done porn you will never work as a teacher and you will never work in law enforcement. It seems a lot of girls go into some sort of health-related profession.
I think someone may have posted this before, but it's a pretty fascinating compilation of "Where are they now?" blog entries about past porn performers. Many, unfortunately, are dead of suicide or murder but I think that's somewhat the nature of blogs of this kind and not indicative of porn performers' lives post-porn in general. Most fascinating to me in the list was actually Barbara Dare. She was the HOTTEST porn star of the 90's in my recollection, a contract girl, made a bunch of money, etc. Now she lives with her parents and is reported destitute. I would think that thanks to the internet and there being so many adult/porn companies a performer could just move into behind the scenes stuff or earn enough from their websites to continue to make a living. There are lots of ex pornstars still doing scenes but selling them through their sites. Others hire other girls to provide content. Many continue to strip. I'd also have to think that many pornstars are in a position that they can marry a rich or well off guy because of their looks or who they are. when you're goodlooking you basically have it easier in life. When they get into their late 40s and older things might get tricky but I imagine they're really no different than plenty of other women that age.
