I might be stupid, but I can't figure out how to use the kickback thing.

The instructions appear to be as clear as mud to me, sort of indicating I have to do all my browsing, etc through ADT and then somehow click something somewhere and somehow end up on 5-star's page.

I do not want to browse via ADN, I'd rather browse with 5-star's actual pages. With all the pretty pictures and the idiot-proof interface and the hyperlinks that take me where I actually want to go. Even if it's on a whim.

I was trying to make an order and stopped bothering in disgust.

Anyone want to explain it to me in single-syllable words? If it's as clunky and painful as it appears to be, I might as well bin the whole idea of using the thing. Bin the whole damn order in fact.

Bah.

It's really pretty simple. You should first create a Kickback Program user profile. You can do so from this page (accessible through the Kickbacks link on the menu to the left.) After you have created a profile follow these steps:

1) Find a title that you wish to purchase using our price search. Eample: You want to buy DMJ6.
2) From the price search detail page click the Add to Cart link above the 'Check Stock' button. This adds the item to your ADT comparison cart.
3) If you would like to purchase another item go to step #1.
4) After you have all of the items you wish to buy in your ADT comparison cart click the Comparison Cart link on the menu to the left. This will show you your basket.
5) On that page click the Compare Total Order Cost at Each Store link. (This page might take a little while to load depending on the number of items in your cart.)
6) Under Five Star's logo there is a "Get Your Kickback" logo. This will transfer the items in your ADT comparison cart to a shopping cart at Five Star. It will also include any available coupons by default.
7) Place your order at Five Star within the same browsing session to earn Kickback credit.

I'm not sure why you think you might have to browse at Adult DVD Now to earn Kickbacks through Fivestar. If that's a typo and you meant to say that you don't want to browse via ADT, then you won't be able to use the program. The purpose of building a cart here and transferring it to Five Star is to create a means of tracking your purchases back to your ADT profile. Otherwise we would have no way to track an order and know where to issue credit.

I apologize for creating something so incredibly painful and for using too many syllables in this post.

Sorry you're having problems, scipio . I know what you mean--I recently made my first kickback order and it was pretty confusing. Let me see if I can explain it simply (Drew or Steph, correct me if I'm wrong):

The whole kickback idea is that if you place an order at a participating merchant (currently only Five Star DVD, but others will be participating) and use the "transfer cart" feature, then part of the affiliate commission that AdultDVDTalk gets will be given as credit to you toward a gift certificate. This is how mainstream programs like ebates.com work too.

The reasons you need to place the order via the price search's "transfer cart" function are:

1. It makes sure AdultDVDTalk gets credit for the commission.
2. It makes sure the kickback goes into your account (which accrues and is redeemable in $10 increments)
3. It proves to the merchant that sales are being generated via the Kickback program. I wouldn't be surprised if a portion of the kickback you get from AdultDVDTalk is a bonus store contribution (in other words, both AdultDVDTalk and the store give you money back).

Here's what I do:

1. I browse through Five Star's web site and write down titles I want to buy.

2. I go to the Kickback login page and log in.

3. Then, I look up the titles I want to buy in the price search, adding each one to my "comparison cart."

4. Once I'm done, I view my cart and then click on the link "Compare Total Order Cost at Each Store".

5. From the list of vendors, there's a "Get your Kickback" icon under Five Star's entry. Once you click that icon, your comparison cart is transferred (along with any coupons that apply) directly into your shopping cart at Five Star (so you don't have to do twice the work by having to fill the cart there).

Anyway, that's it! I agree the instructions could use some work, and having to browse and then use the price search is a pain, but I don't see how else it could be done. I think it's minimal hassle for potentially getting 5% back on already low prices.

Hope that helps,

- Saki

In a future version of the ADT price search I plan to incorporate browsing other sites in a frame within ADT. That way you can maintain the Kickback functionality while still browsing at a store.

To simplify -

You can add any item to your comparison cart that you want to buy at fivestar - You do not have to add all the items to your comparison cart that you wish to buy.

Then you can go to the total order comparison with that one item and click the kickback link. You can then add items to your shopping cart at fivestar - you will get kickback credit for all the items bought in that shopping session.

ADT earns a 10% affiliate commission on the order. We are giving half of that back in the form of Kickback credit. Kickback credit is redeemable in $10 increments. If you do the math you need to spend $160 through the program to get to the point to have $10 in your account. (As an incentive we give you $2 in credit when you create a Kickback account.)

There has been discussion of doing special redemption bonuses where the store would provide additional value over and above the face value of the redemption amount. Bonuses like: redeem $10 in Kickback credit with an order of $50 or more and get a free copy of Friendly Freaks #154. Or: Redeem $10 in Kickback credit and get a $15 gift certificate from the store. etc.

One last note:

Q: Why do you have to do a Kickback program cart transfer from ADT to Five Star to use the proram?

A: The cart transfer process creates a unique tracking ID. This ID is used to track orders back to ADT Kickback profiles. We do it this way so there is no sharing of personal information between ADT and participating merchants. The only information that we get is an order number, the unique tracking number and the commission generated for the order. Without that tracking number we can't tell who placed the order.

Yeah I know what you mean...I used the kickback program for the first time a couple of days ago, but nothing came up on profile/balance. Fivestar have already shipped the dvd's, but yet nothing shows. Does it all get added up at the end of the month or something?

Saki -

Thanks for the empathy and explainations on how to use the kickback system. Glad to know I'm not the only one that got confused by it.

Drew -

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that you put a lot of work into it, and that it's something for nothing, and that it's only a good thing for ADT, the E-Tailer(s), and the consumers.

Yes, the ADN was a typo, meant to be ADT.

The thing is, I knew roughly what I wanted to buy, yes had a price-searched list and all that. Put in a couple of titles, re-checked their prices, etc, had a 5-star window pop up, and went browising internally. Then I found a couple more titles I would have like to pick up as well.

This means that instead of keeping track of all my costs and orders on the 5-Star pages, I would have to do it on paper as well, then do it again on ADT.. and, let's face it, I have NO idea how to also use those 5-star coupons you're displaying at the moment in conjunction with all the rest, since clicking on that link sends me to 5-star..

I understand and understood all the reasoning for the way it works explained by Saki before I went to try to make the order, but it just doesn't work for me at the moment. I like to be able to add/remove/change titles on an impulse, really easily. To see something via a little link, add it and forget about it until I look at my cart, recheck the details on each title, cull what I might get next time then click my confirmation and be happily done.

The idea of having the kickback affiliate in a frame on the other hand, sounds like an excellent (and for me at least) the ideal way to implement the kickbacks. I look forwards to it greatly when/if it can be done. (like BFL/Reel etc used to be).

If perhaps I could skip the entire comparison chart (since a kickback order is a 5-star order by default, at least for now) I might use it, or if you could login to your kickback account, choose your kickback store for this order (so there's somewhere to add more stores as they join) then go and do the whole order without seeing the varied prices.. (that's what I use the price searches for, in a seperate windows, independant of any orders).

So anyway, I have a question for now: If I clickthrough to 5-star from one of their banners here and make an order does it register the sales as having been generated by ADT? How about if I were to include it in a shipping note-email that I'm -AT- 5-Star because of ADT? (so you guys get your 10%).

At this point I can't be bothered playing with the kickback thing for -my- rebate, but I -would- like to make sure ADT gets it's referral monies from my purchases..

thanks,

scipio

All that you need to do is place a single item in your ADT comparison cart and click through to Five Star using the Kickback Program link. You can add/remove any number of titles in your cart at Five Star after you are transferred to their site. You will still get credit for any items you add to your cart through the Kickback program even though you didn't transfer them from ADT. The only down side to this approach is that the coupons aren't automatically activated.

So no wonder it wasn't working for me either. You can't get to the site you're buying from by virtue of ADT?? I usually shop using the site I'm going to buy from, but you're saying to add everything you want into the ADT cart and then transfer over?

Torris - you don't have to place your entire order in the cart here at ADT, only a single item. Transfer that item to Five Star. This establishes a tracking number. You can add/remove items from your cart while browsing at Five Star. You will still get credit for all itmes purchased through the Kickback program on ADT.

While you don't have to place all of your items in the ADT cart and transfer them it is the preferred method. It makes it easier for us to accurately maintain your Kickback account.

Drew, you mention that if I do most of my browsing in 5-star's pages the coupons will not be automatically activated...

I was wondering how I DO activate the coupons once I get in there.. I haven't tried yet, so it might just be an obvious link or something, but I'd rather ask BEFORE I try to make an order, and perhapsfind I am unable to do it for whatever reason then have my head explode again.. ;)

cheers,

scipio

A coupon will automatically be activated when transferring your ADT comparison cart to FIve Star using the Kickback link on order comparison page. (This assumes that the items in your ADT comparison cart meet the requirements for the coupon. i.e. a $5 off $50 coupon would have to have at least $50 worth of items in the ADT cart.)

The automatic coupon activation occurs only if you use the cart transfer. It's not an automatic thing that occurs simply from browsing their site.

I don't know if there's a way to activate a coupon from within their site. You should write to them to inquire.

The easiest way to activate one of their coupons is to click one of teh coupon links in the right column of our home page. They currently have a $5 of $60 coupon and a $12 off $100. (These links will not earn you any Kickback program credit.)

I think I followed the instructions Drew gave but when I went to transfer my cart to Adult DVD Explorer, that wasn't one of the options on the comparison stores list. Are they not participating in Kickback?
