Hi everybody :-)

After another long internet-session I came to the conclusion that many webpages of big, well-known studios often tend to be really bad.

With really bad I mean 'not up to date', 'bad design', 'not working links' and stuff like that.

As only a few examples Anabolic and Diabolic come to my mind. It's obvious that these companies belong together. Both their web-pages are similarly bad. The design is lame and Anabolic's webpage has been stating for months that new DVD-releases are arriving at 04/02/01. If there weren't a few updates every few months, I'd think these pages were abandoned.

But there's another great example : www.extremeassociates.com has got a website which is even more amateurish than many pages I've seen having been created by schoolkids. The design is extremely bad (can we talk about design here ?) and the content looks unprofessional. The texts often look like having been written by an angry teenager. About half a year ago they stated that their forum will be back shortly. I can't find a new forum, but after having taken a look at the old one from time to time, maybe that's not even bad.

The worst page I've seen yet, though, is the Armageddon-Entertainment page which gets linked from the Extreme Associates site. Is it really only one big ugly page with a few pictures on it with some of them not even working from time to time or did I miss something ?

I'm not sure what I want to say with this post. Maybe that I wonder why big studios with well-selling products which are of great A/V quality and well-mastered present their companies in the internet by using webpages even frontpage or fusion could create better automatically after a click on a button. Don't they earn enough to offer a professional web appearance ? I usually try to avoid companies with such crappy web appearances. If it wasn't for the professional appearance of ADN or Fivestar I'd certainly not even buy one single DVD from them.

Explanations or other opinions are highly appreciated :-)

Spesedy,
I couldn't agree more. An unprofessional or outdated web presense speaks volumes about a company, IMO, and to me, would carry over to the general concern as a whole. Perhaps
in the early days of the net, this could be overlooked, but there really is no excuse for it now. It is not at all difficult to do, so I don't understand the reason for these
terrible sites, I would be embarrassed! I'm sorry to hear, but not surprised that Extreme has not re-done their site. You might find
THIS THREAD entertaining.

spesedy - I would guess the unprofessional websites stem from an inability to find webmasters / web design firms. The most well-known web design firms don't do adult sites. The well-known adult webmasters are used to making subscription sites, which is completely different from creating an information site. Another issue may also be that web sales are still not as profitable as offline sales.

In dealing with our clients (non porn), they have no idea how much a good website can increase business. We offer a plan of action, but in the end have to create the site that the client wants. Then we get them online, drive a bunch of traffic, and they realize that we were right in the beginning. So then we have to go back and redo the whole site. This learning / redesign process takes some time. Maybe it takes a little longer in the porn biz?

BTW - I'm going to move this to the adult dvd talk forum so that the studios will see it - and hopefully realize how important their websites are.

Hi DB :-D
I know that thread, I've read it a few times to be sure I didn't understand anything in a wrong way. It just sounded too unbelievable. But was quite amusing ideed ;)

Steph, thanks for the nice try to find an explanation ;-)
But I still don't understand bad webdesign to THIS extent. Of course not every website can be as great as ADT , but one could code a better site in a few hours with a text-editor. If they'd use a tool like dreamweaver they were able to create a professional looking website themselves in a few days without the need for pro-web-designers who certainly were overkill for their kind of page :)

Spesedy - I'm always there to offer a theory or two ;)

A member of this forum (who I'm surprised hasn't spoken up in this thread :) and I were actually discussing the poor functionality and lack of updates with one studio at the last trade show. The studio rep asked us if we knew someone who could do the site, since he was paying a guy that didn't seem to be doing his job.

While it seems easy to many of us to throw together a site with a web editor, it's a foreign language to others. Even simple things like establishing a purpose (provide info, make money, drive sales to..., etc.) for the website is a major task.

It would be great to hear from some studio reps on this. My biggest problem with the most studio sites is that they integrate their subscription site with their information site. I'm always surprised when a studio cares about the quality of their DVDs and simultaneously engages in practices like pop-up windows on their website.

I have found that very, very few adult webmasters have a clue of what it takes to actually sell products. 99% of adult webmasters would say the key to success is driving traffic. They think in terms of a subscription-based model instead of product sales.

This mindset doesn't work when building a retail site or a B2B product support site. Take a look at AVN Online. Most of the articles these days are about building business plans for sites with niche content and driving traffic to them. The magazine is pratically useless for anyone doing product sales on the web but it's the Torah for many adult webmasters.
