Most things are different there, including word usage. 503 Posts 12/06 |  Posted - Apr 21 2014 : 12:41PMI get notification of updates from Java on a regular basis and when it's convenient I download and install them. The most recent, labeled Version 7 update 55 took exception to some of the web sites I visit as not having valid certificates. The install routine informed me that if I did not ask those sites to provide a valid certificate the current update would not be installed. My other option was to place the URL for those sites on an internal Java list of allowable exceptions. It provided instructions for accessing that list. What it didn't do was indicate which sites were the problem nor how I might identify those sites so I could put them on the list. I went to my control panel (Windows XP) and looked at Java that told me I had version 7 update 51 installed. Have no idea what happened to updates 52, 53 or 54. I've been using a PC since before there was a Windows and presumably before there was a Java, so I'm not a complete novice. I personally don't care if I have a current version of Java or not, so I canceled the current update. I guess at some point a web site is going to tell me I need to have a current version to be able to view it. I'll probably quit going to that site. Anyone else experience this situation? Any suggestions as to what I should do to avoid future grief? I often wonder, when I encounter "problems" like these, what do users who have no idea what's going on with the software on their PCs, do to be able to continue have a useful device that sends/receives their e-mails and allows them to "surf" the net without "going down in flames." Interestingly, he also told me not to worry about doing the update, that JAVA was a dying language (even though they claim it is used in everything) and it is very unusual to encounter a need for a current version of Java. I have continued to run, using Firefox and Opera on both my XP PCs and my JDownloader seems content with the JAVA version (51) I have installed so I guess I'll just stop trying to do the update. I have enough irritations with XP, etc. that this is one I can ignore (I think). Every once in a while JAVA asks me to do the update and I tell it, later. I'm thinking about going to my Control Panel and finding a place I can check that will stop JAVA from asking to do the update. [Link] |

Of course Windows only allows you to access their web sites using IE and when I tried I got a message that I had to install ActiveX in order to see that web page. The instructions for installing ActiveX didn't work and as far as I could tell Windows wanted me to install another download manager that may or may not have downloaded and installed ActiveX. By then I just said "screw it and the horse it came in on."If Firefox disables it that is good enough indication for me that JAVA is close to useless. I use Firefox about 95% of the time and the other 5% I use Opera. About the only reason I use Opera is because it has an option that re-sizes the web page so I don't have to use that sliding bar, which has become necessary when viewing ADT forums.
