At present, I own more than 1,000 adult titles running the gamut from All Sex to Promotional DVD's, Gonzo to Features, Fetish to Interactive, etc., Frankly, I was a bit shocked at the final count and have decided to seriously curtail purchasing in the near future (sorry adult industry). The main reason I have decided to slow down is the amout of use/pleasure/replaying I get per title decreases with each additional title added. Honestly, there were reasons for buying every one of these titles, but some of them are so bad, I cannot recall why on earth I purchased it to begin with!
I have dedicated hours to watching, reading reviews and rating the DVD's myself so that I can decide what is worth keeping and what is worth selling/burning/throwing away. In doing so, I have noticed several trends - lessons, if you will, and thought I'd pass a few along. I encourage those who have additional words of wisdom to add them to this list.
LESSON #1) Do not base a purchasing decision on a 'first time' or 'only' act - Much of the porn industry involves getting fans to desire certain stars doing certain acts. There is an entire genre focused on butts that has little to nothing to do with anal sex, but it gets people buying. I am a fan of anal sex and anxiously await the release of the first anal sex act by my favorite stars. After insufferable waits, the time arrives and I finally get to see what I've desired...and it almost always dissapoints. When a porn star does something that she has avoided her entire career (for whatever reason), it is un-natural. Poor Cytherea was in terrible agony in her first anal movie.
Also, I have learned that going back and buying the "only" (only time she did double anal or cumswapping or b/g sex) is almost ALWAYS a dissapointment. I site DAISY MARIE's early career anal scene. She's never repeated the act since, and though I find her to be beautiful, I've not yet recovered from her first anal scene. The lighting was so poor, it showed here entire body to be covered in stretch marks. Whoever shot the scene forgot to include full body shots while she was getting fucked, so what you got was close-up of 3" erection sliding in her ass, surrounded by a gallon of anal lube and then close-ups of her face twisted in agony. I could site twenty examples like this. Go with scenes where the actresses are in their element. Otherwise, it makes for a bad viewing experience.
LESSON #2) Define Your Porn Likes/Dislikes, Research Before You Buy and Resist Impulse Buying - There are so many reviewers on the web that one does not have to blindly jump into a purchase when a new, hyped title is released. Instead, research which reviewers have the same/similar tastes as you. Also, do not simply buy based on one good review unless you are confident you share the tastes of the reiewer. I have been burned so many times buying a title put out by Ninn Worx. When I was young and foolish, I'd only buy new titles that received good reviews on the web site from which I'd rent/buy. Personally, I hate artistic porn, but the initial reviews were incredible - so I bought. What a waste of money. It is definately better to be the turtle in the race to buy. Believe me, there are enough copies out there that you can get your hands on if you feel it is something you'd like to own.
Lesson #3) It has been my experience that if I find a director I like, sticking with them as they develop their craft will add usable/valuable/replayable titles to your collection - Some people think Jake Malone is too rough. Personally, I love every Jake Malone title I've purchased. Same with Kylie Ireland (directing), Veronica Hart, etc., The genre does not matter and in many cases, the actresses do not either. These and other directors have clicked with me and provide me with DVD's that are worth my time. After all, isn't that why we plunk down our hard earned cash? As long as they are churning out more titles, I'll be adding them to my collection because, I knows what I likes and I likes what I knows.
I could add many, MANY more lessons and perhaps I will add some later in this post. In the meantime, I'd love to hear what others have learned.

I agree with so much of what you said. Good point on following the directors that you like. That may be the one true and consistent thread to finding movies you enjoy. Another good point you make is how movies are reviewed. Since everyone has different tastes and interests, reviews work best if the reviewer shares your same interests. So in a way, you could follow the reviewer too and movies that reviewer liked, you might like.
Have you thought about renting, and buy just the titles that you enjoy?

Hmmm...I don't feel so bad now. I own quite a few DVDs but no where near 1000! Lol! I do, however, have a lot of old VHS tapes I seldom look at? What to do?
I have also learned against buying movies just based on previews or trailers, because that is often the only good scenes compressed into ninety seconds.I have also learned to avoid purchases based on box covers or brochures. Indeed, I recommend going to an adult bookstore that has viewing booths and preview said films before you decide to buy. And never buy movies in adult bookstores because you can get them far cheaper via purchasing on the internet.
Porn is just as much about proper lighting and camera angles as it is about various stars or movies.

You use the service provided by an adult bookstore but avoid paying for it?
That's what I call really classy. [xx)]

bigfoot, I could have written your first paragraph myself (Why didn't I? Because I didn't think of it.)
The most profound lesson I've learned through my years of buying and renting porn is that, from the classic era to the present, the things I appreciate are only rarely -- and accidentally, I presume -- depicted.
I appreciate only:
BG scenes Multiple partners mainly get in the way -- with the exception of a well-filmed 2-girl BJ -- and I don't share the apparent ubiquity of appreciation for lesbian, toys, solo, etc.
Full views The camera doesn't have to be across the street to capture her full face and the action at the same time. I get nothing from closeups or panning back and forth, or a microscope-view of her upper lip, one nostril and maybe a half-inch inch of dick.
Camera angles/Editing When someone hands me a photo, I don't turn it upside down, sideways, twirl it, or rapidly move it in and out of my range of sight. I look at it right-side up, holding it still until I have taken in the content. Perhaps my attention span is too long, judging from 95% of the porn I see.
And, I'm sorry to say, I haven't found a reviewer who apparently shares my outlook. There are several I enjoy reading, but most enthuse about closeups, "hot" GG scenes, etc., and few if any inform me as to the above issues.
Posters here are always assuring us that we "have a lot of choices" to buy or rent in porn, but it is rare indeed that I happen onto a title that conforms to even one or two of my likes. I am slowly despairing that I will ever find a genre, studio, director, etc., that does.
But I'm an addict. Ever hopeful, I search on.

fatalbert we are alike in our tastes.
I too follow the director, most of the time.
I will collect only a girl that I follow.
I've learned the some guys know how to get the best out a a girl. Manuel is a good example, whether he is directing or just appearing.
I try to read reviews 1st. I've come to trust several reviewers, like Roger, astroknight or bouno.
The stash does build up. I have about 250 DVD's and easily the same amount of tapes (over about 20-yrs).

Dracula - Yes, I do rent as well as buy. One of the problems I have with renting is that where I rent from (www.Adult.DVDEmpire.com) only rents Disc One of a multi-disc set. So if there is content on Disc Two, then I have no way of getting to it unless I buy. I have to say that Nookie_Monster's suggestion of going to the adult store and watching it there is intriguing (if somewhat classless - support your local small businesses unless you want to one day buy your porn from WalMart! "Clean up in aisle 214! Stat!"). Perhaps it is a local law, but I've never seen that option where I live and buy porn. What I have noticed is that if there is two DVD's of chapters, the director or money people know to put the hot ticket on disc two. This was the case with Amy Ried's early anal efforts. Renting was not an option.
The other issue about renting is that despite the 29,000 or so titles offered via www.Adult.DVDEmpire.com, much of what I am (or was) interested in (the past five years) is out of print, not available for rent, made by a company that doesn't get it's DVD's rented out by www.Adult.DVDEmpire.com, etc., It sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? But I say again that there was a reason for me purchasing every single DVD that I did at the time. Hell, I thought they would all be the next "Fashionistas", "Camp Cuddly Pines Powertool Massacre", "Ass Worship" or "Cum Swapping Sluts #7" (although I have really enjoyed both Digital Playground's "Babysitters" and 6969 Entertainment's "Spunk'd: The Movie" in the past month or so).
As for me, I have about four or five reviewers who are pretty close to my general tastes. The closest is probably SHORTBUS69 from www.ranchocarne.com.

Its been my experience in bookstores that offer this service, that they do so at a "per movie" rate.
While I've never had the fortitude to use this option, as it entails sitting in a booth, where obviously countless wads are tossed, on and about the seat with some measure of frequency, I've noticed many do possess the resolve, at a cost of around $7 per title.
Fair? Perhaps, but it seems to me "class" is never really part of the equation. [xx)]

You mentioned both Cyterea and Daisey Maries first anal scenes but I guess you were being kind by not mentioning Tyce Bune was in both scenes. "I've never done that before"
series. You're right about the poor production values.
Bookstores Re:Nookie_Monster
If the prices are too high, let them know. Otherwise,
those arcades are not free and neither are the private viewing booths. They collect a lot of revenue from those options. Purchase or rental is not required and
if I can do that cheaper somewhere else I will. It was also
nice to see time and time again the way they would discount up to 50%, dvds or videos that I had previously purchased
at full price 6months to 1 year before. If we are talking about buying and collecting hundreds of titles that don't appreciate in value, then I would rather put that money into an S-"class" Mercedes instead.

Some good points, bigfoot. I mainly look at the girl, the director and the male performer. If I know and like their work, it's a definite buy. Two out of three and I might buy, depends on how much I like the girl.

Thanks, Endless Loop and ronin3 for explaining.
I had thought the preview service was for free and they make up for it by charging a higher price for the DVDs than an online store.

You are right, you have to concentrate yourself.
( And to control yourself ! )
I collect the classics from the 60s to the 90s,
and I havent counted for over a year, but I estimate
I have around 1600 or 1700 movies now !!! And excluding
some creepers made in the USA, I cant say, that I dont like
or dont want to rewatch these movies. I really love most of
the dutch and scandinavian porn classics. I have also dramatically restricted my personal porn viewing habit.
I only watch 3-5 a week now ( many older europorn only
run between 10-60 minutes ). I still prefer real sex.

Porn should enhance sex, not replace it. It should also be a learning experience.
I think I've become a lot better sex partner for my girl friends by watching real lesbian porn.
And I think we both have become much more experimental watching Evil angel videos.

It works like this folks:
One looks at a glass case which shows the DVDs being previewed. Usually about 50 or 60. You go into a viewing booth. You slid a dollar in a slot and viewing time is usually 3 to 5 minutes. There are multiple channels with each channel showing a different DVD. For about 10 or 20 dollars you can preview what you like, remember the name of said DVD, leave, look it up on the internet, and purchase it a lot cheaper that the bookstore sells it for. You are certainly under no obligation to buy a video just because you previewed it. I have indeed been in some shady adult bookstores and didn't go back. But the ones I am referring to advertise on the radio, the radio often broadcasts from there, they cater to couples, and classy looking with with well lighted parking lots. Of course, sometimes they do need to empty the trash and I always inspect a booth before I enter. Almost always its clean and if the trash hasn't been emptied I avoid that booth. And NO, I do not masturbate in said booth.

Yep, reviews have been the most helpful tool for me when it comes to making smart purchases. I don't download porn online so my DVD purchases have to count for a lot, and I prefer porn in this format anyway. Back in the day, before ADT, browsing the local adult bookstore was frustrating because all I could go on were the VHS box covers. And didn't venture into the booths, they kinda creeped me out! Now, thanks to ADT, rame.net, CAVR, Rog Rules and just good discussion on the message board, I find all the helpful info I need. The only downside is when I am curious about a title and there are no reviews and no discussion on it, like a lot of Filmco's output. Then it just requires that risk, so I find the best deal I can online and check it out!

Nothing implied Nookie, I initially thought you were referring to stores that actually allow patrons to select any movie within the store, the clerk takes said movie/s, and for a fee the customer watches in a dedicated viewing booth, up to an hour er so, separate, and apart from the multi-preview stalls.
As far as "those" booths are concerned, I wouldn't believe any self respecting fun loving, porn fanatic, who claims he hasn't stepped foot into one of these high traffic sperm repositories, let alone isn't fully aware that an empty trashcan, only means theres been no tissues tossed in it.
My travels have seen me to many a seedy bookstore, not to discount an occasional peepbooth or two, but classy or otherwise, the rule of thumb I generally always observed,
is never stay long enough, to need to sit down.
