Rashida Jones and two other feminist do-gooders did a documentary on teen porn in Miami. They used Hussie Models (Riley) and documented 5 porn chicks - Ava Taylor, Stella May, Ava Kelly, Brooklyn Daniels, and Lucy Tyler as they started and did scenes in their first few months in the business.
Fascinating look into the Miami porn industry. Deals mostly with Stella as she interacts with her family and boyfriend and ultimately quits porn.
Some great Facial Abuse clips and soundbites, and some classic male porn dude snippets too.
Overall the movie is good times all around. But probably doesn't shine a very nice light for our industry. There is no easier industry to attack in this country than porno.

someone should make a movie about what a cesspool Hollywood is and shine a light on all the scumbags, creeps, perverts, and sociopaths who have high-salaried employment as agents, managers, studio heads, and directors. making a doc about porn and trying to "expose" it is nothing more than knocking down a well-worn strawman. there are so many bodies buried in the film and television industry that they have to employ 'security experts' to make sure word never gets out. what a joke. same old same old.

I thought this review from the New York Times was pretty right-on.
Review: ‘Hot Girls Wanted,’ About the Choices Actresses in Pornography Make
New York Times
By MIKE HALE MAY 27, 2015
“Hot Girls Wanted” is a documentary with a provocative subject and title but an uncertain tone that vacillates between weary outrage and motherly concern. Hanging out with young women — from 18 to their early 20s — who have chosen to work in pornography, the directors Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus and the writer Brittany Huckabee face a challenge: respecting the right of their subjects to make the choices they do while abhorring those decisions.
The resulting film, which played at Sundance this year and has its commercial premiere on Netflix on Friday, doesn’t really make a serious attempt to reconcile those viewpoints. It’s a reality-television-style slice of life, using unattributed statistics about online pornography viewership and Twitter screen shots for topicality and awkward scenes of one woman’s visits home for emotion. Its default mode is twangy sentimentality, cued by the plaintive songs on the soundtrack (one of them performed in part by the actress Rashida Jones, a producer of the film).
But the scenes of a group of teenage and 20-something women sharing a featureless suburban house in Florida, watched over by an apparently amiable, eerily blank young talent agent who is a combination of concierge and pimp, are authentic and effective — banal, sad, funny and weird. The camera lingers on bare floors dotted with open suitcases and spindly bedside tables holding jar candles and boxes of Walgreens feminine douches, trying to enforce a sense of anomie and innocence lost, but the filmmakers didn’t have to bother. The pathos is right on the surface, as the women stroke their tiny dogs and discuss money, independence and the absolute necessity of escaping their parents.
“Hot Girls Wanted” traces a narrative path from eager expectation to jaded cynicism — it’s the old Hollywood starlet story — as we learn that most of the women experience a compressed career of a few months in the “amateur” pornography field before being pushed aside by new arrivals. The scarier, even more callous side of the business appears in due course as the women sign on for niche videos to keep the checks coming in. It is, however, made clear that the work is still performance, distasteful and upsetting as it might be for the female performers.
There’s an interesting story about class and the American economy in “Hot Girls Wanted,” even if it’s not the story the filmmakers want to focus on: how the women who answer “must be 18” Craigslist ads say they prefer what they’re doing, at least at first, to the dead-end jobs available in their hometowns. As Rachel, an 18-year-old from Oswego, Ill., says in her Miami living room after a shoot: “Are you kidding me? I made $900 in five hours. I’m going to go home and make $8.25 an hour? No. No no no no.”

Some initial impressions:
*I liked the puppy.
*I liked Lucy Tyler and despite still not watching much porn these days, I am now seeking out some of her scenes. Surely not the intended effect.
*Like pretty much every porn documentary (and most documentaries period), for people who already know an above-average amount about the subject industry, you're not going to learn anything. The only value here is a lot of what amounts to candid BTS footage, but that's something.
*The filmmakers are very, um, judicious in the questions they choose to ask and not ask, to address and not address. The holes in the Stella May narrative are puzzling. Why not tell us why she was so desperate to leave home when the portrayal they give of that home life is so appealing? If her dad doesn't know about the porn, what did he think the cameras following her around were about? You know you're not getting the full story.
*Can't believe Christian didn't note the multiple suitcase shots.
*Note: The name of the flick is actually "Hot Girls Wanted" if you're searching for it on Netflix.

I think the deluge of bad reviews is actually a good sign. It wasn't too long ago that these kind of hitpieces would receive no criticism at all.

Looks like here's yet another biased "documentary" on porn that I'll be skipping.

Sex Workers Are Speaking Out About 'Hot Girls Wanted.'
'Much of the criticism has focused on the film's place in a tradition of sensationalising the lives of sex workers and porn performers. Many have also questioned why the media is speaking for them, rather than supporting sex workers to produce their own content. And finally there's been criticism over the way films so often frame sex workers as victims coerced into an industry they don't understand. Instead of obsessing over sex, critics have called for a focus on issues that aren't so easily sensationalised—such as workers' rights and salary protection. They also highlight the wider failure to ask larger questions about what porn says about culture, not just women.'

But it's so much more fun to rally 'round the flag of a false cause and shake our fists in feigned rage and our heads in duly contrived dismay...
All we need is a Sarah McLachlan song to accompany our misguidedly useless anger and woe, and we'll be set...

^ And if we blame porn and (by implication) the people in it, then we don't need to even think about what rights and protections they might deserve if they so choose to work in that field. It's frustrating that documentaries like this simply strengthen a false dichotomy. Workers' rights and systemic/industry problems get ignored. Everyone ends up on opposite poles that don't really exist or help anyone.

I just watched it and I think that it's just okay.
I didn't see it as a hit piece as it just showed the experiences of 4 amateur girls which obviously does not apply to all female adult performers. The doc provided some statistics such as in 2014 "(insert noun here) abuse" sites had over 60 million combined hits per month (more hits than nfl.com, nba.com, hotwire.com, cbs.com, fortune.com, disney.com & nbcnews.com) My first (and my last) time watching one of these scenes just out of curiosity was the one with Belle Knox (aka The Duke Porn Star). It was the least sexiest porn I've ever viewed in my life so seeing these stats kind of made me go..."hmmm?"
These girls are adults, they receive their payment and they make their own choices. With that being said I just personally don't get how so many of us get off of someone else's unwanted pain and humiliation.

^^ Indeed. In her book, Dines mentions the number of "views" the painful anal thread has here on ADT. But how many people actually post in that thread? It's usually the same three people. Many views are those three people plus the curious, plus who knows? Same with websites.
I guess I'll watch this doc tonight with a martini. I am curious as to how they cite their sources, at least. Where is the 60 million stat from, for example?

I don't know who or what their source is.
It had not occurred to me until now that a good amount of that figure could be just curious porn surfers (such as myself). Good point. Here's another one: websites don't operate for free and they don't stick around for long without a great number of supporters.

In her next book, "The Scat Epidemic," Dines will argue that the viral video status of 2 Girls, One Cup demonstrates a widespread popular demand for scat porn.

If they provided no source, that gives me reason to be suspicious. Like I said, I will watch the doc tonight. But yes, you yourself went to the site! During the Belle Knox circus, tons of people went to that site for a massive variety of reasons--curiosity, research, etc. And now people will be visiting the site thanks to this documentary.
Bleh. Edited to delete that racist FA tweet. We don't need it here. :)

The one scene that stuck out for me was the one where Ava was paired with the middle-aged dude, and she seemed completely disgusted by him. If he was able to complete that scene with her, my hat's off to him. If I were in a situation where I was supposed to have sex with a girl who was disgusted with my appearance, honestly I would not be able to get it up.

Just watched it. Was interesting at least. I didn't know pro-Am stuff was so popular. The Stella May story started off really well and then seemed a bit contrived. Earlier she said she was making 900 a scene and would never go back for 8 dollars an hour jobs and 3 months later she does just that because of her boyfriend who seemed like a hypocrite!

A Look Inside Amateur Porn: Hot Girls Wanted
"The viewers' motives in each case are, of course, supposed to be different. Porn viewers watch forced blowjobs because they get off on the idea of hurting women. The viewers of the documentary, on the other hand, get off on empathy.
[...]
"The most viscerally abusive scene in the film is not forced blowjobs or facial abuse, but the dramatic intervention climax. Sitting on her couch at home, Tressa's disapproving mother and her disapproving boyfriend gang up on her, demanding to know why she hasn't quit porn."

Somewhat OT, but wasn't Gail Dines also going to release an anti-porn propaganda film to go along with her book? I vaguely recall seeing a trailer for it last year. Was it never released?

^ Well, it's a scholarly release so it's a bit different from general release films such as HGW. It is intended for classroom instruction. We would need to see how many professors are using it in class to see how much of a splash it made. However, considering what happened to Jammie Price when she screened Dines's other film, The Price of Pleasure, I wonder if professors will be a bit more hesitant.

I just watched it yesterday and thought it was interesting. I don't know anything about pro-am porn so it was nice to see another genre of the porn biz because it's usually pornstars who get the attention in most docs. I thought it was an honest look at the girls featured and their situation. Many documentaries seem to be trying to force a point of view on to the viewer but this one seemed to just document what actually happened and go with it. It showed the pitfalls without making it seem like there were just horrible things that went on. I can understand why some might find it dull. It didn't really sensationalize anything and there wasn't much on set segments or nudity and it was more about the girl than the porn.
Watching this movie, it made me understand even moreso how/why youg girls turn to porn. Nice to see a different take instead of the usual abuse, stripper/hooker wanting to make more money, lost child running away from home type senerios we've seen many times before.
The most interesting part of the doc was the difference between pro-am and "regular" pornstars. It seems most "regular" pornstars agents take the girls in with the intent of a long career as possible. Pro-am seems to promote short careers. I guess in pro-am new girls are the big draw.
