Your best bet is to check the websites of the stars in which you happen to be interested. Many of them have a brief biography page where they write about their lives before and during porn; some, like Christy Canyon, have even written books about their careers. And many, admittedly, don't have much more on their sites than a list of statistics, like a Playboy Playmate Data Sheet. Still, the most likely source of information is the stars themselves--but don't bug them about it if they choose not to divulge anything; even porn stars have a right to their privacy.

Mary Carey studied ballet, became a stripper for financial reasons, and became a porn star in order to increase her fan base.
Tegan Presley also studied dance and gymnastics, became a stripper to support herself and her boyfriend, and then pursued porn when her exotic dancing career angered him (as revenge, I'm guessing?).
Sasha Grey took classes in film, dance, and acting at a junior college, saved up money waiting tables, and moved out to L.A. with the intent of sweeping us all off our feet.
Tera Patrick started out modeling at the age of 13, did a few softcore films (when of age, obviously), and then made the transition to hardcore films.
Briana Banks modeled as a teenager (amongst other odd jobs), and responded to an ad to do nude modeling, which led to hardcore porn.
Jenna Jameson started out as a Vegas showgirl, was encouraged by her boyfriend to become a stripper and did so, did some nude modeling, and started doing pornographic film in order to get back at her boyfriend for cheating on her.
And so the list goes on- I'm getting tired; I'm sure you can use Wikipedia just as easily as I can. It would seem to me that most gals have a past consisting of random odd jobs, some college or junior college, not-so-great boyfriends, and more often than not some involvement in modeling, dance, or acting.
