Why do some companies have light coming from one direction? That just seems self-defeating. Why are there always so many shadows? | Kevin Moore Member Subdivided & Synthetic 320 Posts 4/00 | Posted - Apr 9 2015 : 5:56PM When it comes to the cameras used, many focus on resolution (1080p, 4K etc) but what really makes a camera move from consumer/prosumer to professional is the size of the sensor and the dynamic range of that sensor. Take the human eye for example. If you are looking at someone who is standing in front of a bright window, the human eye has amazing dynamic range. It will expose the person in front of you to see them clearly, as well as allowing you to see everything outside the window. Most cameras can not do that. The majority of cameras have a low dynamic range. You can expose the subject, but the window will blow out. If instead you expose the for the background, then your subject will be a silhouette. The obvious choice then would be to get cameras with an excellent dynamic range, however those cameras are limiting. First, they are extremely expensive. Second, they are not meant for the type of handheld shooting needed to capture all that is happening during a sex scene. They tend to be large heavy cameras, not designed for low angles. These types of cameras are often what are used in mainstream movies. They are big, heavy and require more in the post production workflow. Your next option is to then use lighting to offset the limitations of your dynamic range. However, lighting first requires a skill set. Understanding the various types of light, how light falls and also has a similar problem as those amazing cameras mentioned above; price. Good lighting is expensive. Lights also require some sort of truck/cargo van to get to the location. The best method I have found is a middle of the road approach. Natural light, mixed with pro lights and DSLR cameras. While I agree lighting has a been pour in the past, today's adult movies have come a long way. Companies like Dorcel, HardX, Xart, Brazzers, Babes, PassionHD and EA directors like Jonni Darkko all have good to excellent lighting. Edited by - kevin moore on 4/9/2015 5:58:14 PM [Link] |

There's a specific director at Evil Angel (I won't mention this person by name) who aggravates the shit out me because this person uses some of the hottest girls currently in the biz but I can't fully enjoy these scenes because of crappy lighting and horrible camera angles.
