How much difference can video lighting make in terms of skin tone? Sometimes it's obvious that a girl has been tanning, other times I wonder if it's just the lighting?
This is a massive problem with porn. And a very complicated one. It isn't just a matter of lighting, the camera used and the white balance. When the finished product finally gets to you, what you see is still going to depend on what you're watching it on and what your settings are. It happens all the time and personally, I like it. If the lighting is good it will smooth out flaws which means I can focus on having fun and shooting a great scene instead of worrying about any flaws.
All the difference in the world. Indoor shoots are a real problem because you have to get enough light, plus you have to get enough of the spectrum of light if you want the skin to glow. If you don't know, or care, what you're doing then skin looks flat and off-color, or washed out.
Would you believe your flaws look better under good lighting? Example - I love stretch marks (on the thighs especially). The way they look on video can change drastically with the quality and color of the lighting. I like to be able to see the veins under the skin. Another detail that doesn't come across too well with bad lighting. I love really pale skin. Bad lighting really kills that.
^^like I said, when the lighting is good the flaws are less noticable. Most guys do not like to see flaws or accept the fact that porn stars have flaws just like the rest of the world so I believe you would be an anomaly when it comes to actually wanting to see things like veins and stretch marks and that is cool but realize most of the general population isn't as accepting of flaws on their porn stars
Oh. For some reason, I thought you meant bad lighting smooths out the flaws. Like for example, I have read several times that porn producers will sometimes use gold colored reflectors or films in the lighting system to compensate for women who don't have tans (I guess). Unfortunately, once that's done, if you happen to like seeing natural skin tones (whatever they are) it's very hard to figure out what they're supposed to look like without gold colored lighting. I think the lighting should be as neutral as possible as far as the color goes. This seems to have improved a lot recently. I don't know the technical reasons why but I'd guess there's someone here who could explain it a bit.
Yeah I'd like to see insiders comments on this topic. I find it hard to believe many directors pay attention to such details as lighting, considering that so little attention is paid to other technical basics such as shot composition and framing and camera angles and such. Or maybe I'm just watching the wrong porn.

Obviously to me, they do not care very much about what the DVD or BR disc looks like on the customer's TV set. Every other type of DVD or BR discs, every other type of internet content and every cable program amd commercial get the colors right, but not the porn industry. Not just disc to disc, but often scene to scene, one must pick one of the perfomers on screen and adjust the colors to best suit that one performer while the other performer is either too red or yellow, to dark or light or dull or bright. Sometimes, the only thing one can do is mute all of the colors.
