Dr. Victor Kline of the University of Utah described several stages observed in the addiction process. Kline noted that pornography can be proven to be psychologically addictive with the subject craving harder and harder forms in order to gratify the obsession.
* The first stage usually involves the "soft-core" magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse.
* A second stage involves the addiction becoming more severe with the subject craving harder and more "bizarre" material.
* Third, a stage of addiction to "weird" porn evolves in which the addict views pictures of children, sexual acts involving animals and violent sex.
* A fourth stage of acting out the fantasies, including the extreme forms violent behavior, is the final result of the addiction.
If this is the case, then where are some of these more extreme porn videos leading their viewers?
There are so many things wrong with the op-ed one hardly knows where to start. However, the obvious point is in what's not said - to whit, that large numbers of people consume pornography and do not commit heinous crimes as a result. Ergo, pornography is not the direct cause Mr. Rogers implies.
Since Rogers appears to be an admirer of Dolf Zillman, it's interesting that he didn't bring up this piece.
Finally, I wouldn't believe a word that came out of Ted Bundy's mouth. That the author cites known manipulators like Bundy to bolster his thesis suggests a certain bias towards the subject matter.
So this leads to pedophilia, bestiality, and "violent" sex? I seem to be stuck in stage two.
Actually, no valid study has found any real links or even addiction. Since I, and it seems several other posters here, have access to what the media would characterize as an "arsenal", any truth in this would be readily and loudly apparent.

I find it convienant that this comes from the University of Utah, a state where you can find porn about as easily as you can find snow in Florida.
Well you are gone, so this may be irrelevant. But that website has no credible research.
This is an "if" along with "What if War of the Worlds (the original radio show) was real and the rest were a cover-up?" What if up were down and down was left? What if the universe worked on a strictly non-Euclidian basis? Would be be able to lower traffic fatalities?
There are no sensible answers because the base point has no base in reality. Many if not most pretty much stay at stage one. Stage two isn't even real - I don't know how many (even here) actually crave anything.
The rest mixes behavior they dissapprove of - watching any porn, with what is truely a mental abberation.
So I would say that the more extreme videos, as you characterize them, lead to world peace, more sensible population growth, and a cleaner environment.
>Maybe if a fella stayed in the first stage ( Playboy and Penthouse ) he'd >only have thoughts of beating others up once in awhile :-) LOL > >If Dr. Cline were an associate of mine I'd keep a close eye on him!
That doesn't follow. Just because porn does not directly cause most consumers to commit heinous crimes does not rule out pornography as a direct cause of heinous crimes as Kline suggests.
Of course, the idea that porn causes heinous crimes has a long uphill battle. This is obvious and goes beyond the usual tired "correlation is not causation" mantra and into the realm of common sense: violent sex perverts will naturally be drawn to porn, but this in no way suggests that porn consumers will be drawn to violence.
Sorta like guns. Sure, violent people will tend to reach for the most effective tool when they act out, but that hardly means gun ownership contributes to violence, per se.
Uh, yes it does - QED. What you are suggesting is that some people have a predisposition for violence which porn acts as a trigger upon. That would be indirect causality. The problem there, of course, is that you have no way of knowing if porn is the trigger or simply a trigger.

According to the website, this study was made in 1990. Long before the explosion of the internet. I'd be interested if the poster could find anything more current than a 16 year old document.
Some survey concluded that watching porn is also related to mental health. My theory is simple, in case you feel like shit, you use various kicks to feel better, alcohol, drugs, parachuting, porn, hookers etc. It's a substitute for medication.
I'm definitely on stage 3, but in order to reach the 4th, I must first get rid of my empathy.
I have to admit that porn is an addiction for most ppl. U just have to know how to control yourself.

I think going to church 3-4 times each week causes the same thing.
Damn, I must only be in stage #2 ~ because I sure as fuck haven't EVER had visions (nor would I want to) of kiddie porn, beastiality, or "violent" chokeouts.
Sounds like another right-wing religious nut or devout Mormon (not to insult all Mormons) that obviously thinks those who watch porn,...rape! BUT...of those who rape, how many actually watch porn? Hmmm...
BigBob: In reading some of the goofy-ass discussions, blog comments & dialogue that go over @ XXXchurch.com, and I agree with your hypothesis.
Do we have an unknown 'merauderer' in our presence? Or one to be even??
croy: I'm assuming it's not necessary to be into ALL of those fetishes. 'Weird porn', yes, but that could mean I'm a foot freak or into she-males, right?

Let's take this to it's logical conclusion. Just about 100% of all the child molesters, just about 100% of people in prisons, just about 100% of all criminals, all sociopaths, all degenerates, all deviants, all social misfits, all drug addicts, all prostitutes, all rapists, all murderers, and just about 100% of all mentally ill people... drank milk and ate bread when they were children.
So, let's ban milk drinking and bread eating since we know that's where the trouble begins.
No, stage three is clearly about violence, child porn, and bestiallity.
* Third, a stage of addiction to "weird" porn evolves in which the addict views pictures of children, sexual acts involving animals and violent sex.
Now foot fetishes are under stage 2: * A second stage involves the addiction becoming more severe with the subject craving harder and more "bizarre" material. Although I get the feeling having sex with the lights on or anything beyond missionary qualifies as bizarre.
Large numbers of people drive drunk and don't get in car crashes either. Let's legalize drunk driving.
You might have a point if the argument was that everyone who watches porn will commit heinous crimes. But it isn't.
I think it's obvious that the trend in porn viewing is from soft to hard to harder. A lot of porn is getting pretty violent. When you fuse that violence with the sexual imprinting that porn delivers to males you could end up with a problem. I know my own desires have tended to the "rougher" side in recent times. However, I must say it was usually at the behest of females, so there's the other side of the coin. A lot of women want a harder edge in their lovemaking these days it seems to me. Or maybe it was always true, I don't know. It's an interesting fine line there ...
Your argument is analogous to this: Let's not worry about teenagers smoking because just take it to its logical conclusion: Just about 100% of all lung cancer victims drank milk and ate bread when they were young. So, let's ban milk drinking and bread eating since we know that's where the trouble begins.

LoveAvenue: I have a short-fuse, have for years, far longer than I've ever been watching porn, some 10 years ago (maybe it was the time I stuck my mom's car keys in the electric socket?).
My short fuse got me in trouble at work. The trouble at work would make me want to murder someone a hell of alot more than any porn (even Donkey Punch) could ever influence that part of my brain. If anything, porn is a "release". That said, I have serious doubts my temperment is from watching smut flicks. To generalize that ALL porn effects ALL people who end up committing such henious crimes, I think is pure bullshit.
You're not blond, are you? It's quite obvious the sarcasm from budtugley flew right over your head

Being drunk is a prerequisite to drunk driving, yes? That means there's a direct link - get drunk + drive = drunk driving. Unless you're trying to claim that watching porn is a prerequisite to sex crimes then I fail to see any validity in your comparison. Are you trying to make that claim?
I think it's obvious that the trend in porn viewing is from soft to hard to harder.
Traditionally, youngsters were more likely to have access to Playboy than to "Cum Dumpsters." In other words, porn that was readily available was softer than the material that was less so. Thus the natural progression would be from soft to hard (this may no longer be true with the availability of porn on the Internet).
Also, people become more accepting of material that they would have originally ignored or disliked, because familiarity makes it less outré. This is true of any art form. It doesn't constitute a need for harder material, though.
Ergo, I don't think your observation has much significance.
A lot of porn is getting pretty violent.
Do you have any statistics to back this up, or are you merely noticing a change in the availability of content that's been there all along?
When you fuse that violence with the sexual imprinting that porn delivers to males you could end up with a problem.
Define 'sexual imprinting,' please. My definition of sexual imprinting has more to do with hormone balance in the womb.
Furthermore, "could" is not a word we like to see conclusions drawn from in scientific studies. All that word suggests is that more data is required.
-----------------
I have said repeatedly that porn makes a poor teaching aid for young people exploring sex, but that's not the issue at hand. We're talking about a claim that porn is addictive and that there's a link between pornography and murder.

Perverted Muraudering, hardware, perverted murauderers they are, I tell you!!!"Stuff that mouthpiece full of cock.....and shut me the fuck up!!" - Kelly Wells
He has a point Midtown, you act as if you think you do. Disturbing in itself.
Being drunk has the direct and proven effect of reducing cognitive ability, co-ordination, reaction time, recognition skills, etc. Whether or not an accident is caused, the ability to drive safely is diminished.
There has been no credible study that actually shows that porn does anything beyond getting somebody horny. There have been many studies trying to link porn to rape, etc.
As for what you notice about yourself, that is pretty much the limit of its validity. Yourself. If you think it affects your desires negatively do something radical: STOP WATCHING. You are an adult, you have responsibility for your own actions.
People sexually imprint on porn? Because most guys still don't want to pile on the same woman at once. Why is that the only part that they aren't imprinting?
Porn is becoming violent? Beyond the multiple guy thing, energetic anal, and spanking I don't think its true. But then I'm not troubled as you have admitted to being. I don't seek out the rough stuff. I notice only my own viewing (which is rare and greatly diminished from over a decade ago) and what is on the shelf.
Maybe so... Anyways, I've seen some of this stuff too... and I've tried quite a few drugs and I wouldn't mind being rich so I could spend my life jumping from cliffs and buying a million whores and a private amusementpark. I don't know if this means I'm a murdereous perv or if I just lack something that makes me seek more and stronger kicks than most people do. However, since I don't have a complete lack of empathy and respect for living things I try not to fuck children or hens...
Eric381 wrote: To generalize that ALL porn effects ALL people who end up committing such henious crimes, I think is pure bullshit. ---------------
It certainly is bullshit. But no one is making that generalization. So why are some of you here arguing so vehmently against an argument that isn't on the table?
-------- You're not blond, are you? It's quite obvious the sarcasm from budtugley flew right over your head ----------
I don't think I misunderstood. I thought he was ridiculing the "porn could be harmful" argument by sarcastically comparing it to a "milk could be harmful" argument. Wasn't that your take?
I think it's naive to think that porn has no affect on people. I know that for me personally, I'm turned on by things that would have creeped me out 10 years ago. Then again, I'm also still turned on by the softer stuff too. But I don't think that the kind of porn a person jerks off to is merely a reflection of his sexual desires. I think it can also influence his sexual desires.
It doesn't seem so far-fetched to me that a person who watches Max Hardcore videos might develop a taste for the young girl fantasy. After awhile, maybe watching fictional depictions of preteen girls being raped is no longer enough, and so he then seeks out genuine kiddy porn. Then maybe after watching a lot of KP, he is tempted to act out his fantasies.
But just because porn can be a negative inluence, that doesn't mean it should be censored. I think Ann Coulter and Michael Moore are negative influences in our culture, but they still have the right to free speech.
If a person wasn't turned on by the themes Max Hardcore uses (his skill and taste in execution being another matter), I don't think sitting through a bunch of it will make him develop a taste for the young girl fantasy. Probably will have a thing for clown make-up though.
While BigMike has developed a taste for Max Hardcore, I have become much less tolerant of his antics. The point being, again, that exposure to porn, no matter for what length of time, does not produce a predictable reaction. Porn produces as wide a variety of reactions as any other form of entertainment does.
Trying to make a case for porn causing any specific reaction is thus a political, not a scientific, endeavor.
I've often wondered if having a strict religious upbringing ironically increases the likelihood that a person becomes a pervert. As a boy, I was told that masturbation and sex before marriage is wrong. Nonetheless, I still masturbated and had sex as a teen, but when I did, I always felt guilty about it. Now, in Pavlovian fashion, my mind associates sexual pleasure with immoral behavior and guilt. And so the kinkier and more taboo the sex is (within limits), the more I get off on it.
Porn (and sex in general) is a lot like food. If these people wanted to do some good, they should try to promote healthier porn. People are always going to wank it. Their solution basically seems to be "stop jerking off and start coming to church on Sunday." It's like telling a morbidly obese person to just stop eating food altogether, and hit the gym.

I've watched porn for over a decade, and my viewing habits have never changed.
I like to watch hot, busty women have sex. I was wanking to Celeste 10 years ago, Briana Banks 5 years ago, Sara Stone yesterday, and I will be wanking to a hot busty woman 5 years from now (if i'm still alive!).
I don't have murderous impulses. Unless I get cut off during rush hour traffic on the way home from work.
Well it is generally shown that Loraine's avatar's consistantly result in wood.

Unfortunately, that's part of controlling one's self and will power as far as I'm concerned. This method by law of "facilitation" is pure bullshit, using/making examples of producers like Maxx to enhance their point.
It's about as valid as the argument that today's society is violent because of rap videos depicting some stooge waving "his gat, yo" and "poppin' a cap in yo' ass" around like it's a soup spoon. They go hand in hand...and all relate to self responsibility & control over your own actions. No one forced you to pull the trigger, rape some girl (or sickeningly worse, a child).
I wouldn't go so far as to say that "porn doesn't affect people at all". Rather, it doesn't affect MOST people the negative way it's so often portrayed by those most against the industry. An opinion...yes,...not a fact with any form of reference.
I think Michael Moore just has the balls that most of his critics can't stomach. Then again, those are the people who get offended when you say "Jesus Christ" or swear in public.
I agree with 10000 days, I get more bent in road rage than I ever could/would/should from porn. Porn, at least to this perv, is a relaxation tool. As Crissy Cums might proclaim, best to ease any pressure on the prostrate so that one doesn't commit an act they'll later regret.
As for this...hmm, could be. I had religion semi-crammed into my childhood up until about 16. My parents, however, both came from prior divorces but insisted we attended church on Sunday, or...(drumroll)...go to Catholic School. I got a job around 16 that required work on weekends, so church was out, aside the fact it was uttering fucking boring.
