I'm not wanting any technical info, so I thought I'd put this thread here. Anyway, I was wondering if the rest of you find as many faulty porn DVDs as I do? I mean, I practically find at least one duff DVD every time I order! The main fault I find is the picture freezing and sometimes digitizing although the disk is still spinning, and this is even on the full price stuff from companies like Devil's Films! Another thing I find a lot, is that the DVD producers have a nasty tendency to put the disks in the cases lose, which results in the disks getting scratched to buggery. To put it lightly, I'm fucked off with complaining about crap disks and having to send for replacements, especially when I find that the replacements suffer from the same fault! But I was wondering, do the rest of you find as much shoddiness as I do, or am I just unlucky?

When I first came to ADT, I asked the community at large to help me compile a best 10 DVD titles from the last 10 years so I could get up-to-speed on what had transpired since I stopped renting porn movies. Without exception every single disc from this list had problems with encoding, navigation and/or replication -- digital garbage on the screen, dead-end navigation, discs that would stutter or die on playback, etc.

I experienced the same kind of problem, but I noticed I could play the dvds on my pc or on my old dvd player without any problem!Maybe brand new dvd players are too sharp and the image start to freeze even for tiny little scratches, strange!(?)

I too have noticed that my old banger of a DVD player can play at least some of the disks that my new one can't. The same goes for the PC. I've heard that Pioneers like my new player are touchy with pirates, so maybe they're the same with cheap disks as well.

Although, that doesn't mean that incompatability is the cause for all running failures, because some, like my new copy of Gangland Cream Pie 2 finds it hard going at the start of scene 3 on my new player and flatly refuses to work at the very same position on my old banger! (???)

Neither my old cheap player, nor my Pioneer recorder have ever had any playback troubles with any disc that wasn't badly scratched.

Some studios forget to put timecodes on the occasional DVD. Bloody stupid. (Adam & Eve)

Some deliberately prevent you from skipping the FBI warning and their annoying company logo at the start of the disc. (Devil's Film)

Some titles have been authored by some amateur outfit that shifted the colour signal a few pixels. (PXP, ZT, RLD, Evolution, Metro, Elegant Angel, Wicked, ...?)

i have expereienced the same problems repeatedly which have made me reluctant to buy from studios that produce poor quality stuff. at first i was told it was my player. i have a near top of the range sony player which has no problem with mainstream discs even those that have been marked but for some reason the adult dvds don't play that well. i also have a cheap player "budget" that seems to plays all discs.
i think it is a case of the expensive players being fine tuned with precise lasers that they pick up defects.

all i ask that that studios get their act together and spend some money on putting out quality discs that play and last.

I have the same problem with Gangland Cream Pie 2, it won't play scene 3 on my standalone, but at least it plays on my computer.

I think you nailed it right on the head there! In a lot of the cases the more advanced the player, the more it scans the disk to the smallest detail, which results in the playback falling down when the scanner finds a fault that the cheap scanner is too weak to pick up.
You and I both, along with many other punters I'd suspect. I just plead for the porn companies, please, please , put some proper effort into producing your actual disks!!!!!!
Now that has me totally stumped! Why is it, I wonder, that the disk plays a-okay on a PC, but not on a stand alone???? There's certainly some serious compatibility issues with the disks porn companies turn out.

And considering that your fault's the same as my copy, do you think all of them are the same? Say, where did you buy your copy? I bought mine from FiveStar. If you bought yours from them, maybe it's just simply a case of a faulty batch?

Well I'm afraid I have a disc rot problem with Buttman's Toy Stories. It won't play the extras anymore, not on my stand-alone DVD players (I tried 2 DVD players, the PS2 and the Xbox) and it also won't play on my computer anymore.

That's odd, 'cause I've never suffered from that before. I've heard about it, but never came across it. How does it come about?

This must be some new definition of "advanced" that I have not heard before.

Sounds more like shitty engineering to me. If there is enough information on the disc that a basic player can read it, then there is no excuse for a "quality" player to fail on it.

Maybe it's another agenda happening here: My brother has a disc of "The Matrix", completely free of scratches. His Marantz player will read it o.k., but my Cheap Chinee will not recognise it as a DVD at all.

When I load it into my computer, I get a message that the software will not play it because it is copy protected. (HUH? It's an original disk!) So perhaps some of these faults can be attributed to dodgy copy protection schemes that have gone wrong? Maybe some of the cheap players just ignore that silly nonsense.

Back to your original question. Every porn DVD I have ever bought has worked perfectly on my stand alone player and on my computer. This has included disks from PXP, Evil Angel, Zero Tolerance, RLD, JM Productions, Wildlife, SG Video and others.

It does sound like you've been having a run of bad luck.

I've not had that trouble with porn, but DVDs from the local "super" rental place. I can hardly watch their flicks without it freezing up. I have phillips player surround sound, don't know if it is just a bad player or if the DVDs are just screwed up.

I've only had a problem with one new DVD, Service Animals 16.

I have never seen the Katsumi scene because it won't play. It just freezes up.

I thought it might be a scratch, but the disc is new, and cleaning it didn't help.

It won't FF or RW through the scene, either.

Luckily, that is the only time I had a problem.

Gangland Creampie 2 was a problem for just about everybody (see my comments about the disk). I don't think anybody got to see the whole Britney Madison scene. I would have thought that subsequent runs of the DVD would have had that corrected.

I have a question that I hope someone more technical minded than I may answer.....

I'm living in Europe. Whenever I attempt to play US-produced porn DVD's on my regular DVD player it comes off in black and white..

Whenever I play regular Blockbuster rentals (i.e. motion-pictures) there's no problem.

However, my computer (a Compaq labtop) doesn't have any problems playing the US-produced porn DVD's in full color.

Does this have to do with my regular DVD player (a Sony by the way) or with the quality of US-produced DVD's?

Thanks

Prometeus

How old is your TV? US Porn DVDs are in NTSC format. If your TV isn't able to support NTSC then you will see only a b/w picture. So you don't need a new DVD player, you need a new TV.

Another solution could be to change the output format of your DVD player, so that it always sends a PAL signal as an output regardless what format the DVD has. But that's only possible with a few players, the most players doesn't have this option.

Camaban..thanks for replying.

Sounds very reasonable what you're saying. My TV is..well...12 years old or something like that so that may be the problem.

The DVD player is no more than a year old and was quite expensive, so hopefully it's not the problem...

But it's strange, though, because I can even hook up my lap-top to the TV and see porn DVD's in color on the TV screen...

Camanban...

But then, maybe thats because my lap-top is sending out this pal-signal you're talking about...

I'm not sure what signal your laptop is sending out. But I'm rather sure that the problem you have is your TV. Look in the instruction book of your TV what formats are supported. I think it's only PAL and SECAM, not NTSC. If you have the possibility to connect your player to a newer TV, then test this.

I had the same problem with my father's TV (which is 15 years old) and it was because the TV only can PAL and SECAM, and the DVD player sends NTSC format to it. So I only had a b/w picture.

I've only had problems with three porn DVDs ever and I bought them from the same supplier. I suspect he was selling discs not up to spec... are you having the same problems?

The defective discs would only play in my desktop computer's DVD drive.

The disc may not be scratched but it may be warped or the center hole is off.

Maybe all of these problems have something to do with the anti-skate setting needing adjustment on your turntable?

But seriously, I've played probably several hundred discs on my standalone player, and I'd say my failure rate is less than 1%

I have had the occasional disc that was totally unplayable - No Cum Dodging Allowed #3 . I even got a replacement copy from Mike John, and even that copy wouldn't play (It does play on my PC's DVD drive, but I hate watching DVDs on my PC, but that's a topic for another thread).

Mostly I get parts of discs that are unplayable.

I also have experienced the same phenomenon of older discs getting "glitches" where certain scenes don't play as well or at all. It's frustrating, but I can live with it (Luckily, none of those scenes involved Brianna Blaze LOL)

That's because your TV can't handle the NTSC colour signal.
If you connect your DVD player to the TV with a full SCART cable, and set the DVD player to output RGB signals it should be fine.

RGB will make the picture from your PAL DVD's look a hell of a lot better too.

Hey picman , are you saying that if I play the disk some more on my stand alone it could correct itself and start working properly? Approx how many times do I need to do that do you reckon? I ask because it is a great disk and I wouldn't really want to return it unless the fault is uncorrectable. Also, do you think all copies are like it?

By "subsequent runs" he means "batches of the disc produced later because hopefully only the first 'run'(batch) of that title was fucked up so hopefully the next batch produced had that problem fixed".

Unfortunately, it seems your disc is fubared, and you'll need to get a replacement if you want to watch it on your tv.

cheers,

scipio

In the past 7 years I've owned two players, both were Sony's.
Sony may not have the sharpest picture, but I have only had three discs that I had not been able to play, two of them I rented from another store and they worked fine which meant it was just discs and not the player, the other one was a Hustler title, their most recent interracial flick with Arianna Jollee in it, can't remember the name though. I rented the same movie from two different stores and neither of them would play.
I have watched hundreds of discs in Sony's, they work great for porn.
But they only have a life of about 5 or 6 years, then they burn out.
For mainstream movies I am going to pick up something better, but I have found that you can't go wrong with Sony's for porn.

I had this problem, and I was able to fix it by changing the settings on my player.

Look through your setup menu, and see if there is a setting for "output format" or "output standard" or maybe "video standard".

If you find it, change the value from "AUTO" to "PAL".

I did this with my player, and now my American discs play in colour on my PAL TV.

That only works if your player has a NTSC to PAL converter integrated. My old player didn't have one he always sends the original format of the DVD to the output. My new Harman/Kardon has this possibility and converts to PAL50, not only PAL60. When your player has this possibility it will solve the b/w picture problem.

What makes me think that poor Arianna doesn't have much luck with the disks she's on?

Prometeus said his player is only 1 year old, so most likely he will have this feature.

Thanks for replying, guys (Camaban, Kperv, Licker) -

I'll give my DVD player a "wrestle" this weekend as soon as I'm at home again...

Sounds like it shouldn't be to complicated to solve...
