For background info, please understand I am a major domo home-theater enthusiast who has, among other things, ordered hundreds of mainstream titles through such superb online vendors as DVD Empire, the old 800.com, and others. In all that time, I have received but three errant shipments in which the discs had come loose from their keepcase retaining spindles. (Two of them were Star Trek: TOS volumes.)

And this is out of more than 450 DVDs in my library. I have purchased only four or five titles at brick-and-mortar stores.

As a rule, the mainstream studios release quality product.

My luck with adult titles, on the other hand, is way more hit-or-miss. And the principle offending studios appear to be Filmco (the Peeing Contest people) and Mother Productions/Fetish Films. In the past three or so weeks I have received seven or eight titles in which the discs were rattling around loose in their cases and were very scratched as a result.

Interestingly, all the discs loaded and played flawlessly in my three players (a Sony DVPS-9000ES, a Sony DVP-S550D, and a Toshiba SD-2800). However, I pay for scratch-free discs.

What I have done, in some cases, is keep the scratched discs, and have continued to order the same titles over again through Adult DVD Empire (the staff is unfailingly helpful, and has even extended credit to me for some discs I kept). And some of these titles I would reorder anyway--Mother Productions's Peeing series, I fear, may be not long for this John Ashcroft-empowered world. I could see these excellent videos becoming extinct under the present illegal junta occupying the White House.

But what's up with the quality control at these studios' replicating houses? Why can they not purchase better keepcases?

I have no choice but to order online. Even here in Los Angeles, the porn capitol of the world, it's hard to find such specialty titles in a b&m. Yet, I am getting tired of this hold-my-breath-and-hope-the-disc-arrives-safely routine.

Yesterday's experience is what has become an-all-too-common case in point. I received my latest DVD Empire order: one mainstream title (Blackhawk Down ) and two adult titles (Mother's newest peeing release, Squat & Squirt #3 , and Filmo's latest, Watch Me Tinkle ). Both adult discs arrived loose and were rattling in their cases. And both were scratched yet playable.

Thing is, the Watch Me Tinkle disc was itself intended as a replacement for an earlier copy of the same title which also had arrived loose and scratched (yet playable).

I have decided to ask my favorite contact at DVD Empire if she might be able to get in touch directly with the marketing people at Mother Productions and Filmco and advise them as to these quality-control issues.

This situation is simply unacceptable.

Meanwhile, I will return the second copy of Watch Me Tinkle and simply keep Squat & Squirt #3 and reorder it in the hopes of receiving a pristine copy.

But I am weary of holding my breath in apprehensive unease in much the same way I feel just prior to a Space Shuttle launch: I only breathe a sigh of relief when there's a happy ending.

Why can they not purchase better keepcases?

I've had some problems with titles I've recieved that came loose. I think DVDempire has some of the best service when it comes to returns, I've only had to return two unwatchable titles (Max Hardcore) for credit. I've also returned a few others, but not more than ten. There have been titles that I recieved for review that come to my door loose and scratched, so they don't get reviewed, no big deal.

I actually got a DVD that looks unplayable but it surprised me when I put it in my player and it worked.

I can agree with you about buying a new disc, it should come unscratched.

Now onto the point of this post...

I hate Private's old, or are they still using them, cases. Trying to get a DVD out of those cases wasn't hard, but also wasn't easy. I actually snapped two discs in half because of those cases. So anything but those cases I don't mind.

I, personally, have discovered the joy of binders. I now am in the process of putting my most watched DVDs in one binder, and my least watched in another binder. I still keep the cases, but I love the binder approach. Takes up less room, so I can buy more.

I bought recently Peeing 14 from Mother Productions in a store (based on your recommendation, THANK YOU, it is a great DVD) and did not have any problem with scratches.

Of course better cases would help, but I wonder if part of the problem is not rough treatment during the postal/mail process as cases are not really designed for shipping in mail bags (as opposed to the large boxes I assume the retail stores get them in). I think Mail Order stores should ship DVDs in special sleeves instead, propected by thick cardboard backing (the way Orgazmik do their shipping).

I order all my Adult DVD's by UPS and I get a TON of loose discs by the time it gets delivered to my door.
I order mostly from Adult DVD Explorer and Adult DVD Now.
I agree that the keepcases used by most companies need to be improved.
But I think alot of the blame should go to the companies (UPS, Fed Ex, USPS) shipping out the product because of poor handling.

True. But on the other hand, why have all but two or three of my mainstream DVDs (out of more than 450) arrived at my door still firmly affixed to their retaining spindles? I've looked at these keepcases from the adult studios, and they appear rather cheaply made. Some of the retaining mechanisms are simple strips to be depressed when removing the discs, whereas with mainstream studio product, they are full-blown spindles.

Purchasing these sorts of discs has been somewhat of a crapshoot for me. If any Los Angeles residents know of any brick-and-mortar establishments in town that stock these extreme niche-market titles I'm getting into, please advise.

Joey: Terribly pleased you enjoyed Peeing #14: Extreme Close-Ups --truly an excellent title (and not for the squeamish, eh?). If you can locate Filmco's Watch Me Tinkle , I'd love to read what you think. Because of how piss-poor (pun intended) the Peeing Contest vids are, I wasn't expecting much. But, whoa! Watch Me Tinkle is a knock-out! You will love it. (I've screened it four times in the past week.) Also check out the newest release from Mother: Squat & Squirt #3 .
