Hello All,
just dropping by to offer a rather off-hand observation I had this week. I sat in a dark room and immersed myself in David Lynch's "Inland Empire" a couple of days ago and all through the movie I kept thinking, "what does this remind me of?"
Yesterday it hit me, John Leslie's "Fresh Meat" [the first one].
"Inland" is over three hours long and it has an intense vibe around it, layers and layers of a glass onion. It is about "a woman in trouble" and it is very California, very dreamlike, and very weird. Of course the same could be said of "Fresh Meat".
If you are familiar with Leslie's camera work there are moments in "Inland" where you will instantly go "Hey! that looks like a Leslie shot!" Usually this involves the sunlight "flaring" around an actor.
Anyway, I figured this forum was as good a place as any to bring up the similarities.
Curious to hear if others have seen the Lynch film and their likes/dislikes of it.

John Leslie's "FRESH MEAT: A GHOST STORY" is a true unsung classic that goes far beyond the oeuvre of Rinse Dream ("CAFE FLESH", "PARTY DOLL-A-GO-GO") in blurring the unacknowledged boundary between hardcore pornography and experimental/underground cinema. It remains among my Top 10 Favourite Adult Titles EVER, and has influenced a broad range of mainstream filmmakers including Oliver Stone, David Lynch and Tony Scott.

Except that "Fresh Meat" struck me for how much it translated Lynch and Stone to porn. People -- me, at least -- have been noting the similarities for years. If you want some even more original sources, try going back to Maya Deren's "Meshes of an Afternoon" or early Kenneth Anger. Not to say there can't be a loop of influence, but I imagine everyone does what they do because that's what they like ... Still, Leslie's fugue-state features ("Fresh Meat ..." is the best, and maybe one of the best adult films ever made) are something else.

Funnily enough, I have Ms. Deren's "Divine Horsemen" in my Netflix queue right now. I also own the fantoma DVd release "The Films of Kenneth Anger: vol1" and am eagerly awaiting the second volume.
I really love "Rabbit's Moon" and can't help but wonder what Mr Leslie thinks of Anger's liberal use of 50's Doo-Wop music in the piece.
Ok, ok, if some think that this is getting too off the topic of Porn, well, just consider "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" as a sort of prototype to the "Screw My Wife, Please!" series.....

Ever seen Smoker? John Leslie starred in that and I'd say it was a possible influence on stuff like Fresh Meat.
