I have some basic questions how to keep porn private on a computer wifey uses. What about hidden or password protected files and folders? I don't want to have the naked lady pics show up in iPhoto - oh Lord no!!! And I do activate "Private Browsing" for porn sites and ADT in Safari - but it always logs me out and I can't use "active topics" (which I love) because it always shows the "last visited" time as the current time (thus no unread topics). Any solution? I guess I could just clear browser history instead... Any hints or tips? [Link] |

I've concluded I didn't want to be the person that explained to others how they could 'hide' information on their PCs, that in some situations might be evidence of criminal activity. I have no desire to make it more difficult for the police who are trying to catch and convict pedophiles and other sexual crimminals. Over the past ten years I've been asked for help (by detectives and psychologists) in cracking secret messages that allowed them to help victims. I've noticed recently (watching Cold Case Files and other crime reality shows) that the police are having to rely more and more on evidence obained from the PCs used by sexual crimmals. Being able to effectively hide that information will give the crimminal a significant advantage and I don't want to conribute to that. [Link] |

Now while some may have their moral or ethical objections to that, it's certainly not criminal. Also, it could be useful if you have adult material on your computer that you don't want your kids to see. So it could literally work the other way. A computer is kind of like a snapshot of a person's life. Someone who really knows what they're doing could learn a whole lot about a person by simply perusing their computer. It's not a crime to desire that your personal information remain that way. Many people would probably be shocked to know what their computers could reveal about them. And it doesn't even have to be criminal. Maybe it's just embarrassing. Maybe someone is a closeted gay and would kind of like to remain that way. Don't you think that person needs a way to protect their privacy? At any rate, it's not difficult to find information on how to use such software. You're not telling anyone anything they couldn't find in thousands of different places. [Link] |

| LubeNLuv Senior Member 1854 Posts 3/06 | Posted - Aug 5 2008 : 11:23AM RP had the right idea....the Mac is unique in that, unlike Windows, all programs and program data are kept in nice little containers. So you don't have to worry about "cleanup" so much. One of the big problems with Windows is that you can delete an application and still have remnants of that app and data (browsing history, etc) spread out all over the place. Not so with the Mac. So your safest bet is to buy a high-cap thumb drive or set up a secondary drive on the Mac (just partition off a space) and encrypt that whole drive. My personal preference is to do both...use a thumb drive and encrypt THAT image. With the thumb-drive approach all your application data and history are stored on that drive. NOTHING is left on the Mac itself. You can execute anything off that thumb drive as the Mac just treats it like a normal drive image. A 4G thumb drive these days will run you under $25 (Amazon has one for under $20). I'd also recommend you stick the Mac version of Opera on there. Not that I'm a huge Opera fan but it's a very small but full-featured web browser, giving you more room for "stuff" on the drive. Firefox and Safari are pretty bloated by comparison. Hiding photos from iPhoto is a bit more involved...let me know if you need help with that as well. In my family, wife and I share the Macbook Pro....I don't need to hide anything from her and it's kind of fun to see what she's been surfing (got some great gift ideas that way!!!). But we both still use the thumb-drive approach just to keep it secure. Our online banking all gets done using the same method, yet one more legitimate reason why average users would consider personal safety when using the net. Flip4Mac is great but I still find codec support lacking on the Mac. I highly recommend you grab the open-source program called VideoLAN/VLC. Lord help me if I forget to check Private Browsing someday and then forget to clear history. I don't think there is an automatic clear setting like FireFox. I know I could just download that. Otherwise USB should be a good option to store the naughty pics - which I barely care about anyhow. I could bury myself in naughty pics in about 3 second in any number of places online. I have not really explored the full potential of Mac yet - just interneting, email, pic (clean ones) organizations, ITunes, etc. It's far more computer than this guy needs... [Link] |
