OK, here's something I don't quite get... I think we can all agree that in the last 10 years or so porn has become much acceptable in society in general. I don't even think you could say the word porn on a sitcom on network TV back in the 90s or 80s, right? And now, it's ubiquitous.
For example, I was looking @ my cousin's year book when she graduated from high school a few years ago. They have these lists like "favorite movie of the year" "favorite song," etc. Something that surprised me was to find Jenna Jameson (this was from about 2002 or 03) as the TOP actress (more popular than Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock, Catherine Zeta-Jones, etc.)
So with porn becoming more accessible, how come nobody has come as close to having the mainstrem appeal of Jenna or Tera in the last few years?
My other question is, who do you think is the most recognizable starlette now & who do you think will be the "next big thing?"
I think Lisa Ann has done pretty well for herself with the Sarah Palin parodies & the Eminem video appearances.

Its obvious that Sasha Grey is the current it girl in porn. As I understand it she will have a very prominent role on Entourage this season.
A candidate that I believe could break the mainstream barrier is Tori Black I dont get why that doesn't happen.

Oh yeah! I'm not like a huge fan of Sasha Grey (She's OK, but there are other girls I like a lot better), but I agree 100%. Her career took off like crazy! She's done incredibly well for herself & she's still so young! I imagine in a few years even most non-porn fans will know who she is.

I personally think the whole crossover thing sucks, I didn't really like sasha grey anyway but her parading around like she's supposed to be a "mainstream" star is dumb, she's a pornstar, is, always has been, and always will be.

I don`t think Jenna Jameson was ever classified top actress unless it was in a porn list. You certainly can`t classify her with any of the other mainstream actresses you named because she didn`t do too many non-porn movies and the only one prior to 2002/03 was Private Parts. I've never been a big Jenna fan but I glady say that she is possibly the only porn actress that was able to parlay a small part in a mainstream movie into a multi-million porn career.
The only 2 other porn actresses that have had a small success in mainstream media are Tracy Lords and Ashlyn Gere. Ashlyn did mostly TV and she was quite good. I don't know if she wasn't able to get more mainstream work because she did come back to porn for a short while. Tracy has had a significantly better non-porn career with TV and mainstream movie appearances which she still does.
I think Sasha Grey is in a class all of her own. She certainly is the only porn actress with such a raunchy porn resumee to have done so much in the mainstream media. I'm sure talent and luck have something to do with it but I also think that the 3 other performers I mentioned helped pave the way for a less harsh treatment of porn actresses. Whether Sasha can make a real career in mainstream media is still debatable. I'll be happy if she does because it gives hope to the girls that there can be a way to make money after porn.
I can't name one girl that has a real chance at mainstream media except maybe in modeling but I don't necessarily consider that mainstream media since there are too many possible variations. I think Tori Black, Faye Reagan have the potential but I still think that porn and anything to do with it is still taboo for most Americans and that involves those that enjoy it in their private life.

If they do make her gape then you can be certain it won't be on screen but in their trailer.
I hope that that Sasha gets more recognition from her appearance on Entourage and that it helps her get more mainstream gigs. Anything that opens the door for porn performer is good for the industry and who knows. We may get more mainstream girls get into porn??? Unrealistic but still possible.

Marilyn Chambers actually starred in RABID (1977) with Cronenberg directing. That film went into pretty wide release, drive-ins and the like. Even gets ** 1/2 outa **** from one of the movie guides.
Sasha appears to be the only present day performer even close to achieving what Marilyn Chambers did with RABID. Her thing with Soderberg got a limited release and she doesn't seem to be resting on her laurels. Best of luck to her; in my book, she's light years ahead of Tera and Jena in terms of achieving some sort of mainstream success.

Gonzo has done a lot of harm to porn although it remains popular.

Don't get me wrong. Gonzo has been good for porn too but it took away the acting involved in most movies and thus has hampered mainstream exposure for some of the girls IMO.

I understand your point however I think its the total opposite. Gonzo and realitybased porn has made stars more confident in being in front of the camera being able to handle more expressions and imporov than how it was during the chessy features period.

Strange but I can't see where gonzo has helped a performer improve her acting ability except if you consider the ability to appear to enjoy getting gang banged by six guys. Not to take anything away from that particular talent but at least with any non gonzo scene. There is usually some dialogue that has to be learned and recited with a certain degree of talent. You can be the best C..sucker on the planet. This won't get you a steady paycheck acting in any mainstream project. At best you'll be a stripper, prostitute, or naked girl who gets eaten by the monster. None of these will involve talking since the producer have never seen you do that in any movies and worse. You've never had the chance since all you ever did was wear skimpy outfit for 5 minutes in the first shot and the rest of the time you were naked getting F..D all the while repeating these important words: Oh God..Oh God or Oh Fuck Oh Fuck.

The late great Marilyn Chambers set the standard. She was actually the Ivory Snow Baby while still an infant before she came of age and started making dirty movies. After she met horror master David Cronenberg her legendary status was all but assured. Then came Traci Lords. Before the scandal broke about her being underage, she was taking the adult world by storm and seemed to be the next big thing in porn. But well after the dust settled she actually started making a name for herself in Hollywood and even now her appearances in various film and television shows such as "Married With Children" and "Roseanne" are continually aired, way more so than any other porn babe that I'm aware.

^ Good call. I can't imagine many gonzo performers being given the chance to carry a film like Rabid.

Sasha Grey going mainstream? Give me a break. It seems like every 5-10 years some pornstar gets cast in a couple movies or TV series and everybody getging all excited about them crossing over. Let's see Marylin Chambers (Rabid), Traci Lords (John Waters movies, Blade), Ginger Lynn (Vice Academy, other made for cable crap), Ashlyn Gere (X-Files, Space Above And Beyond), Jenna Jameson (Private Parts, E! shows), and now Sasha Grey (Girlfriend Experience, Entourage). And what happened to almost all of them? Most of them disappeared
or eventually returned to porn. I'd rather watch them doing porn than see
them in some crappy movies and TV shows I wouldn't watch regardless.

Cronenberg gives a nod to porn in many of his movies and possibly influenced the selection of Chambers. His movie Crash is about the fetish of crash scene victims even corpses. Other examples are the scene in 'A History of Violence' where Maria Bello role plays as a cheerleader in full dress and the naked knife fight scene in 'Eastern Promises'.

^ I agree.
Also, most folks forget about Sonny Landham who I can only assume was doing porn and "mainstream" simultaneously (I may be wrong, but surely during the same timeframe), with substantial roles in Predator (as the Indian tracker) and Southern Comfort (as one of the Cajun hunters). He was in loads and loads of mainstream flicks throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Then he went on to be a politician (or try to be one) and basically ended up kinda psycho. That last part is opinion only.
Anyway, maybe Landham can be regarded as the most successful straddler of porn/mainstream?

I just saw Sasha Grey on Entourage and she didn't suck any dick, didn't take it up the ass, not even a facial? I was totally bored.

Were you expecting her to do that? What did you think of her performance? Was she credible?
