Does anyone have sales stats showing how good gonzo porn sells compared to mainstream porn? Talking about all hardcore porn dvd market what is the market share of gonzo? 20%? - 60%? Anybody with an idea?
Check out the Adultempire hot-100. Since they are by far the biggest retailer that gives a good impression. But mind that they refuse to sell the most extreme DVDs. Therefore the list is biased.
But I would say that in terms of sold DVDs, Gonzo can be called the real mainstream porn now.

Try to keep in mind that a lot of couples watch porn together and the cable deals for feature companies might even make individual sales figures irrelevant.
A better definition of the question is probably necessary. I'm guessing that "Gonzo" is being used to describe all non-feature movies?
Over the last few years or so, the term "Gonzo" really seems to have expanded to include not only the "Buttman", "Seymore Butts" type movies that have some level of a story line to now include what used to be referred to (and what I think still should be referred to) as "All Sex" or "Wall to Wall" titles, which contain disjointed sex scenes with no premise of a story.
Just to throw in a number: The article about Tera recently mentioned that one of her movies sold 40.000 times. And I guess this was considered as a success.
No, I don't think so. Nobody would call an Andrew Blake vignette DVD "Gonzo".
I think "Gonzo" is used by most people to describe raincoater stuff while "feature" or "mainstream" is used to describe softer porn. Most people don't care about genres. They only want to know the kind of sex presented.
Never ask a porn company about pieces sold. This industry is notorious for fudging the numbers as it were.
Plus when you take into account things like PPV and cable channels like Spice. It would not be hard to see how a "feature" type movie could out sell a gonzo one even if it sold less DVD's.
Gonzo to me is where the action is free... the producer isn't trying to make it look like something it's not. Whenever any filter is used it's no longer gonzo. Whenever some guy say 'roll' or 'cut' it's no longer gonzo but a featurette. Gonzo is about real sex on camera, then it's up to the director to capture it as close to reality as possible.
When it comes to sales, I've no idea, but II'd say mainstream is where the money is, but not where our respect is, like with everything else. Stupid people think mainstream is good - smart people understand mainstream is trash thrown at stupid people.
By sales; do you mean DVD and VHS sales or sales through cable TV or internet sales?
Overall I say that the gonzo porn is more popular in overall sales in all markets except of course cable where softer, more content is offer so not to offended anyone! I would think that gonzo is the majority of the internet online sales - period! It is short and it totally sex and nothing else!
Unfortunately, as far as I know, no definitive stats are available (publicly, that is), on adult films sales. I know that adultdvdempire.com ranks both companies and films based on gross sales, but raw numbers are not given. I heard AVN keeps excellent data on sales, but if they do, they hold on to it tightly.

Exactly! This is the way I used the therm Gonzo.
I am suprised most of you think gonzo porn sells better (I think of dvd and vhs sales, not cable tv). I basically asked this question after Steph (if I remember right) scolded me in another tread for allegedly supporting a small but loud minority asking for hardcore gonzo all the time. She claimed based on sales figures known to her, that this loud minority was actually irrelevant when talking about sold dvd/vhs items. Me, I simply dont know those sales figures...But from what I read now maybe I as gonzo-lover am not in such a small minority group after all...
I think it depends on if you look on the whole sales for one genre or for a single release.
You won't find many Gonzo DVDs which come near to the sales of Wicked's SPACE NUTS for example. The reason is that the Gonzo market is totally flooded with products of all kind. The sales for Gonzo are high while the sales for each single release are not that high.
Since you refer to the other thread. I think the main problem was that you gave some inappropiate comments on the topic and not that you personally prefer Gonzo.
I would agree with Juha and say that Gonzo is much more "themed" and more niche than features. Whereas the feature is selling the package including the cast line up the gonzo is selling the niche ie-blowjobs, asses, even pink-eye! I would think think there could not possibly be more than a couple of Gonzo films than out sell a regular feature. Besides non-hardcore fans feel less "dirty" buying or renting a feature over a gonzo film and hotels can also disguse a feature better than a movie called "Balls Deep"
I would say that apart from the the celeb tapes (Paris and Pamela) Vivid and Club Jenna probably have the big blockbusters. The so called Gonzo companies probably sell more though due them putting out more videos. I'm guessing though.

Lets not take single dvd sales, but overall sales. Market share is what counts!
------------ On a side note: Juha, I know that we disagreed a lot in that porn titles/boxcovers-thread. I still hold my believes. And Steph was rather on your side, I think. BUT I dont think she claimed Gonzo was only fringe market just because she thought my comments were inappropriate.
respect: In features performers seem to have less freedom, they can't say things that sounds corny or akward because it's a 'real' movie, everything is more scripted. Gonzo can show things that makes it believable, if we compare bts from feature and gonzo, it's obvious that gonzo is less about creating an illusion.
To me features are fantasies while gonzo is as much documentary as any other documentary, we can never be sure it's a 100% true, but it's easier to believe in than a big Hollywood production dealing with history.
well gonzo is definetely more popular amongs ADT'ers, just look at the number of posts in the porn pool, or posts about gonzo in relation the feature and plot porn forum. You also have to consider the amount of gonzo made in comparison to features made, especially since gonzo is a hell of a lot cheaper and less time consuming to make.
I am not sure if it counts in this discussion but Don't overlook the soft-porn industry. Movies from studios such as Seduction Cinema take in ALOT of money. Late night Cinemax, Peach, Playboy/Penthouse videos etc, I would be willing to bet Softporn does enormous amounts that rival even gonzo sales. I would agree however that Celebrity tapes are still number one.
